We love the way sustainability can be glamorous. Once upon a time, renting an eco-friendly space meant roughing it. Today, that’s changed radically, and this villa is a great example of how. It has it all: cool design, a spectacular location and a breathtaking view – as well as a conscience.
This property is about as far off the beaten track as you could ask for. Located four hours drive from the nearest international airport, it’s high on a mountain in the middle of the Costa Rican rainforest.
With that in mind, you might expect something a little rough around the edges – but that’s far from what you’ll find. This is an elegant, upscale ‘farm’ with three different buildings, and a deck overlooking the lush rainforest and coastline.
The villa not only boasts spectacular design and views, but it was also built with highly sustainable sensibilities. The land around it is protected rainforest and the property has its own botanical garden full of fruit trees, rare bamboos and endangered trees.
The buildings were designed to use natural light as much as possible, and all hot water, lights, fridges and fans on the property are powered by solar panels. The open living space was designed with maximum cross ventilation, so AC units are confined to the bedrooms. The farm has also created what might be the largest private rainwater collection system on the Peninsula, and all products (including shampoos and soap) are chemical free and bio-degradable.
Start the day off with a farm-to-table breakfast with eggs and fruit from the farm and orchards. You can spend the rest of the day by the pool, take the private trail to Hermosa Beach, or ask the concierge to book you an in-house massage, a private yoga class, a surf lesson or a boat trip up the coast.
When guests leave, a tree is planted for each of them, and 1% of their rental fee is donated to a local water project called the Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper.
The whole farm includes three separate buildings. The main house has three bedrooms – two doubles and one with three single beds. The two separate guest houses have one double bedroom, a bathroom and small kitchen each. Guests requiring only three bedrooms can rent the main house on its own, but (to guarantee privacy) the other two buildings will never be rented out to other clients at the same time.
The estate is situated by Hermosa Beach in Santa Teresa, on the Nicoya Peninsula. Hermosa is one minute away by car, Santa Teresa Beach five minutes away, and a driver is on hand to take guests (and their surfboards) down to the beaches (or farther afield). For those who prefer to walk, it takes about 10 minutes and is a great workout.
The beaches around Playa Hermosa and Santa Teresa boast some of the best waves in the world all year round, and there is something for every level of surfer.

Private charter flights are available from either airport to Tambor where a driver will be waiting to bring you to the property. Journey time for driving is between 4 and 5 hours from either city.
