What we like about this property

A sweet slice of vintage Americana with a subtle renovation and modern flourishes that harkens back to a simpler and less complicated lifestyle. We loved the vast, unspoiled farmland and especially the iconic red barn.

Description

Located in the prairie lands of Indiana just south of lake Michigan, this homestead has remained an authentic example of early American dwellings that were part of an enduring rural farm life. Thankfully, some like this Vintage Farmhouse remain and have been part of a renewed appreciation of country life.

Set among 60 acres of bucolic woodlands, this homey residence has extremely private unobstructed views from every angle in an idyllic setting. A saturated slate grey clapboard exterior and traditional early American construction house a residence that has been lightly updated and restored with whimsical and earthy handmade touches like painted light fixtures, warm wood plank flooring, traditional crown moulding and original knotty pine paneling.

Deliberately spare and minimal in embellishment, the interiors are warm and friendly and retain their vintage details. Bathed in natural light, the house preserves it’s rustic, old world charm along with an unexpected smattering of edgy, contemporary decor and modern luxuries. With three bedrooms and two baths, the master bedroom features a beautiful platform bed along with two additional guest bedrooms that sleep a total of seven. The fully equipped kitchen has been updated with modern appliances and finishes for convenience and utility that accommodates large family meals and gatherings.

The surrounding land is gentle and relaxing and ideal for wandering, lounging and exploring in complete pastoral solitude. A rare treat that affords privacy and natural beauty, this gently and thoughtfully renovated home reinvents the modern farm house, providing a tranquil retreat with a timeless quality that is soothing and inspiring.

It was a lovely serene place. I was impressed by the many charming details in the house and Leslie and Fred were outstanding hosts.

This marks our fourth summer visiting “our” farm in Valparaiso for a week. Fred and Leslie have created such a fantastic relaxed atmosphere, from the cozy home to the tree swing to the grassy walking trails lined with wild blackberries. It’s the type of place where you can hear traffic but not see it, where we can let our kids run wild in the yard which they rarely can do in Chicago, where you can wake up to deer in the side yard and make s’mores every night. And it’s a quick drive to downtown Valpo for dinners out and ice cream treats. The home itself is decorated with a modern-slash-retro-cabin curated style that could easily be featured in Apartment Therapy or design*sponge. Every year we enjoy coming back to see Leslie’s latest improvements and vintage finds.

I recently stayed at Vermillion Farms with a group of friends. We are all on different sleep schedules so I was concerned about the bedroom situation. This was not a problem here! There are several different options for sleeping here including an area in the lower level. I say lower level because it wasn’t a basement by any means. In fact, it was more like a suite? There was a full bathroom with a walk-in shower and an area complete with huge couch, TV and DVR. This house was tailored made for a group or large family. Plenty of room to socialize or find a secluded spot to decompress.

The house was absolutely charming. Very clean and beautifully decorated. We were able to cook without a hastle. Beds were comfortable. Our group enjoyed walking the farms and there was even a map with hiking trails – great for jogging too. The fire pit is amazing…a grotto really…beautiful stones nestled into a hill. We will definitely be back. Porch with nice views…close to downtown Valpo. Perfect get away.

ABSOLUTE PARADISE!!! This was not very far from where we live but felt a million miles away. The home was spotless and had more than everything we needed for cooking and entertaining the guests we invited. It was a real pleasure to stay at such a secluded, beautiful nature setting with the convenience of being just a few minutes from downtown Valparaiso. It was the best of both worlds having great restaurants, shopping and art nearby with the sanctuary to come home to at Vermillion Farms. We will be booking for fall for sure!

This place was perfection! It was truly SO close to shopping, great food and culture yet was so secluded you felt like you had the area around all yours for miles around. We are looking forward to going back in he fall if we can get an available couple nights. GO! Great get away!

My family and I stayed at Vintage Farmhouse for two nights recently and we loved it! We were looking for a last minute and easy trip from Chicago that would provide us with a change in scenery from our urban home and this property combines the best of both worlds. The 60 acre property gives you privacy and surrounds you with nature but yet the house has internet (which works well) and downtown Valpo is literally 5 minutes away so it’s easy to go out to dinner and do other activities.
We had a good time because the property and house were comfortable and inviting. The house was better than the photos –it was beautifully decorated and had everything we needed. We really liked the spacious layout and the wood feel throughout which made it cozy and comfortable.
Fred and Leslie were great hosts and they rightfully take pride in their property and making sure their guests are taken care of.
We would highly recommend the property and look forward to going there again when the weather is warmer.

We absolutely loved our time here! We rented the property so that we could visit family in the area for Thanksgiving. It was a comfortable stay for us and for my 83 yr old grandmother. The downstairs shower was perfect for her since it was a walk-in! We ended up having the whole family over at the farmhouse for Thanksgiving Dinner and it was fabulous! We highly recommend this property!

This is the ideal place to stay in the area. You are in the country, surrounded by nature but only five minutes from downtown Valpo. We loved the 60 acres of trails that meander throughout the property. And these are not some narrow trails that are hard to navigate. The trails are mostly groomed grass that weaves and winds through woods and prairie. We stayed 10 days and wished we could have stayed another ten. We had nightly visits by deer in the front yard. In the mornings we heard flocks of geese and ducks making their journey south. Fred and Leslie have bikes handy if you want to ride. Want to sit out by a fire? They have a small pit on the patio and a pile of wood handy. But if you want a big fire, try out the big fire pit a ways up the path. We enjoyed both.

The house itself is very homey. The rich original wood of the walls and cabinets in the kitchen and the wood floors throughout the house give it a rustic, but warm feel. A nice surprise was the vintage Zenith tube radio cabinet. The full sound was a nice reminder of how rich analog music can sound. We hosted four dinners during our stay and everyone was fascinated by that old Zenith. Entertaining was a breeze, too. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to cook and serve a multi course meal. They advertise this place as a two bedroom, but it can easily sleep eight. Morning coffee on the spacious front porch was a great way to start each day.

How about the owners? You can’t ask for a better couple to rent from. Leslie and Fred have put a lot of thought into how to provide a great experience. After you check in you never see them unless you need something. They give you your privacy but they are only a phone call away if you need something.

Our advice – make the reservation. You’re going to love staying here!
