Dating back to the 18th century, this traditional Belgian oak-framed cottage has been stylishly restored and furnished by entrepreneurs and globetrotters Els and Peter, who live in the main house on the same estate.
Behind the facade (with its wooden beams, whitewashed walls, shuttered windows, and beautiful old doorways), there’s plenty of the unexpected. You’ll find an artistically-composed interior, cleverly integrated with modern conveniences.
On the ground floor, there’s an intimate and cozy sitting room with a huge fireplace and fully-equipped kitchen, private toilet and shower room. We love the cool pendant chair, the wonderful old fireplace stacked with logs for the fire, and the staircase that looks as if it’s been carved straight out of a tree. Tiny tiles in the kitchen blend seamlessly with the surrounding timbers, creating an inviting warmth. The dining room is a cool combination of stone floors and large picture windows, with the best furry seating we’ve come across in ages, and irreverent modern art.
The staircase leads up to the first-floor master bedroom, with en-suite bathroom and private toilet. On the second floor there are two double bedrooms with oak-beamed ceilings.
A great vacation home rental in Antwerp for lovers of both historical architecture and modern design.
Owners specify that the house is non-smoking, and that it not be used for parties or events.
The house is located 12.5km from Antwerp, Belgium’s second largest city that’s full of fashion, museums and top restaurants. Foodie alert — there are 12 Michelin-starred restaurants in the city, including The Jane, a repurposed old military-hospital chapel (book ahead!). The city was home to 16th-century baroque painter Pieter Paul Rubens, and his house (Rubenshuis) is a must-see, as is the striking Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal in the medieval city center
The house is also 4.5km from the Axel Vervoordt’s Kanaal Site, a really cool arts district and collection of gallery spaces along the waterfront between Schilde and Wijnegem.
