What we like about this property

Beautiful, natural, Tuscany.  The joie de vivre is evident immediately here and the attention to detail and celebration of the slow life are honored. We love the story of the passion invested and vision it took to create such a beautiful and personal retreat.  This is the good life.

The long journey to find and restore this 9th century farmhouse was a labor of love and it shows. Overlooking the bucolic Tuscan countryside and nestled within rows of vineyards and olive groves, the land is alive with life.

Renovated with a light touch and an eye for period detail, the house has been transformed into a luxurious yet simple B&B. The historic structure retains it’s original character and heart and is infused with great vintage details and decor along with subtle contemporary touches creating an artistic and welcoming vibe. With ancient stone walls, salvaged materials and doors, and stone floors, the middle ages still shine alongside the minimalist, modern amenities and silhouettes.

Joined by brick archways, the farmhouse includes four complete suites with living areas and en suite baths while the outbuilding features two smaller double rooms, all of which have lovely garden and country views. Each has been individually updated to preserve their original characteristics and feature clever and very personalized detail and all are luxuriously peaceful. You will be encouraged to slow down and enjoy the pace and lifestyle here and will be treated to the always amazing locally grown organic food at brunch daily.

Rustic and pastoral, this is a unique opportunity to savor the beauty of life’s essentials while appreciating your host’s philosophy of treasuring the rhythms and heritage of Tuscan farm life.

Brunch is served daily with seasonal locally produced and organic foods sourced from neighboring farms. Water and soft drinks provided. Busatti luxury linens and robes, personal care items provided. Hot tub. Pre-programmed GPS and on site parking. Wifi throughout.

Endlessly picturesque, Tuscany remains one of the most idealized settings on earth. For good reason! Ideally situated close to Siena, Perugia and nearby Pienza, you’ll  want a car to explore and experience the region. Neighboring Val d’Orcia is a UNESCO World Heritage site as is the remarkable hilltop village of Montepulciano. The food, the wine, the stunning scenery are all you’ll need.

This place is an absolutely charming farmhouse set in a gorgeous Tuscan valley. Grape vines in every direction, the peace and quiet that one can experience at Follonico is simply majestic. Chickens, dogs, a donkey, and wonderful hosts Fabio and Suzanne; what more could any peace-loving traveller want. Perhaps some of Italy’s best pasta?… well that’s available just a short drive away in Montefollonico. Superb wine?… there’s no shortage of that in the surrounding areas. But back to Follonico, which is sympathetically renovated and decorated in a quirky manner and certainly not short of character. If the true test of any accommodation is whether or not you would return for a second helping, then Follonico must pass the test with flying colours, as we cannot wait to go back.

Aside from getting lost on the way to Follonico, our visit was a huge success from start to finish. We were driving without GPS and found it difficult to locate the hotel on our own. A quick call to Susanne, and she sorted us out and had us headed to her within 5 minutes. Upon arrival, we discovered we’d been upgraded to a suite, which was a lovely surprise. We slept in a comfortable bedroom with sitting room and en suite attached. The room we were originally going to sleep in was smaller but no less divine, with stunning views of the vineyards from the windows. We asked for recommendations for dinner in the area and Susanne recommended an organic farm about 20 minutes’ drive away. Knowing we had no GPS, she loaned us her TomTom, which was already set up for us. This was a very clever idea! Before leaving for dinner, we lazed about in lawn chairs out front, and enjoyed watching her little chickens frolicking on the grass. When not admiring the chicks, we were mesmerised by the views of vineyards and ancient towns in the distance. The next morning, we rose to a delicious breakfast served in the main house, and Susanne offered us plenty of advice on how to get to our next destination, including stops for lunch and areas of historical interest. Our only regret is that we didn’t stay longer. One day is definitely not enough!

“Follonico is a six-room B&B in a 19th-century stone farmhouse four miles from the medieval hilltop hamlet of Montefollonico. The house has been restored by Fabio Firli and his Dutch wife, Suzanne Simons, in an elegant style that is part ‘salvaged’, part Italian retro, and is very much an expression of the ‘slow’ movement they feel passionate about. There are four suites in the main house, with beds dressed in local linen, really good showers and direct garden access, and two more rooms in an outbuilding that share a private terrace and hot tub. The daily breakfast, served in a bright dining room (where there is also an honesty bar) or outside in good weather, is all sourced from their own kitchen garden or local organic producer friends. For other meals the couple will recommend the best local restaurants and set up private tastings.”

to make the right decision…Staying at Follonico was one of those times. I’m not overly sentimental or emotional and have traveled a fair deal through my life and always believed that to truly experience the “place” you’re visiting you must live like the locals live. At no time traveling has this made me feel more secure in my beliefs than during my time at this wonderful farmhouse. Suzanne and Fabio, from start to finish, made us feel as though we were the only reason they were there. From the moment we walked in and heard their beautiful little daughters playing in their living-room to the indescribable breakfasts of pastries, fruit, frittata, coffees, granola, and wonderful advice on where we should travel to, including leveraging their relationships at the local horse ranch, winery, and wonderful restaurants, there was never a moment when we felt as though they were doing this any reason other than they cared about our trip. I will recommend this wonderful farmhouse to all my friends and will, without a doubt, stay here again. It was magical!
