Award-winning for its meticulous reimagining and atmospheric melding of tradition with modernity, this 19th-century heritage structure shadowed by the Carpathian Mountains mesmerizes, enveloping guests in an alluringly spare, shadowy embrace made solid by regional stonework and richly patinaed timbers.

Named for its place “between meadows,” the pewter-hued, larch wood and hewn stone chalet transports via its spare, serene reincarnation that artfully bridges past and present. Respectful of the distinctive, Moravian Wallachia regional styling, the chalet’s bones—rich exposed timbers and heavy old stones—stand firm under sharp eaves. Interiors bring light to the structure, respectfully reimagined spaces such as the hall once connecting the home to the barn revived as a glass dining passage lit by a lunar orb (Moon, by Davide Groppi). Translucent whitewashing on centenary timbers brings luminosity to the bedrooms, and minimalist furnishings (sheepskins, simple wood stools and chairs, unadorned walls) bridge past and present.

Resurrected at the hands of traditional stonemasons and carpenters by direction of designer and innkeepers Daniela Hradilová and husband Peter Hradil, the 150-year-old refuge’s dialogue between past and present earned the Czech National Grand Prix for Architecture in 2022 (from the Czech Society of Architects) and has been published in the book Slow Escapes (Gestalten) as well as in Dwell, Forbes, Elle Decoration and Archello, among others.

Rising modestly from a grassland oasis within the Beskids Nature Reserve’s protected stands of beech and fir at the base of the Western Carpathian Mountains, this traditional chalet made new is aptly named “Between Meadows” for its serenely isolated location. The region’s second highest peak, Beskydy, rises from the home’s meadow, with Knehyne Mountain also soaring in the distance. The old log and stone refuge was restored to serve as an solitary annex to its award-wining designers’ boutique inn, Mezi Plutky, located nearby, and the chalet is walking distance to the inn, which offers a swimming pond and meal service.

Čeladná is a spa/outdoorsy community in the Czech Republic's Moravian-Silesian region, with a handful of holiday resorts (golf, including the PGA quality courses at Prosper, equestrian stations, spas) and abundant mountain activities in the Beskydy range. Sigmund Freud was a native son of the region, and his childhood home is an interactive museum in the town of Příbor . The Baroque and Renaissance town of Nový Jičín is built around a majestic town square and worth a visit, and the medieval tower in Štramberk offers breathtaking views of the Beskydy wilds, its dense forests and many peaks. The town is also known for its hike-in cave system where traces of Neanderthals dating from 40,000 BC were discovered. Hiking, mountain biking, and Nordic walking are favorite activities in warmer months, and skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding fill winter days. Hikers can summit Lysá Hora peak via a trail from the village of Ostravice, and skiers can grab first tracks at nearby Opalena ski station, one of a handful of small resorts serving the area, or alternatively, enjoy the ski areas at Pustevny or Bílá.
