What we like about this property

We love a cottage by the sea, and this cabin rental in Nova Scotia is located in a place of spectacular beauty and privacy. Charming and full of character, it’s a welcoming and comfortable retreat within minutes of the famous Cabot Trail and all the natural beauty of Cape Breton Island.

Description

Perched on a cliff in complete seclusion overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence, this cabin rental in Nova Scotia is situated near the renown Cabot Trail surrounded by over one hundred and thirty acres of wooded forest and windswept highlands.

The traditional coastal design mimics the maritime architecture of the region with shingle and clapboard construction that maintains the historical Cape Breton style. Designed and built by artists and native Canadians, the house was a labor of love that reflects their appreciation for the area, its culture, history and traditions. Charming and comfortable, the open plan living space features vaulted beamed ceilings that lend it a bright and airy feel with a fully equipped kitchen and dining area for four all surrounded by windows for spectacular views. Decorated with both rustic and contemporary furnishings and decor, the house has a welcoming and homey feel with two cozy bedrooms that sleep up to four guests comfortably.

The outside of the cottage is just as stunning as the inside with a large exterior deck positioned perfectly to spot lobster boats, eagles, moose, bobcats, and whales passing by most of the year, and from where you’ll catch dramatic sunsets and panoramic views. You can also fire up the grill for dining al fresco.

A world of natural beauty is at your doorstep, from the warm sands of Chimney Corner beach, to the world-renowned Margaree river (great for salmon and trout fishing) to a mature hardwood forest to explore.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Broadband internet access, land line telephone, stereo and music library, books,  and local guide/maps, climate control (AC/heat). Weekly housekeeping and linen change included for stays longer than a week.

AROUND

Located at the eastern end of Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island lies along the Gulf of St. Lawrence where the famous Cabot Trail roadway encircles the island. Passing through rugged coastline and forests and along the edges of Cape Breton Highlands National Park, the road takes you through spectacular scenic beauty. Less than thirty minutes north, the park has an extensive network of hiking trails including the Skyline Trail that overlooks the gulf, as well as dramatic waterfalls, rivers and highlands. Both the fabulous beach and bluffs of Whale Cove and the beaches and lighthouse of Margaree Harbor are within a few minutes drive, while the beach nearest the cottage is ideal for swimming in warm months. Head south down the dramatically beautiful Broad Cove Road on the way to the town of Inverness, with it’s great pubs and cafes as well as a local music and arts and crafts scene.  With its mix of Celtic, Acadian and Native cultures, the island has a rich history and unique traditions with various music and cultural festivals throughout the year.  A breeding ground for migratory whales, the area is also home to a diverse and abundant array of wildlife.

    Peaceful Sanctuary with Stunning View!
For us, two of the most important aspects of a trip are the accommodation and view. We couldn’t have done any better than the Cape Cottage. The interior is straight out of a design magazine; vaulted ceilings, big windows, natural materials, and attention to detail. The kitchen appliances are state of the art. There is gas burning stove in the main area and one of the most generous showers we’ve ever encountered. The overall impression was one of peaceful sanctuary. Outside, there is forest on 3 sides and the ocean in front. From the deck we filmed whales and amazing sunsets. At night, the stars were overwhelming.

We were given perfect directions by the owner, Stewart, so had no trouble finding the location. Once there, he gave us the inside track on the area. On one of his suggested oceanside routes we drove beside a bald eagle. We hiked the Skyline Trail which was spectacular. The local beach was beautiful as was the boardwalk/beach at Inverness.

We really enjoyed the Dancing Goat cafe, especially the porridge bread. The Two Macs craft shop across the street provided us with some really interesting local art, along with Bell Fraser’s pottery shop in Margaree.

We are still talking to friends and sharing pictures about our wonderful time in September.

Perfect spot to explore Cape Breton
This cottage was very comfortable. Designed and built by Stewart, the owner, the cottage had great windows with views of the water and sunsets that were breathtaking. We spent a week here and found this to be a great location for day tripping around Cape Breton. Stewart spent a lot of time when we checked in making sure we had a good plan for seeing everything in the area. His pointers for off the beaten path destinations made the trip

Quaint escape in beautiful natural setting…
Tucked away location perfect for relaxing while being surrounded by a pristine forrest setting. The cottage itself has a minimalist European feel with all of the essentials provided. Comfortable bedding, an accommodating and friendly host, the nearby towns are both beautiful and fun to explore. Whale watching, hiking, and cafes are all close. A perfect beach is walking distance away. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation in a beautiful setting this is it!

