We’ve always been fond of the back-to-basics philosophy, and this small boutique hotel in the Catskills is an homage to simplicity. Designed as a rustic escape where the gorgeous scenery is the star, you won’t need much more than the simple comforts of a hammock, a bonfire under the stars, and the sound of the nearby stream.
Spruceton Inn West Kill, New York
Set on over eight acres in an idyllic valley, this boutique hotel in the Catskills is a peaceful escape devoted to simple living. First settled in the 1800s with many subsequent incarnations, the property was formerly a working farm, a private residence and a hotel. Built in the 1960s as a hunting lodge and left derelict and dated for decades, the motel structure was restored by a pair of transplanted New Yorkers who transformed the mid-century strip style rooms with a rustic minimalism.
Bright and simple with whitewashed interiors, each of the nine rooms has been pared down to the basics and furnished with a sparse selection of hand crafted furniture and a muted palette to allow the location and scenery to take center stage. Each room sleeps two and six come equipped with kitchenettes for self catering.
The property includes a neighboring barn and the farmhouse where the owners live as well as a bar and canteen serving locally crafted brew, wine and cider as well as snacks. There are hammocks and lounge chairs scattered throughout the property as well as three fire pits and grills for enjoying the great outdoors.
The owners host an Artist-in-Residence Program throughout the year offering week long stays to artists and writers as well as other local market events and weddings.
Natural, uncomplicated and down to earth, this is the kind of living that never goes out of style.
Wifi (in common area), complimentary freshly ground coffee and pastries, library of books and maps, yard games, kitchen amenities and fresh herbs from the garden, all natural bath products, firewood.
Two hours north of New York City, West Kill is an idyllic hamlet in the northwestern Catskill mountains and offers a quiet country setting with many quaint towns and districts to explore including nearby Phoenicia, Margaretteville, Andes, Bovina, Roxbury, Hunter, Tannersville and Woodstock. Dotted with farms, mountains and streams, the area is a recreational wonderland with an extensive network of national park land for hiking (Diamond Notch Fall and West Kill summit are just five minutes from the inn) and plenty of sweet places to discover and enjoy. Pack a picnic and set out for the countryside, or do a farm crawl for the latest harvest. You can fish right from the backyard of the inn at Schoharie Creek and in winter, the nearby slopes of Hunter Mountain, Belleyare Mountain and Plattekill Mountain are within a short drive.
