What we like about this property

The dramatic scale and sublime architectural lines of this award winning home are in striking contrast to the vast great lawn and jungle that surrounds it. A cool fusion of modern design principles and a faintly Mayan sensibility, we love the inspired creativity and simplicity here.

Description

First place winner of the coveted Cemex Award for both residential and international architectural excellence, this stunning home makes an immediate visual and emotional impact. Designed by Yucatan architect Salvador Reyes Rios, this home uses the latest technologies and techniques to achieve results that are both historically authentic and original in vision.

Located in the small village of Sac Chich in the most historic region of the Yucatan, the home is placed on over two acres of what were once ancient henequen drying fields for industrial production of sisal. Surrounded by the original ten foot masonry walls of a historic neighboring Hacienda that shares the property, the fields are now a massive lawn area lined with royal palms that create a large but very private world all your own.

Constructed using the ancient Mayan technique of chukum, the limestone and plaster are polished to a sleek finish that’s elegant and earthy. Entirely open through the middle of the structure, the central living area along with the oversized ceiling and door heights give every room a dramatic sense of space.

With a sunken living room, dining room and fully equipped kitchen, the house is ideal for entertaining and divides the private sleeping spaces to either side. With two bedrooms and two baths it comfortably accommodates up to six.

To one side of the house you’ll find a patio with a large lily pond and and to the other a beautiful three sided infinity swimming pool, palapa and patio for dining and lounging.

Designed to highlight the beauty of the Yucatan as well as a unique architectural experience, this is a memorable and luxurious home.

    OUTSTANDING PLACE!!!
After a 3 weeks travel in Mexico, Casa Sisal was the best retreat we could have had for our last three days in this beautiful country. Carefully designed house with outstanding comfort, amazing garden with fireflies, great pool and palms. Very friendly and welcoming hosts. It was great to see the amazing work Cyndy and Howie have done to have such a great place in a small village in Mexico! We loved the contrasts between the surroundings, the reconstructed hacienda and the new Casa Sisal. Would love to travel to Merida so we could stay in this amazing place again.

  • WE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT AND IT WAS AN ADVENTURES TRIP!
I would recommend everyone to experience Yucatan while staying at The Sisal Residence. We requested breakfast every morning which was delicious and chef we hired to cook for us dinner was outstanding too! Cynthia will give you everything you need to know even the places to visit.

    WHAT BLISS!
We had a truly unforgettable 30th wedding anniversary celebration at Sac Chich! Exquisite style and attention to detail make this beautiful home a luxurious destination. We look forward to returning again soon to relax at this lavish refuge and to explore more of the fascinating Yucatan.

  • I can only echo previous reviews when I say that the pictures don’t even begin to do this property justice. Both Casa Sisal and the Hacienda itself are jaw-dropping, and even after 5 days we kept noticing little details in the house that were just perfect – its architecture award is richly deserved. The gardens, lighting and setting are also magnificent – I honestly can’t think of a single thing that was not just wonderful.
Cyndy herself is interesting, funny, warm and a mine of information – she has also found the perfect balance between being a great host – and leaving you in complete privacy when you want it. The staff also deserve a special mention, in particular Javier, as they too manage to be helpful and efficient, without being remotely intrusive. Many hotels could take a leaf out of their book!
We loved the house, the pool, the area, the setting and miss the ‘disco lawn’ (worth being by the pool at sunset with a cool drink for that!) – I would return there in an instant, and can’t recommend it highly enough.

WORDS CAN NOT DESCRIBE THE LUXURY AND RELAXATION THAT IS AWAITING YOU AT HACIENDA SAC CHICH.
Words can not describe the luxury and relaxation that is awaiting you at Hacienda Sac Chich. I went on a girls trip to Merida and this home exceeded our expectations. The property and accommodations were exceptional. The home is beautiful and well maintained with secret treasures all over the property. After spending the day sipping margaritas by the pool we would move to the roof where we could watch the sunset or out onto the lush property to watch the fireflies flicker with breath-taking beauty. When we had our fill of relaxation we would go into town to get freshly made tortillas and authentic Mayan cuisine or we would take a day trip to see the Mayan ruins and swim in the underground water caves (cenotes)! The owners were beyond wonderful-super helpful and kind. I highly recommend this property-you will have an unforgettable experience!

