Archipelago Architectural Escape

Located steps from the water about an hour outside of Stockholm, this set of architectural cabins in the woods was created to be an effortless country escape. Offering city sophistication and sustainable design credentials, the retreats stand in a 400-hectare nature reserve, designer getaways created by one of Scandinavia’s foremost architects, Andreas Martin-Löf, with interiors by British designer Tobias Vernon of 8 Holland Street.

Escape to the Archipelago

A series of four modern cabins that's been celebrated in AD Germany and AD France, Elle Décor, designboom, and Wallpaper*, this woodland outpost is located within a 400-hectare nature reserve in the Stockholm archipelago. The cabins, located 20 to 40 meters apart on a wooded, waterfront lot, offer a minimal footprint that remains big on design. They can be booked individually or as a group for of up to 16 across the four buildings, each cabin with a single bedroom and shared bathroom.

The climate smart and digitally-outfitted concept, known as Landet Stay, was established by Umberto Garabello and Ted Wachtmeister in appreciation of low-key, cleanly designed, carefree Scandi living, with plans to expand the sustainable development from a single cabin to six architectural getaways.

This first cabin, created by renowned architect Andreas Martin-Löf and interior designer Tobias Vernon, is a holistic wood retreat slung low beneath towering pines perched at the level of the land’s lichen-topped boulders. Like an observation blind in the forest, the minimalist structure for up to four guests melds naturally into its woodsy waterfront surroundings. The boxy cabin is earthy, clad on the outside in rich oak panels, with interiors lined in deep woods, and furnished unfussily in neutral, organic tones. Floor-to-ceiling windows depart from traditional cabin styling, marking the structure as decidedly contemporary, and a wooden terrace extends into the meadow-like green surrounding the structure. Built to be easily disassembled if needed, the cabin stands on a plinth foundation that won’t mar the earth.

The cabin comes with an outdoor fireplace and sauna for added relaxation, and a menu of possible experiences—yoga, personal picnic boxes, meditation sessions and massage.

Around

On the dramatic Stockholm archipelago, some 50 minutes outside the city but worlds away in deep nature, the cabin sits near the town of Trosa, steps from the sea. The property comes with boats—paddleboards, kayaks or rowboats—for exploring the nearby islands, and other pastimes include forest bathing, hiking in the woods, mountain biking and wildlife watching for elk, deer, fox, hare and abundant birdlife. Foraging the woods right outside the door will turn up blueberries, mushrooms, roots and wild herbs in season to prepare in the thoughtfully designed, compact open kitchen. A firepit makes campfire hour a marshmallow roasters’ delight, and the sauna on the property was designed by Studio Ra, a young Stockholm-based architectural studio. Steps from the cabin's door is a swim dock to splash off of, or simply sit, sketch, read and dangle your feet from. On request, Landet Stay will assist with horseback riding, in-cabin massages and yoga sessions.
