Celebrated Australian architect Kerry Hill’s award winning design of this holiday home elevates the senses with it’s bold but sensitive execution and serene sense of place. We love the abstract modernism with Asian overtones and the gorgeous setting.
Completed in 1997, this stunning holiday home in Margaret River Australia, was awarded an RAIA National Commendation in 1998, as “a house at peace with the landscape and the horizon”. The house and companion chalet inhabit a beautiful six acre sloping spot along the widest part of Southern Australia’s Margaret River close to it’s beaches with views above the Indian Ocean.
The design is one of abstract modernism and subtle Asian influences inspired by the architect’s extensive work in South East Asia and is reflected in the tone and lines of the home. Constructed of a series of pavilions, the single story structure is divided into two distinct wings. The steel and glass living room with floor to ceiling windows and a pitched skillion roof faces the north sun for spectacular all-round views. Elevated slightly above the ground, the space emphasizes a transparent lightness and is responsive to its locale and climate. The fully equipped kitchen and dining area lead directly from the living area extending out to the large wrap around deck with outdoor dining and awesome views.
The private bedroom wings are supported with unique rammed earth walls and linked by an interior courtyard and koi pond designed to provide sheltered and sunny outdoor sitting areas during winter months. The master bedroom has soaring twenty foot pitched ceilings, tallowood walls and Japanese sen doors that separate the master bath and is linked to an adjacent study. It includes a private courtyard with views of the river and over the ocean. The two additional bedrooms each have indoor outdoor access and the adjacent chalet has an additional bedroom for two with a fireplace and lovely countryside views.
One of the most influential architects in South East Asia over the past four decades, Perth-born Hill’s work throughout the region and around the world garnered him the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) Gold Medal for Architecture in 2006. His use of unique materials and exceptional detail have resulted in a uniquely influential house that has been studied and enjoyed by many.

The small coastal town of Margaret River is three hours south of Perth along western Australia’s southernmost coast. Widely known for its gorgeous beaches and surf breaks, the town center is lined with “foodie” cafes and restaurants, boutiques and art galleries with many surrounding craft breweries and wineries and a lively nightlife scene. The coastal waters are home to migratory whales from June to November and stretch between two lighthouses north and south of the town along the Cape to Cape Track between the gorgeous limestone caves and sea cliffs of nearby Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. The house is just a few miles from town and there is a path from the NW corner to the river for swimming or fishing with easy access to many cape to cape walking trails along the river and the closest beach.
