We love the juxtaposition of traditional with modern in this cool little holiday rental in Nova Scotia. With its traditional gabled roof, it has old-fashioned sensibilities, but its steel exterior and strong angles lend it a much more modern feel. It’s in a great location, at “the end of the Earth” – on a remote part of the Atlantic coast, with views of the LaHave Islands and surrounding mountains. Part of a small village of rental properties, it’s also perfect for events.
This striking property in Nova Scotia was designed by architect Brian MacKay-Lyons and engineered by Reneé MacKay-Lyons. Made from Corten steel on the outside and wooden beams and steel on the inside, it sits in a little cluster of vacation rentals on the rugged Atlantic coast.
The site was once a farm but was in ruins until MacKay started to transform it. At first, it was all about experimental architecture and creative gatherings, then he decided to create something more sustainable. Today, it’s an eclectic collection of architecturally diverse properties, from a converted 19th-century schoolhouse to this creative modern two-story cabin.
We love the interiors, with their simple design and mixed modern and vintage furnishings. A dramatic 24ft wide corner window cuts a slice out of the lower level of the house and looks out over the valley to the north. Another 12ft wide window offers views of Hirtle’s Beach in the distance. There are two terraces, one with a fire pit – which is great for hanging out under the stars.
The house can sleep five guests on two queen beds upstairs and in a sleeping area on a plinth on the ground level. There are also two single beds in a loft that can be accessed via ladder from the upstairs.
This holiday rental in Nova Scotia is a really great find, and offers a getaway that’s well off the beaten track. As the owners say, “If you’re looking for Motel 6, you don’t come here. If you’re looking for nature and a physical relationship to nature — kayaking, swimming, surfing, fishing — you come here. If you want to be alone and write a book, you can do that as well.”
The house has a fully-equipped kitchen with fridge/freezer, oven, cook-top, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, kettle and coffeemaker. There is a TV with digital cable and a DVD player, a telephone and wireless internet. There is also a fireplace, private parking, and a private fire pit. There are shared laundry facilities and three shared barbecues.
The homes are also eco-conscious, with sheep roaming freely around them, an organic vegetable garden and trout ponds, as well as solar energy.
The peninsula on which the house is located is very isolated. But it’s also close enough to urban landscapes to keep all kinds of guests amused. Across from the house are the LaHave Islands, which can be reached by kayak. The property is also near Mahone Bay, which has around 460 islands, as well as little towns like Chester and Bridgewater, a little fishing village called Bluerocks, and the UNESCO World Heritage Town of Lunenberg. Halifax is 1 1/4 hours away, and Cape Breton is slightly farther.
The owners offer horseback riding lessons in the summer, and there are folk art and music festivals in the nearby village. There is no public transport, and a car is recommended.
Upper Kingsburg, Nova Scotia. Nearest airport: Halifax International Airport (130km).
