AROUND

Once the ancient capital of Greece, Sicily’s south eastern port town of Siracusa is a significant archaeological and UNESCO destination with an ancient Greek amphitheater, the Orecchio di Dionisio Cave, Apollo’s Temple and the Teatro Romana ruins.

Its historic heart – the tiny island of Ortigia – is joined to the mainland by two bridges and is known for its  Baroque palaces and churches and its maze of narrow medieval lanes that converge on the lovely Piazza Duomo and cathedral.

There are a number of city beaches nearby with Ru Frati and its seafront bike path and park making an ideal destination for early morning or sunset ramblings. Further south, the pristine beaches and bays of Fontane Bianche, Cala Flies, Vendicari and the Pachino Marine Reserve offer some of the island’s best.

The UNESCO site of Pantalica and the  Cavagrande Cassibile reserve are perfect for day trekking, with deep canyons and natural lakes for swimming. Nearby Noto is also a historic UNESCO World Heritage site with stunning, wall to wall Baroque architecture and is one of the gems in the greater Val di Noto region along with its sister cities of Modica, Ragusa and Scicli, all reachable within an hour or so.

LOCATION

Siracusa, Italy. Nearest Airport: Catania Fontanarossa (65km)

BEST TIME TO VISIT: May through October is ideal but the region and the island are fascinating year round especially in off season when you can explore without the crowds.

This is a wonderful place to stay. Everything worked like clockwork from the moment we first contacted Luca to the end of our stay. The apartment is beautifully appointed, both stylish and comfortable. We stayed in January when it was quite cold outside but lovely and warm inside. The four sets of balcony doors means the apartment is flooded with light and the high ceilings makes it feel a very elegant space to be in. Best of all is the location, with the market literally on the doorstep, making shopping for meals a real pleasure. We only stayed for 4 nights but the fish man waved us goodbye as our taxi drove us away on the last morning, and the friendly staff in Fratelli Burgio (the most delicious deli cafe 1 minute away) shook our hands as we left. Pierpaoli gave us lots of information when we arrived, including telling us about San Fillipo church (which wasn’t in the guide books we had) but is an extraordinary place to visit. Apparently the tours of the underground levels are only in the summer months, but we were very lucky and a young man talking with the priest when we arrived said he was happy to show us around to practice his English! We didn’t want to hire a car and Ortigia and Siracusa are the perfect place to walk everywhere we wanted to go (or easily hop on a bus). Our taxi driver who picked us up from the airport recommended Midolo for the best arancini – we definitely agreed with that! If there was a 6 star rating Casa Sabir would get it from us!

This is not just an apartment… it’s an experience. Set in the Bohemian side of the island, just over the bridge From Syracuse. We were met my Lucas team, who were helpful, showed us around the apartment and gave us tips on the surrounding gems and eateries. The apartment nettles beautifully amongst the diverse daily life of the morning local produce market. Where you are welcomed into their world, whilst taking your coffee from one of the four balconies. A Birdseye view to peruse what you will choosing to cook in the well equipped kitchen. The apartment itself is so beautiful. Luca has renovated it to a such a high modern standard and yet showcased its history. It was a pleasure to come home to after a long day experiencing the delights and seeing the sights of the area. Staying here you are: 2 minutes walk away from the best coffee at the Apollo cafe, temple Apollo, taxi rank and hop on hop off bus €5 all day & designer shops. 15 minutes from the Jewish quarter, Duomo, palazzo Beneventano/del Senato & galleries, 25 mins from Castello Maniace. You really couldn’t be in a better position to explore. You must go to the Catacombs (stop 12 on the hop on hop off bus) Opposite the restaurant there is a lovely local restaurant.?The staff can not do enough to make your night and it’s called Kantunera. Also in the Jewish quarters there is Locanda del Collegio, which we had the most amazing meal and the staff again were so accommodating and helpful. This was a long weekend treat for my Mom. We couldn’t have asked for more. The apartment was perfect and made our time spent in Sicily. We can not wait to return. Thank you.

We spent a wonderful week in the historic, lively heart of Ortigia. It is right above a daily market. We could contact him 24/7 if necessary. We stayed in this apartment for the second time now and we will definitely go back!

Luca’s place is beautifully restored with both respect for its local history and the need for modern amenities. The bed is comfortable and match only the best hotels. The apartment is located at the local food market and makes you feel almost local. Having one of the towns best lunch places around the corner makes it a perk. We were concerned about the noise from the market but both slept fantastically. Syracusa at the sea is a great location to explore Sicily at its best.

We were lucky enough to be the very first guests staying here- and how lucky we were! After the car park (a five minute walk away), we were greeted by the owners, the lovely Luca and his wife, along with Pierpaulo who looks after the property when Luca is at home in Rome. Pierpaulo talked with a map of the local area. There’s so much to do in Syracuse that we could have stayed for all week!

The apartment itself is stunning, incredibly high end and very luxurious. It’s the nicest place we’ve ever stayed in! The master bedroom is just fantastic – light, bright and airy, with a beautiful high ceiling and a very stylish ensuite. The rest of the apartment is just as gorgeous – we wish to have one at home look like that!

The bustling market of Ortigia, which was an amazing experience. The market runs from 8am, I think every day from Sunday, and it was amazing to open the big shutters and windows and watch everything going on just below us! Sicilian feast (and drinking wine from Luca’s wine cellar!). Barely hear a thing. We were a bit worried about the noise.

The apartment was very well located for the rest of Ortigia. The island itself has so much to see and do and so many amazing bars and restaurants! We really enjoyed our time here, and would love to return one day.
