Raw, unadulterated and entirely at one with nature, we love how two distinct themes can environmentally coexist here. Inspired by Thoreau’s call of the wild, this beach house rental along the Oaxacan coast is a modern homage to simple living that will inspire you to unplug and reconnect with nature.
Down a rambling dirt road in what feels like the middle of nowhere, there stands a striking structure that blends a refined modern design aesthetic with a raw, primitive spirit. Just a short distance from the surfing mecca of Puerto Escondido in coastal Oaxaca, the property inhabits a solitary spot in the jungle scrub opening out to a private and wild shoreline all your own. Completed in 2014, the house was inspired by the ethos of Thoreau’s Walden Pond and is the brainchild of architect Aranza de Arino and creative director Claudio Sodi.
Constructed entirely of raw concrete with bi-folding wood shutters, the unique residence was designed as a simple modern installation that is as much about design as environment. Towering two stories tall, the house is completely open to the land with the ground floor dedicated to gathering around the huge kitchen table that extends out to the gardens.
Upstairs is the ultimate room with a view that sleeps two and downstairs, an open air bath.
Take a refreshing dip in the plunge pool or swing idly in the hammock where you can disconnect and recharge in a beach house rental that invites you to escape it all.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES
Old VW sedan rental for 200 pesos per day. Complimentary fruit basket and bottled water on arrival. Optional extra housekeeping. Pizza oven. (No wifi/internet on premises).
AROUND
Located along a remote stretch of Pacific coast, the port town of Puerto Escondido lies at the end of the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range just over one hundred miles from the inland capital of Oaxaca. Arranged around a picturesque bay dotted with gigantic rock formations, the area is divided between Bacocho Beach on the north end, the Playa Principal resort area in the middle, and the famous surfing beach of Zicatela on the south end. Considered one of the top ten surfing destinations in the world, it’s an action packed atmosphere where at night the town comes to life with parties until dawn. The famous CASA WABI by Pritzker Prize winning master architect Tadao Ando is a thirty minute drive outside of town where you can tour the house and art center. Be sure to visit the wildlife and mangrove forests of Laguna de Manialtepec just twenty minutes from the house and the ecological reserve and turtle sanctuaries of Ventanilla. Watch for the bio-luminescent tides at night where you can swim among the sparkling waters.

My partner and I enjoyed every minute of our stay at Casa Tiny! The secluded location with our own dipping pool + wood fire pizza oven was the perfect place to disconnect and relax. It was magic!

Casa Tiny is a magical and unique spot. Aesthetically stunning – an amazing fusion of modern design in a wild setting. A feeling of isolation is softened with familiar amenities like cafetière, fluffy towels and white sheets. The pizza oven gave us much joy (and sweat). We covered tortillas in local ingredients and Oaxaca cheese picked up on the way, added a sprig of Casa Tiny rosemary and had pizzas daily. Take Modellos to the sunset spot. Visit the art residence. Have a fish dinner at Hotel Escondido. Make a fire on the beach. Lounge in total solitude in the dappled pool. Wear mosquito repellant!

We have been so excited to stay at Casa Tiny and it did not disappoint! The house is exactly as it looks in photos, if not better. Claudio was very helpful over email and Juan took care of everything we needed on arrival, despite us not being able to speak any Spanish. Hotel Escondido is great for cocktails in the evening and the beach was always empty which was lovely. If you are susceptible to mosquito bites (like me) you will get bitten despite taking all precautions, but it’s all part of staying in nature! The only other thing I would mention is there is quite a bit of building work taking place opposite the house and on the beach road, meaning casa tiny is maybe not quite as isolated as it once was. We could hear it a little, but with our music playing it wasn’t a problem. It certainly would not put me off going, but something to be aware of. Thanks for an amazing stay!

It goes without saying that Casa Tiny is a dream hideaway for a secluded, private retreat. Architecturally this is a dream with compact, well designed space with additional amenities like the pool and the pizza oven which make for a unique stay where you can really make each day your own. There is nothing nearby so make sure you stock up but basic supplies are plenty – water, cooking spices, toiletries etc. The beach is close by and was empty every time we went. We slept comfortably with only the sound of the ocean but make use of the mosquito net as the open plan lay out does invite lots of insects at night. It’s magical and unbelievably priced for the experience that you get/can create for yourself. The onsite groundskeeper and his dog kept us well stocked with fire wood, water and maintained the pool for our stay. Thank you!