CASA SISAL – EXCLUSIVE CONTEMPORARY COUNTRY HOME
    Magical
My family and I were overwhelmed by the beauty and perfection of the hacienda and casa sisal! The pictures are amazing and yet do no justice to just how perfect the place is. I rarely write reviews but we had a truly exceptional stay and appreciated each and every corner and detail.

HACIENDA SAC CHICH IS THE MOST AWE INSPIRING PLACE I HAVE BEEN TO
Exotic singing birds, lush plants, phenomenal food, refreshing pool, lounging areas and a great sound system; that can be linked to different areas of the house; star-gazing platform on the roof to watch the sunset and the stars; privacy. It is located perfectly for day trips to cenotes, ruins, the beach and the city, but feels like a complete escape from it all behind the limestone walls and under the royal palms. Spending time here was the trip of a lifetime. A real thinking place.

  • WE LOVED OUR STAY AT CASA SISAL!
Cyndy and Howie were very nice and helpful and the staff was kind and welcoming. Cyndy arranged for her staff to cook breakfast and dinner for us every day which was delicious and a lovely way to immerse ourselves in the local culture. They also laundered our clothes before we left which is a huge help when traveling with small children. Our three kids enjoyed splashing in the pool and loved the owner’s sweet dog Eva. We made two side trips–to a local ruin and to a fabulous nature reserve a few hours away where we saw literally thousands of flamingos. I highly recommend this beautiful home and hope to visit again some day.

WONDERFUL TIME AFTER A ROUNDTRIP THROUGH MEXICO
We stayed for 10 days at Casa Sisal at Hacienda Sac Chich in early September. We enjoyed the quietness, the feeling to be in nature there, the places nearby and to live in an outstanding design object. Cyndy and Howie as well as William and the staff made everything comfortable, so we could enjoy the hot days in the pool, the frog sound in the evenings and the light of fireflies when it gets dark. Merida is close, with a lot of fantastic possibilities for food. Uxmal and Chichen Itza are 1h away, Mayapan only 30 min. Enjoy the cenotes around … it is amazing to swim there. But the best is the feeling, when you come back to Casa Sisal after all these activities.

WE STAYED AT CASA SISAL FOR FOUR NIGHTS IN NOVEMBER.
This was part of a trip around the world we are on and came at the end of two wonderful weeks in Mexico. After several stays in fairly average hotels (travelling budget!), arriving at Casa Sisal was the most wonderful experience. The house is exactly as it appears in the photos and is part of a larger estate with the most beautiful gardens and renovated Hacienda. Our three girls were immediately in the pool shrieking with glee. We were welcomed shortly after our arrival by Howard who was warm, friendly and incredibly helpful. Having familiarised ourselves with the house, we started to think about cooking supper…just at this point the wonderful Bartola walked up the long, manicured garden bearing in her arms a welcome gift of freshly baked- still warm from the oven – plantain bread. We devoured it within minutes and soon forgot about cooking supper! The rest of our stay was equally as relaxing and enjoyable. We made several trips to the surrounding area. The highlights for us being the ruins at Mayapan – we were the only ones there which was an amazing experience after the crowds at Tulum ruins and Coba; Seeing flamingos for the first time and a crocodile at Celestun and arriving in the local village to buy provisions just in time to see a parade taking place with a fantastic and wildly out of tune band playing. Howard kindly gave us a guided tour around the rest of the estate which was fascinating. The staff are all super friendly and helpful. Everyone smiles and we were made to feel extremely welcome – even with three very loud daughters. The magic of Casa Sisal is to be discovered at dusk but I won’t spoil the surprise. We didn’t tell our children and what they witnessed will I’m sure stay with them for the rest of their lives. I can’t recommend this place enough. It was magical.

A group of girlfriends and I vacationed at this beautiful guest house for 5 days. We were all so impressed with the design of the house and grounds, the level of refinement and finish were incredible. The staff were all very kind, and William in particular helped us arrange a day trip to visit the best cenotes in the area. The location is great for days trips in the area, and also close/far enough from Merida to enjoy the downtown scene. Cyndy and her husband Howie were also incredibly welcoming and offered us a tour of their neighboring Hacienda. All together a perfect stay for groups or couples!

