There’s no compromising with this Costa Rican mountaintop villa. It uses space extravagantly, yet quirky design features show you can never be too grand to have a sense of humor.
This may be one of the grandest rental properties in Mal Pais, Costa Rica, but that’s not what we love about it.
Yes, it is perched high on a mountaintop, overlooking the rainforest and Pacific coastline. Yes, it has three enormous master suites, each with its own living area and private, open-air bathroom. Yes, it has a dramatic outside dining table that seats 20. And yes, it has access to a helipad.
But it’s the high ceilings and polished concrete floors that we love, the sense of lavish space, as rooms lead to open terraces and sweeping vistas, and the unique furnishings – especially the beautiful carved wooden four-poster beds.
Then there’s the Moroccan-themed open-air living room on a wooden deck that looks out over the pool. The walk-in infinity pool itself wraps around the villa, and leads to two further pools and spa.
Least expected, however, are the outdoor showers made from weathered tree trunks, and the baths carved from natural stone and nestled in walled gardens. At once quirky and luxurious, they add a clever design twist to the property that we really love.
Outdoor games area with pool table, as well as media room, satellite TV, and air conditioning.
The house is conveniently located within easy reach of Mal Pais. The town has a laid-back, unpopulated, small village vibe, unlike the adjacent beaches of Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen, which are two of the top surfing destinations in Costa Rica.
Old jungle grows right down to the beach in places, and volcanic deposits form curious shapes along the coast. The local marine life is protected. Rent a boat or take a fishing tour around the Nicoya Peninsula, and you may catch sight of dolphins, manta rays, sea turtles or whales.
Mal Pais is adjacent to the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, where you can take canopy tours or horse tours. And within the park is the beautiful Playa Cuevas beach, one of the area’s best snorkelling spots.
