What we like about this property

Designed by native Sri Lankan architect Madhura Prematilleke, this award winning home blends the graceful beauty of Sri Lankan island style with modern simplicity and stylish comfort.

Description

An award winning architectural achievement, Villa Maggona is a hidden gem located in the Golden Triangle of Sri Lanka’s southern coast and off the beaten track in peaceful seclusion. Immersed in tropical gardens in blissful privacy, this home is in complete harmony with it’s environment with beautiful views of the Indian Ocean. The focus here is on generous hospitality and exceptional service derived from memories of family gatherings and traditional food and thoughtful but unobtrusive pampering.

Designed by architect Madhura Prematilleke whose Colombo based practice specializes in both residential and commercial environmental design, the villa won the 2010 Architect’s design award and combines both function and style with influences from his work in Asia, the Middle East, India and Finland. Constructed using local wood and stone, the horizontal silhouette aligns with the horizon with open air living spaces and views out to sea. Three of the four en suite bedrooms open out along the veranda that runs parallel to the swimming pool with a fourth en suite “garden room,” for a total occupancy of eight.

The large dining pavilion at the far left of the pool and the breakfast veranda offer intimate alfresco dining options with ‘elevenses’ by the pool, tea and cakes in the shade of the coconut trees in the afternoon and delicious bites for cocktail hour along with personalized menus with your preferences in mind. Food is prepared and served in an authentic home style with the belief that when cooked and served with joy and generosity, a meal becomes a blessing to both giver and receiver.

This is a delightful and authentic Sri Lankan experience with all of the modern comforts and unique character and traditions of the island.

Villa Maggona continues to uphold its excellent standards.  After three years away, our return here felt like a blessed homecoming.  The design of the villa blended the best of its natural environment into our living space, into the comforts of modern living: sea breeze, sound of ocean waves, a well-kept garden and a simple pool to cool down in.  And the food was simply amazing!  Best in Sri Lanka, made with such care and the freshest local ingredients, and completely able to cater to my children’s allergies.  Highly recommend, and will definitely return again.  Thank you, Jennifer and team!

Villa Maggona is like the hidden sanctuary of some Greek deity on beach holiday. It certainly cast a spell on me. The whole concept from ground-up has been meticulously crafted down to the positioning of the pool deck, ghosted over the location of the well of the original house (the process is documented in black and white photographs in the hall). I spent my time there floating on my back in the pool looking up at the undersides of coconut palms and picking through a hefty book of history in a hammock. The staff prepared a special Sri Lankan “Sunday lunch” for us even though it was a Thursday (they assured us it was a specialty, and the owner’s favourite), with Ceylon tea. The meals leave no inclination to venture outside the grounds. And when I finally did come back out to the ‘real world’ outside, it was similar to the sensation of leaving the sublime of some kind of poolside lucid dream, broken only by changes of light and the crashing of the waves without. I only wish I had stayed longer.

Staying at the Villa Magonna is an exceptional experience. We stayed in many beautiful and unique places in our 2-week trip to Sri Lanka, but the Villa was our family’s favorite, hands down. The pleasures of staying in an intimate, luxurious compound designed by the pre-eminent Sri Lankan architect, Madhura Prematilleke  (who won an award for its design) cannot be overstated. Every detail has been carefully considered to foster tranquility and an enjoyment of nature. Each of the villa’s airy light-filled rooms face a veranda that looks out onto a lush garden dotted with palm trees with a view of the sea just beyond. Though the sea was too rough for swimming, we loved walking along the beach and hearing the surf. The gorgeous lap pool that runs along the length of the entire house, parallel to the veranda, enhances the feeling of tranquility. Notably, despite the exquisite furnishings and design, there’s nothing precious about the Villa—it’s meant to be lived in and enjoyed. The manager, Jenny (who also happens to be the architect’s wife), is warm and welcoming, and the friendly staff she has hired add to the Villa’s charms. One of the staff even showed us how to play cricket and demonstrated how you climb a palm tree to knock down a coconut. We are a family of avid foodies, and the meals were another highlight of the Villa. Everything was astonishingly fresh and beautifully prepared.  Anything made from coconut came from the trees right on the property. We feasted on curries made from exotic produce we’d never encountered before, including jackfruit and the green, okra-like vegetable known as “drumstick.” Another standout curry was made from the day’s catch of crabs, prawns, and cuttlefish. Jenny also invited us into the kitchen to watch the food preparation, and we learned how to make the famous Sri Lankan individual bowl-shaped breads known as “hoppers” from the Villa’s wonderful cook, Chamala.
In short, staying at the Villa Maggona was an experience we’ll always remember. We will absolutely return.

Villa Maggona is part of a ‘Secret Sri Lanka’ whereby the exact location can be easily missed if you are travelling outside on the main road. The front entrance is appropriately unmarked with no signs. As you step into the Villa your heart rate immediately slows down and I was overwhelmed by a sense of real peace and calm. I found my mind emptying itself of all of its unnecessary contents. The constant sound of the waves in the background is a special treat and even though it was too dangerous to swim in the ocean, you will still want to just look at it for hours on end. The swimming pool is gorgeous just like in the photos and at night whilst floating about I saw the stars, palm trees swaying with the wind and a huge bat also flew across me! Staff are always on hand, they were all extremely helpful, friendly and professional in their manner. Food and drink was of a 5 Star standard and very delicious. I had a full body massage by a lady who was also very competent. Overall the Villa improved my quality of life for 2 days and made me feel very calm and relaxed to the point where it was a bit of a sad struggle to have to leave this place.

We have stayed at Villa Maggona 5 times. We just love it, whether it be during the summer or for Christmas. The staff are really nice and are very happy playing around with our children thereby giving us a chance for a good afternoon nap having had a wonderful lunch. I would recommend going on a diet before you get to the villa as you will certainly not los weight while you are there. The snacks, lunches, dinners and breakfasts are all fantastic. The pool is as good as it looks in the photos and you feel completely private. The beach is really nice for an evening walk and to see the sun set, but don’t try swimming. There are dangerous rip currents.

If you like a bottle of wine with dinner, then either buy in Colombo, or at a supermarket when passing one on your trav

We stayed here a couple of years ago and have been wanted to go back ever since. Everything from the moment of enquiry to the time you leave is dealt with professionally and efficiently and with a level of service you don’t find often. The villa itself is beautiful, clean, calm and the staff can’t do enough for you. The food deserves a mention for being absolutely and unfailingly delicious, my children talk about the ‘special’ pancakes all the time and I would have liked to bring the cook home with me. It is safe and secure and you can walk straight onto the beach to look for shells. We didn’t go out very much because we just wanted to stay in our beautiful cocoon!

Hoping to go back this year and can’t wait. A very easy 5 star rating from me and my children.

We had an amazing stay at Villa Maggona. We really loved the design of the house, the beautiful pool and garden and the views of the ocean in front. Jennifer and her staff spolied us with delicious food, attentive service and inavluble tips of sights and spoots to visit. It was an experience out of the ordinary and we could highly recommend a stay!