My family and I spent one week at Villa Yucatan this April. The house and the grounds are truly spectacular. The house is very comfortable – beds are comfortable, kitchen well equipped with a grill outside, and a wonderful pool. The communal kitchen / living area is a breezeway that you can open, leave screened, or shut with glass sliding doors. The staff at the house is wonderful.

The house is perfectly situated for day trips to surrounding ruins and towns. We definitely like the ruins, but our favorite thing to do was just drive through the small towns and see the churches and the bustling town markets, and to adventure into abandoned haciendas. We are also perfectly content just to lounge and relax at the house all day. We returned each day from our exploring to relax at the house, swim in the pool and hang out on the patio under the blooming plumeria. We would sit outside at night with a glass of wine and admire the fire fly show on the lawn and watch the stars come out.

We are not done exploring the area and will definitely be back. Staying at Villa Yucatan made the trip for us – to have such a fantastic place to return to at the end of each day and enjoy into the evening. By far one of the best places we have stayed.

We had a fabulous family time to celebrate Christmas and our daughter 7th birthday in the Hacienda. Truly beautiful home in very serene surroundings. Very friendly staff as well–Mexicans are truly welcoming. Since I am a chef (and we traveled as a family with small children), I was surprised not to find an oven or dishwasher at first in the house, but once we understood the cleaning system in place, everything fell into place. I was glad to practice my Spanish as well with our daily helpers, Bartola and Soco. Longing to go back. Thank you.

I can only echo previous reviews when I say that the pictures don’t even begin to do this property justice. Both Villa Yucatan and the Hacienda itself are jaw-dropping, and even after 5 days we kept noticing little details in the house that were just perfect – its architecture award is richly deserved.
We loved the house, the pool, the area, the setting and miss the ‘disco lawn’ (worth being by the pool at sunset with a cool drink for that!) – I would return there in an instant, and can’t recommend it highly enough

Hacienda La Fabrica is the most awe inspiring place I have been to – exotic singing birds; lush plants; phenomenal food; refreshing pool and lounging areas; great sound system that can be linked to different areas of the house; star-gazing platform on the roof to watch the sunset and the stars; privacy. It is located perfectly for day trips to cenotes, ruins, the beach and the city, but feels like a complete escape from it all behind the limestone walls and under the royal palms. Spending time here was the trip of a lifetime. A real thinking place. Stayed in Villa Yucatan for four nights with our three year old son for a short getaway in Yucatan. We found the house because of its proximity to Merida, numerous cenotes around and also Umxal. It is located in a real mayan village 20 mins away from Merida. Part of hacienda la fabrica, an old sisal estate back to the heyday when yucatan is the world center of ropes. The property is very special as a contemporary guest house built with a ultra modern style but also pays homage to mayan traditionl architecture such as using chukum for both interior and exterior finish. With fine taste and attention to details, the house is designed with a lot of intelleigence, aesthetics and integrity. It is extremely visually pleasing, very spacious and practical for tropical climate. The software in the house is upscale with most things one would need for short stay. There is no TV but a DVD. so if you travel with kids, you may want to bring some kds DVD. We don’t watch much TV, so no problem for us. Bottom line is we as architecture lovers, we enjoyed the house thoroughly.
Location wise, I think its a lot better than Merida centro. Its more authentic and rustic. The staffs are very friendly and are lovely local people, but they don’t speak much English, so the guest should be aware of this and find way to do the basically communication. But in a way, its part of the charm traveling there for us.
The only thing that we hope is better is the hot water. It is not very hot or consistent, but because its pretty warm there, it didn’t bother us much. Internet is a bit shaky but works fine for the most hours, just little things one has to deal with in a little village.
Cindy the owner is great in communicating even though she is not there but she is helpful.

My friend and I just returned from 4 amazing nights in Yucatan Villa.
We had spent a few days in Merida, and the trip to the country was a fantastic counterpart. As you enter the grounds, beautiful landscaping and nature surrounds you. At the center of it all is the contemporary designed house, which exceeded the already high expectations we had before we arrived!
The days were warm and relaxing and magical fireflies lit up the grounds as twilight began. Cyndy’ suggestions for daily outings were interesting, tasty, and offered many insights into the history and local culture of the region.
The caretakers, Bartola and her sister Soco were very warm and helpful and they cooked us an outstanding regional meal, which I highly recommend. We had a great time communicating with them using an iPhone language translation app!
We can’t wait to return with additional friends in the near future.