Magnificient views inside and outside — a perfect place.

The Cape Cottage was perfect – a beautiful cottage with a magnificent view of the ocean – exactly as depicted in the listing. We never tired of the views from the deck and from the huge windows. The deck is a great place to watch the sunset and to view the stars, which were incredible in the absolutely dark skies.

The cottage was very clean and had very comfortable furnishings and bed, and all in an incredibly quiet and private setting. We also loved the style of the cottage’s interior, with white-washed wooden walls, very high ceilings, and huge windows, which demanded that you constantly look out at the ocean and trees. Everything one would need to spend a delightful week was included.
Stewart met with us on the first day and gave us great tips on restaurants, hiking trails, and many other interesting things to see and do. The Cape Cottage is a great location for exploring both near—lovely Chimney Corner beach or the Broad Cove area—and far—driving the entire Cabot Trail or hiking the Skyline Trail. And we loved The Dancing Goat Café and Bakery, which Stewart recommended, and now have become hopelessly addicted to their breakfasts and cookies.
And some well-intentioned advice when estimating travel times to and around Cape Breton Island: always add 45 minutes because as you drive you’ll have to stop multiple times as a new, jaw-dropping vista comes into view, and you are forced to pull-over and enjoy it.
We loved staying at the Cape Cottage.

    Absolutely incredible stay!

We stayed at the Cape Cottage for our July 2017 honeymoon and it was perfect in every way. The cottage was beautiful and well-equipped, and the view from the deck (and from inside) is one that truly does not get old. Our only dilemma throughout our stay was whether to explore more of Cape Breton’s majestic scenery or simply spend additional time sitting on the deck – either way, you cannot go wrong.

Everything about the cottage was exactly as advertised, if not better. Stewart went above and beyond in informing us about local points of interest and some of our favourite moments/activities were things we would not have known about otherwise. As an added bonus, everything we wanted to do on Cape Breton is easily accessible from the Cape Cottage, so we made it back for many beautiful sunsets even after a full day of exploring the island.
We honestly cannot recommend this cottage enough and are already eager to return!

    Idyllic
We couldn’t have chosen a more idyllic setting for our summer vacation. Stewart’s cottage overlooks the beautiful Northumberland Strait to the west so we caught every glorious sunset. It fact, it was so beautiful I rarely wanted to leave the deck chair. That said we still cycled, golfed, swam, hiked, danced, yachted our way across Cape Breton Island, one of Canada’s truly great vacation destinations. The cottage is clean and well-kept, the kitchen useful and pretty. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom new, and the sea breezes kept us cool making it easy to sleep after hot days. For active vacationers there is plenty to interest you and a good respite for city-dwellers. This location is snug on the hill and plenty quiet for book-readers like me. And the WiFi was reliable. We took two teenagers and they also loved the place and had enough privacy in their own bedroom.

    Elegant refuge

The location is a peaceful refuge. The design, construction, furnishing of this cabin make it truly elegant and comfortable, and yet essentially simple. Stewart is a gracious host and a thoughtful source of knowledge about Cape Breton. The island is a great place for birding. It’s rich in warblers and seabirds. The gannets are magnificent.

We returned to the Cape Cottage this summer after missing last year’s visit due to illness; it was like coming home again! The whole family (kids ages 7 and 2) loves it: the spectacular view (especially at sunset), the awesome kid-friendly Chimney Corner beach just 3 minutes away, the home-like comfort of the cottage, and the peacefulness. It is THE perfect spot to spend a Cape Breton summer vacation. We are already looking forward to next year!

I would HIGHLY recommend you stay at the Cape Cottage (or one of the Stewart’s other properties) during your trip to Cape Breton. We just returned from a week’s stay and can’t say enough wonderful things about it. The cottage itself is perfectly appointed and well decorated. It’s a very private setting, but the cottage feels open, airy and bright with stunning views and dramatic sunsets. The photos provided on this page are absolutely accurate–it really is that beautiful! Stewart is a fantastic and gracious host. He truly made sure we had everything we needed and spent some time helping us get familiar with the area and made terrific suggestions for our trip. He even brought us a telescope so we could further enjoy watching lobster boats and bald eagles from our cottage!

Also, Cape Breton is quite large and we felt the Margaree Harbour area was the perfect home base. We’re cyclists and spent our days pedaling along the gorgeous and quiet roads in the Margaree Valley and along the coast. Then would head home for some afternoon beach time to cool off at Chimney Corner just minutes from the cottage (by far the best beach we found on our trip too!). The Cape Cottage is about a 30 minute drive to the Highlands National Park, which is also very convenient. If you are a cyclist, Cape Breton is a beautiful and challenging destination. The hills are tough but the views are breathtaking. The roads are easy to navigate and most are in great condition too.

