Essaouira's Atmospheric Medina
Located in Morocco's favorite beach town of Essaouira, this beautiful riad is a 200-year-old home in the Chbanat area of the ancient medina, famous for its textile and crafts workshops. Designed over four floors, with two bright rooftop terraces for outside dining, the restored residence has been beautifully restored for utmost comfort.
Essaouira's Atmospheric Medina
We are always looking for great vacation homes for rent in Morocco, and we love this one. A beautifully-restored 18th-century home, it is located in the heart of Essaouira's ancient medina and exceeds all expectations. It sleeps eight guests comfortably over four floors in great style and comfort but is surprisingly inexpensive.
A lovely house in the free-spirited coastal resort of Essaouira, it's located in the Chbanat area in the heart of the ancient medina, which is famous for its textile workshops. Characterful to say the least, it's an 18th-century building that's been restored while retaining all its original features, from sandstone columns and thuya wood ceilings to traditional black-and-white tiled floors.
Each of the house's four bedrooms sleeps two, and has its own wet-room bathrooms. The property is split over four floors, and has two large, bright roof terraces, with a kitchen and bar - perfect for outside dining looking out across the rooftops of the ancient medina. There are also two large lounge rooms with fireplaces and comfy chairs.
MOROCCO'S BEACH TOWN
Essaouira is southern Morocco’s favorite beach town, located within a few hours of Marrakech. Unlike the big city, Essaouira is laidback and timeless with sandy-colored ramparts, whitewashed avenues, French-style piazzas, and a port full of azure blue fishing boats.
The medina, a Unesco World Heritage Site, and the beautiful fishing harbor are great places to explore; both have a great selection of restaurants. There is a stunning sandy beach within a 10-minute stroll from the house, which is great for kite- and windsurfing. Other potential adventures include camel rides to the famous crumbling fort Bordj El Berod.
The house manager will meet guests on arrival, take them on a short tour of the medina and can help arrange excursions.
LOCATION
Essaouira, Morocco. Nearest airport: Essaouira (20mins drive); Marrakech (2.5hrs drive). Owners can organize taxis for both.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Climate-wise, spring and autumn are the best times of the year to visit Morocco, although summer is Essaouira is pleasantly hot. Winter can be chilly, especially at night. The Gnaoua World Music Festival, Essaouira's biggest annual event, is held for three days, every June - early booking is recommended.

September 26, 2023 An incredible city, home, and host Came to Essaouira on a whim and almost entirely because of the pictures of 5 Columns. The house is every bit as beautiful as it seems in pictures — I couldn't stop taking picture of the furniture and textiles — but it was Lisa's hosting that truly made the trip so exceptional. She has a fantastic list of things to do and she was unbelievably responsive to every single message I sent. Staying at Lisa's home made this trip so easy and her insightful, friendly advice made it easy to make the most of Essaouira. Hugely grateful to her for making this trip really special.
April 05, 2023 An escape of delightful beauty and ambience As soon as we arrived and entered 5 Columns it was just an attack on the creative senses. A pure WOW moment on entering the Riad. Beautifully interior designed amd impossible to choose which room to sleep in as each one has its own personal beauty from the artwork and layout in each room so much attention to detail. A relaxing vibe and the table in the kitchen really is a place to talk your hearts out. “the table of truth” location wise it’s so close to everything a shopping paradise and Lisa the host prepared us well with all the best places to eat and visit. It was a short stay of 4 nights and was so sad to leave as a piece of my heart is still left there to pick up upon my return. I left wanting more and certainly will be back. Amazing value and a space to die for. The food made for us on arrival by the lovely house keeper was also wonderful. I recommend this place 150% book you will not regret it.
September 21, 2023 Great place to stay Good location, nicely designed house with great beds and nice outdoor areas. The house manager Rachid meets you on arrival and gives you a quick and helpful orientation to the medina. Lisa is always available to answer questions and recommends some great places to eat. Had a great 4 day stay here.
March 23, 2023 The most incredible house in the Medina! Essaouira’s jewel! dinner from Fatima really started our trip off to a brilliant start. Essaouira offers wonderful water sports, shopping, gorgeous hammam spas, sunset bars and the sounds of beautiful prayers. One week was not enough! Lisa the host is brilliant at responding and really letting you know about all the superb places to visit and the hidden gems. My friends and I had fab lunches on the beach, we bought art, candles, beautiful vases and spices! A trip to remember - I can’t wait to go back! 10/10
July 18, 2023 Fantastic property in Essaouira’s Medina Our second visit to 5 Columns and certainly not our last. It’s a beautifully furnished, spacious house within the walls of Essaouira’s vibrant and authentic medina. 5 columns has two rooftop terraces and a bar area where you can chill and relax. Really like that you have shops, a working market and numerous restaurants and cafes all within 5 minutes walk of the house. And the beautiful beach is only 10 minutes walk away. Rachid and Fatima are always at hand to assist and Lisa gave us lots of information and tips about the house and Essaouira in general. Can’t wait to go back!
December 14, 2022 Such a magical place We had a super holiday with friends in Essaouira. And that is definitely thanks to the wonderful accommodation, Lisa's good care and the incredibly sweet Fatima. The riad is really amazing, beautifully decorated and very well located. I really fell in love with the atmosphere and super friendly people in Essaouira. Just opening the front door in the morning and soaking up the vibe of the crack of dawn made us really happy. We actually still miss it...so we will definitely come back! Once again super thank you!