My (recently new) fiancé and I stayed for a week at Villa Yucatan after stumbling upon it online while planning our Mexican holiday from australia. We were both immensely blown away with our experience at Villa Yucatan. I would highly recommend (and have been) staying here. Cyndy, the owner is very kind and aims to please. I coordinated with her to plan the surprise proposal for our engagement during our stay at Villa Yucatan. it couldn’t have been planned any better and Cyndy was very helpful in arranging everything we needed prior to arrival. She arranged a beautiful table with flowers and candles and recommended a great private chef. An unforgettable night. Right from the front gate, the perfectly manicured grounds, the house, the location and the facilities are amazing. The house has everything you need to stay comfortable as if you had never left home. Although it’s location is not right in town, travelling by car is easy and a fun adventure. It also makes it easy to see other towns and sights in the area. Maps and guides of the area made by Cyndy are also very helpful. Honestly, we have never been to such an amazing getaway in all our travels and will definitely be a returning, even all the way from Australia.

The house’s pictures attracted us and when we arrived at Villa Yucatan, what a shock! It was even better! The combination of the luxuriant nature, the old walls around, the grass so green and this beautiful design house was magic! Everything in the casa and outdoor was well thought and it was great to live there!
The caretakers were helpful and so kind, they made our stay easier.
Villa Yucatan isn’t so far from Merida, and it’s very pleasant to come back home, after walking in this crowded town, to enjoy the peace of the house. the country around is beautiful, with many old deserted sisal factories to see and cenotes to go swimming.. Our stay in Yucatan Villa was a fantastic experience!!!! We’ll come back! Sure!

Villa Yucatan is an architectural masterpiece and without doubt the most incredible place we ever imagined staying! Amazingly when we arrived it was even more astounding than we thought possible. Everything about the property and gardens was completely effortless. Everything was where you wanted it to be if you had designed it specifically for yourself! The kitchen, sunken lounge area, pool, bedrooms and huge open windows all set off by the elegant and stylish furnishings. Around every corner is another interesting view or stunning vista. This alone would have made our honeymoon stay unforgettable. However, we also had the incredible service and attention from Cyndy (the owner – accessible remotely from about 3 months before we arrived to a fortnight after!) and the ladies and gentlemen who prepared our food, kept the house spotless and the gardens effortlessly manicured. The location is also perfect for exploring the area, though, once you arrive it is almost impossible to leave the house.. Finally I actually cannot believe the incredible value of it. We have paid 4 or 5 times this to stay in places that will not hold such as happy place in our heart as Villa Yucatan.

Surrounded by an incredible garden the unique architecture of this house with all its amenities offers recreation on the highest level. Cynthia is a great host. Even though I had some problems with the airbnb android app and there were only hours from booking to arrival, Cynthia patiently helped to get everything fixed.

First off this is the first time I have bothered to review a holiday accomodation and secondly I am not entirely sure I want to share this gem with anyone else. But in the spirit in which we were received by the most gracious hosts of Villa Yucatan. I feel duty bound to take the time to give credit where it is due. The property itself is of course stunning. Look at the pictures. It does not disappoint in the flesh and nor is it photographed omitting noisy neighbours or ugly views. Secluded, subtle and an oasis of peaceful calm. Most previous reviews mention the fireflies on the lawn of an evening. I now understand why. Impossible to put into words or indeed film or photograph. What most don’t mention is the incredible calm of early morning there. Very special. Good architectural fore thought meant my family of five ‘lived’ easily in this space. The space works very well. Location wise very convenient for Merida and the week barely gave us time to scratch the surface of all the sites within day trip distance. The Hacienda itself is of course stunning and a great contrast to the clean lines of Villa Yucatan. Utterly genuine honest hosts who are as enthused by the houses as we were. A rare find and a true ‘keeper’.