If you are someone who likes to cook, like we do, the cottage has everything you need to prepare great meals. We preferred to shop and cook for ourselves as no restaurant had a better view than our cottage in the evening. Like many of the other reviewers here, we couldn’t wait to get back to the cottage in the evenings to enjoy the sunset. You will be so happy you decided to stay in the Cape Cottage!

We traveled to Cape Breton and the Cape Cottage last week hoping that all the reviews were accurate, but you never know do you? It turns out everything was absolutely true and then some. The cottage is absolutely perfect. It is modern yet rustic, and in absolutely the perfect location. Stewart couldn’t have been more accommodating, spending plenty of time helping us get acquainted with the area. His expertise and guidance was invaluable.

We spent a lot of time in the late afternoons at the cottage waiting for the sunset, which was always spectacular. The days were spent in Inverness hunting for sea glass, in the national park hiking and seeing moose and other wildlife, and exploring the local area and beaches.

Cape Breton is spectacular, and this house is a gem. We can’t recommend it highly enough.

We have visited Cape Breton every summer for the last few years to see my wife’s family, and since the Cape Cottage was built we have stayed there. The Cape Cottage offers a spectacular view of the ocean, Margaree Island, and the horizon, with magnificent sunsets. The cabin is tastefully decorated and you immediately feel at home. It is a very private spot, but you are not far from several beaches, Inverness, Margaree, The Dancing Goat (anything on their breakfast menu is higly recommended, as well as their lunch, cinnamon rolls, squares and cookies), several golf courses and the National Park.

Cape Breton is known for its scenery, but what I love about it are the people: friendly, welcoming and polite. Stewart and Bell, the owners of the cottage, are prime examples of this.

We will be back again next summer!

There is always a chance for disappointment when choosing a place to stay while on vacation if you are relying on internet searches as opposed to word of mouth advice, however, we certainly got it right when we chose Stewart and Belle’s Cape Cottage for our Cape Breton week. My wife and I had been wanting to visit Cape Breton for a while and figured our 20th anniversary was the right excuse. The Cape Cottage turned out to be the perfect spot….and what a view. if you enjoy sunsets it doesn’t get any better. We did quite a bit of traveling on the Cabot trail and both agree that the west side of the island is the place to be. If we were out for a day we always found ourselves racing back to catch the sunset. The cottage was immaculate and cozy with a small wood stove style gas heater that was perfect to take the chill off on a couple of the cool mornings. Plenty to do close by and Stewart spent an hour or so with us the first day imparting local knowledge regarding things “not to miss” as well as some things that may not be worth our time……..very helpful. Whatever you do be sure to leave plenty of time for just “setting” and enjoying the view!

My husband and I had a fabulous time at Cape Cottage and highly recommend it! The location is unparalleled. It was super private and quiet with breathtaking views. The cottage itself was very updated and luxurious, with comfy beds and a heated bathroom floor! Stewart was a fantastic host. He was very attentive to our needs and had great recommendations for fabulous local events and restaurants. Overall, our stay here was one of the best vacations we’ve had and we are already planning our next trip back!

Our family had the best week in Cape Cottage last summer of our whole road trip from Bangor to Cape Breton. The location is truly magical, amazing views of the ocean and wildlife passing by. We saw a shoal of dolphins easily 50+ one morning and bald eagles overhead.Cape Cottage is very private surrounded by woodland and a beautiful meadow which the children adored. The cottage itself is immaculate, modern with rustic touches, perfect veranda for relaxing and star gazing in the evenings. It is safe for the children to roam freely in the cottage’s surroundings. Ours spent hours catching grasshoppers in the meadow in front of the cottage. Stewart was the perfect host – we had lots of questions as it was our first time in Cape Breton, he provided excellent advice and tips for making the most of our week- he couldn’t have been more helpful. There is so much to do and see nearby, and of course the most stunning beach- quiet, perfect for our small children and situated a few minutes down from the cottage.
This place is a Gem. The combination of the gorgeous cottage, the local landscape and proximity to the beach plus hosts that go out of their way to make your stay memorable is unsurpassable in our opinion. We are extremely fortunate to be returning for another stay this summer and have been counting the days!!
Thank you Stewart and Bell for making our holiday last year.
