North African Style Imbues This 19th-Century Mansion in Megalochori

Mansion Sophia, sister property to Mansion Kyani, lives in the village Megalochori, famous for its volcanic microclimate and prosperous, turn-of-the-century wine trade years. The village is still renowned for its viticulture.

North African Style Imbues This 19th-Century Mansion in Megalochori

Mansion Sophia belonged to one of the town’s wealthiest merchant families, and was named after her last owner, who carefully sustained the villa and all of the character of its 100-year heritage. The current owners also did meticulous restoration work but upgraded it to include a all of the creature comforts and a swimming pool.

We adore this color palette, with its electric pink flowers, whitewashed walls, and aqua pool. No wonder Mansion Sophia and Kyani have been featured in Conde Nast Traveller and Harper’s Bazaar. This villa in Santorini makes the perfect honeymoon backdrop, or a destination for guests who desire absolute privacy and a stylish and romantic environment.

With two bedrooms and one bathroom, this villa in Santorini can comfortably accommodate up to four guests. Each room overlooks the spacious courtyard with its Moroccan pool and garden, while the kitchen leads to a small garden with views of the village, colorful plants and a dining area.

From the courtyard, enter the double doors and into a spacious living and dining area with vaulted ceilings and original polished wooden floors. Splitting from the living room, are two opposite bedrooms with one bathroom to share between them. The kitchen has a beautiful stone arch, which now serves as a washing up and preparation area.

    THE QUIETER SIDE OF SANTORINI

The village of Megalochori shows you the quieter side of Santorini and is known for its car-free cobblestone streets, its Venetian bell towers and charming square filled with fantastic restaurants.

Megalochori’s past was ruled by the merchants and feudal landlords that exported the unique Vinsanto wine, famed in the region. The demand was strong with Odessa in Russia, and the remnants of this time are evident in the many Russian church bells, still tolling in the village today. The tradition with wine continues today – see if you can detect the notes of smoke and minerals from the volcanic soil.

Megalochori has also a dramatic, unspoiled caldera (a basin linked to the myth of Atlantis). There are no buildings here, and it’s perfect for hiking with magnificent vistas of the famous volcano and sunset.

Outside the village, some of Santorini’s best beaches are only minutes’ drive away, and 6 km away is the island’s capital of Fira, with its old port Ormos and celebrated nightlife culture.