Sometimes pictures make things look better than they are in real life
(working myself in marketing, have seen this dozens of times). But even the pictures of Villa Yucatan are extremely beautiful they don’t compare with the reality of being there, nothing but silence, “private” garden larger than a football field just for you and the home made Yucatecan food from the lovely ladies of the Hacienda La Fabrica staff. I still wonder why people would prefer a five star hotel to a private residence? Probably because they haven’t experience this. Great for a romantic escape or to enjoy your family by the pool. Can’t wait to go back again to Villa Yucatan.

My wife and I flew into Cancun from Milwaukee. After meeting our son, his wife, and their thirteen month old son at the airport (they flew in from New York City), we rented a car. The three hour drive via the toll road was pleasant and there was only light traffic. We stopped at a toll road service area for cappuccino and a rest room break. The coffee shop was called “Italian Coffee” and was similar to Starbucks.
Villa Yucatan is stunning! The pictures and owner’s description are very detailed and accurate. Having said that, it was even nicer in person than we expected. We swam in the pool every day and enjoyed the two acre yard for Frisbee, etc. The staff was very helpful. We arrived to chips and homemade salsa as well as freshly baked banana bread. The house is large and well equipped. Everything that we needed was there for us. They even provided a “porta-play” type crib for the baby. The house served as a unique place to hang out as well as a base for nearby sights and activities. Within a 30 to 60 minute drive there are many Mayan ruins, cenotes, haciendas, convents and historic towns. We went to Merida (we liked Paseo Montejo which is a beautiful boulevard with old mansions); Cuzama Cenote (sadly we only had time to see and swim in one of the three cenotes there); the seaside town of Progreso (disappointing compared to Playa Del Carmen or Tulum); the nearby Hacienda Teya (we had a very nice lunch). We were only able to stay 3 nights at Villa Yucatan and wish we could have stayed longer.

My husband and I spent a wonderful 9 nights at Villa Yucatan earlier this month. We are design and architecture enthusiasts, and the house exceeded our expectations with the attention to detail and thoughtful touches. It was a delight to wake up each morning in such a beautiful setting. Late afternoons were often spent enjoying the pool and seeing the sky darken over the beautiful grounds. Our day trips included visits to Merida (including a Wednesday morning house and garden tour), Chichen Itza, Mayapan, Uxmal, a local cenote, Hacienda Temozon for a lovely brunch, Hacienda Yaxcopoil, Hacienda Ochil for an early dinner, Hacienda Xcanatun for an amazing dinner at Casa de Piedra, the charming Izamal where we enjoyed a carriage ride, and Vallodolid, among others. Bartola and her sister Soco were very helpful and unintrusive. Cyndy and Howard’s notes and suggestions were great in planning our trip and daily outings.

Villa Yucatan is a wonderful place to spend a week of your life. For my wife and me, it was as if we had been transported into an exotic world, clearly connected to today but also steeped in the history by which the Hacienda found its way to this time and place. It is more luxurious than any hotel suite at ten times the price, and comes with a well-stocked kitchen and staff. Nonetheless, if you are the all-inclusive hotel type, this place is probably not for you. The accommodations at both the Hacienda and at Villa Yucatan express a quiet tastefulness that combines a sense of high luxury without making the error of overstatement. Attention was paid to combining the modern comforts we all seek with a feel for the past. While the Hacienda consists of restored historic structures in a most pleasant way, Villa Yucatan, newly constructed, rose out of the grounds and ruins combining ancient Mayan building techniques with almost a Frank Lloyd Wright sense of style… We liked the results so much that we took our hosts up on an offer to obtain a copy of the book dedicated to its construction. Speaking of our hosts, if you are so lucky as to run into Cindy and Howie during your stay, you will encounter hosts that made us feel like longtime friends.

Hacienda La Fabrica, the magical memories still linger with color images in my mind. It was a fabulous mix of activity, architectural history, cultural diversity, epicurean surprises and days that flowed with no sense of time. Relaxing by the pool, dining with large groups of friends, candles flickering in the warm gentle evenings while the music filled the air. The attention to detail, the warmth of the owners and the gracious hospitality was not to be exceeded in all my years of experienced as a well-seasoned traveler. Would I return? Yes, however, only with my closest friends and family to share yet again this unsurpassed experience, inhale the local fragrances and feast my eyes on the tropical paradise. It is beyond a five star experience. They have established a new higher standard. Go and enjoy your dream memories.
