    An Early 20th-Century Mallorquin Townhouse

This vacation home rental in Mallorca tells a very personal story of travel, design and inspiration. The home of a German expat, it's filled with one-of-a-kind style and personality, in a charming island village full of life.

    An Early 20th-Century Mallorquin Townhouse

A five-minute walk from the main square of Montuiri, this vacation home rental in Mallorca offers peaceful, country village living and unobstructed views over the Tramuntana mountains and endless rolling hills.

Discovered by a German stylist who made a conscious decision to move to the countryside, she chose this sleepy village for its location and the immediate impact that the house had on her.

Built in 1935, the building is modest and intimate but with generous living areas and a welcoming vibe that encourages togetherness with family and friends. Crisp whitewashed exteriors and a unique sculpture from the previous owner on the facade draws the attention to the house from the outside while inside is an oasis of calm. The many large windows and high ceilings are atypical for  Spanish village homes but are a welcome addition, flooding the spaces with natural light and air.

The entrance opens into the ground floor spaces with original terrazzo floors and soothing white interiors. At the center of the house is the low line kitchen and open dining area with glass doors extending out to the patio. This is the heart of the house and serves especially in the summer, as additional living space and is warmed by a stone fireplace in winter. The original art nouveau Baldosas hidráulicas cement tiles are still partially produced in Mallorca.

Similar to many Mallorquin townhouses, the upper floor is accessed by stairs carved out of stone which lead to the living room and the three bedrooms. The peaceful en suite master overlooks the rooftops to the mountains and is the perfect haven for dreaming. From the reading room, you can step onto the balcony above the courtyard gardens below.

Designed according to the motto: "Things that please me get along with each other," the owner's keen sense of personal style expertise in design fills the house with inspiration and eclecticism with old Spanish cabinets paired with Charles & Eames chairs, Louis XIV sofas with Thonet rocking chairs and original 60s Mallorquin garden chairs with Ikea dining tables.

Loaded with inspiration from her world travels, the items tell stories of their destinations; from bull skulls found in the mountains of Tarifa,  Chinese lamps from Panjiayuan Flea Market in Beijing, Portuguese porcelain, and even treasures found on the street.

Outside is a surprising and lush tropical styled garden, full of color in the Spring with a plunge pool that creates a cooling natural oasis.

The dining table on the terrace is used all year round and the large Thai bed is the perfect spot to enjoy a siesta in the shade of the pergola while watching the sun go down behind the mountain.

    MALLORCA'S TRAMUNTANA

Located in the central plains and hills of the island, the hilltop village of Montuiri is a charming and historic medieval town characterized by the famous seven windmills at its crest. There are many great restaurants and cafe's within walking distance including L’Hostal which serves the famous Mallorcan Pa amb oli, and a great Monday market that brings the village together with the best local produce. During the summer months, there is often live music played outside on the terraces of local restaurants to enjoy in the warm night air. The local museum in Son Fornes is definitely worth a visit to see how village life has existed here for centuries.

Halfway between the capital and the southern coast, the main road intersects the island for access to either side with the beautiful Es Trenc beach just a twenty minute ride away. Palma is also within 20 minutes drive and these days has become more like a mini Barcelona, with stylish bars, cafes, restaurants and shopping and the stunning Cathedral of Palma La Seu at its heart.

Don't miss nearby Santa Catalina food market on Saturday afternoons with its “Tardeo” time that turns the streets into a big meeting point of people, food and fun. The old fisherman's village of Portixol just outside of Palma has become the new hot spot to live, and is an ideal spot for a stroll at the beach and some tapas.
