Across the Golden Gate bridge tucked away in the trees, this vacation home rental in Sausalito is a brightly renovated hideaway at the top of the hill above the city.
Expansive but cozy, the interiors have a refined and relaxing sense of style, with a blend of contemporary and classic vintage design and a casual California ease.
The open-plan living areas feature lofty ceilings with walls of glass and a cozy sitting area in front of the fireplace and amazing views of the islands and across the bay. The dining area is adjacent to a fully equipped modern kitchen.
The spiral staircase connects to a mezzanine bedroom overlooking the great room and includes a cozy alcove and sitting area. The second bedroom has a separate entrance and each have treehouse style views.
There’s a rear-facing deck off of the upstairs bedrooms and a front facing deck off of the lower floor, with a fully-fenced back yard and multiple outdoor seating areas for lounging and relaxing.
AROUND
Set around the smaller Richardson Bay across the Golden Gate, San Francisco’s Marin County neighbor, Sausalito, is a charming world unto itself. Its harbor is lined with colorful houseboats with amazing views of the city and Angel Island from downtown. The waterfront is typically full of tourists in the warmer months along Bridgeway Blvd, with plenty of shops, restaurants and sightseeing to do.
Ten minutes north is the oldest city in Marin County, San Rafael with a lively and culturally diverse town and a vibrant arts and culinary scene.
Bordering the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the Marin region includes the quaint towns of Mill Valley, Point Reyes, Stinson Beach, Bolinas, Tomales, and Inverness. The neighboring Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary and Mt. Tamalpais State Park, are home to over one thousand acres of protected woodlands, wetlands and estuaries with migratory whales, shore birds, harbor seals and other wildlife.
The area around Point Reyes is also a foodie mecca with many homegrown organic products and a seasonal farmer’s markets on Saturday mornings as well as summer events.
There are literally hundreds of trails in West Marin with amazing views of the mountains, ocean, and rugged coastline, and expansive beach walks to explore including the Estero Trail, the Pierce Point Tule Elk preserve, Chimney Rock, Drakes Beach and the sand dunes at Abbott’s Lagoon.

All I can say is do yourself a favor and book this if it’s available. João is an exceptional person, and getting the chance to experience the lifestyle he has created here a rare treat. A read through the guest book echoes this sentiment. Thank you João!

Whatever you think the bar of ‘amazing’ is … get ready to revise your estimate. Joao’s place is stunning – easily the most beautiful property we have had the pleasure of visiting. Our month in Sausalito was absolutely perfect. From his genuine investment in our experience to the 100s of small touches that make his A-frame so beautiful, Joao is the consummate host and your only regret will be to have not stayed longer!

Joao’s house is an incredible spot. Trees swaying in the wind through windows on every wall and beautiful interiors – it feels like a perfect European pied-a-terre and should be featured in a home magazine. Highly recommend for anyone looking to live in their dream home for a while. In addition, Joao himself was the kindest, most thoughtful host we have ever had. He gave us cycling routes ahead of time, checked in throughout the stay to make sure we had everything we needed, and even hosted us for dinner in a nearby town (he’s also an incredible chef). My husband and I say this trip was worth it if only to meet Joao. No doubt we will continue to stay friends. Thank you for everything!

The trees and the view combined with the books and lovely sunlight make it an ideal place to be – like a little oasis. Love the French press coffee, too. An extraordinary stay. 5 stars all-around.

João was an amazing host. He really made us feel at home and welcome. The home is up in the hills of Sausalito was bright, stylish and cozy. And the views of the water are lovely. It was easy to connect with João and access the home. Everything was perfectly clean and the home is nicely decorated. It was easy to walk down to town and the ferry dock if you choose. And there is a small market at the bottom of the hill. It is a breeze to get into SF or explore Marin from this location. My family enjoyed getting to a a bunch of great adventures from here. It feels nicely removed yet has full access to town and city within minutes. The house has everything you need and nothing that you don’t. And João was the best host you could hope for. We really appreciate it. Obrigado João!

My colleague and I stayed for three epic days of strategy and exercises. It’s a perfect location for deep thinking (or on a different kind of trip, romance). Perfectly located and very well appointed, and Joao’s a tremendously thoughtful host.

My only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer. Joao was an incredible host, insisted we live as if the place was our own. The interior is so keenly decorated you’ll get lost in all the little details. That is, until you see sunrise for the first time and OMG photos do not do it justice. My only complaint is it’s convenient to get to downtown but you’ll never want to leave. Some random asides: – Recommend using the exterior staircase for currying luggage upstairs. The spiral can be a bit narrow for large bags. – Light switch for the (enchanting) balcony lights is on the floor. THE FLOOR! – Joao isn’t kidding when he says he has books. Recommend “Silence: In the Age of Noise”.

We were looking for a space for a retreat and found such a nurturing space. We loved it, unique and filled with magic. It did not disappoint in the least.

This is truly a special space. Everything about our 30 night stay at Joao’s exceeded our expectations. The location is fantastic with close proximity to both nature and the city. The cabin itself is exceptionally clean and very tastefully styled. Joao was an attentive and conscientious host from the moment we booked until the end of our stay. Our only regret is that we didn’t book for longer! Thanks Joao for an unforgettable first month living in the Bay!
