Honoring the home’s humble rural history, the refurbishment was calibrated to show off the building’s simple, raw qualities and recreate a serene, slow-living, small city hideaway. Located near the river in a cobbled community where time has seemingly stood still, the two-story townhouse was stripped back to its thick country walls and soaring pitched ceilings, with its rustic wood shutters and doors refashioned. Aged, smoked oak floors were laid and a soft, matte-pink plaster applied the walls, imbuing the home with a quiet, gentle style that’s also unaffectedly modern. The upstairs area is now open plan and airy, its ceiling timbers whitewashed and bright over the new kitchen, dining, and living room, the kitchen counter area featuring glinting white azulejos set in pale pink mortar. Ground-level bedrooms and baths are soothing spaces enclosed in matte plaster walls and simply furnished with several standout pieces, once tricks of the resident baker’s trade, found during the home’s gutting. Brass olive oil bottles, wicker wrapped jugs, baking tools and even old banknotes have been saved and reused artfully as simple décor with a back story.AROUNDSet on the banks of the Sado River, the rural Portuguese town of Alcácer do Sal has been a place of retreat for the home’s owners for a decade. Rice paddies and a nature reserve surround the small urban community for miles in every direction beyond its flowering cobbled streets, shaded alleys, and tumble of whitewashed homes that climb up from the riverbanks. The town is one of Portugal’s oldest settlements, dating from Neolithic times, passing through Greek, Phoenician and Roman eras, too. Because of its privileged location on the river, the community thrived as an ancient port city and flourishing site of the town’s namesake salt trade that supplied regions near and far. The small city’s narrow streets and picturesque alleys all lead uphill to a dominant castle, once a Moorish fort of some 30 lookout towers, later conquered by Crusaders and the Portuguese King Alfonso II. Within this fertile river delta, flamingos flock, and the protected estuary is home to dolphins and abundant bird life, too. The beaches of Comporta are only about 20 minutes away, and other beaches along the Tróia Peninsula, known for their powder white sand backed by evergreen forests and dense scrub, give the peninsula's turquoise coves a deserted island vibe.LOCATIONAlcácer do Sal, Alentejo, Portugal. Since 2010, the number of Kyo-Machiyas have been whittled from 50,000 to 8000, all in the name of progress, practicality, and the ever-dreaded foe of heritage architecture: parking lots. And so it was clear: Kyoto was the chosen city, and the preservation of Kyo-Machiyas would be the architectural endeavor. The friends acquired two Kyo-Machiyas, each over a century old, and committed to engaging Kyotorian artisans with the necessary traditional know-how for the restoration, to offer a home that is made in Kyoto, by Kyoto craftsmen, for the world.What we love? The anecdote of the artisan who took to the task of reinforcing a structural pillar by grafting on new piece of wood, painstakingly carving the grain patterns of the older wood into the new before oiling and staining it to ensure a seamless blend. The house is filled with photographs of the region and local contemporary art, and bold handmade tiles are used liberally. The hallway and living room floors feature Projecto Mosaico tiles from Sintra, the master bathroom, lower level bathroom and the kitchen are lined with ArteVida tiles from Estremoz. These are the only two factories in Portugal that still make hydraulic mosaic tiles.The living room is a cozy space that leads into the kitchen and the first of three terraces, which has beautiful views across the town. A staircase leads to the open-plan master bedroom/bathroom with its vaulted wooden ceiling and free-standing bath. It, in turn, leads to the top-floor lounge terrace. The place to spend afternoons and watch sunsets, this terrace has a lounge sofa, as well as an outside shower and an outdoor 'kitchen'.  There is an additional double bedroom on the lower level, with a huge bed and large window; and a multi-functional room between the staircases that can serve as an additional bedroom or lounge. On the lower level, you will also find the third and largest terrace with sun loungers, and parasols, as well as another outside shower. There is also a refreshing plunge pool. The terraces offer beautiful views across the rooftops and are great spaces in which to unwind after spending a day exploring the Algarve.SILVESSituated along the Arade river, Silves is one of the oldest and most historically significant cities of the Algarve. From the ancient Moorish castle and 12th-century cathedral to the great cafes and outdoor markets, the village is compact and walkable to take it all in. This is also a great spot from which to explore the coast, the countryside and the Monchique mountain from where you'll have a view from the highest point in the Algarve. It's within walking distance of several great bars and fine eateries, including Marisqueria Rui, one of the best seafood restaurants in the Algarve.Downtown, with its quaint boutiques, is 200m from the house. These are the only two factories in Portugal that still make hydraulic mosaic tiles.The living room is a cozy space that leads into the kitchen and the first of three terraces, which has beautiful views across the town. The place to spend afternoons and watch sunsets, this terrace has a lounge sofa, as well as an outside shower and an outdoor 'kitchen'.  There is an additional double bedroom on the lower level, with a huge bed and large window; and a multi-functional room between the staircases that can serve as an additional bedroom or lounge. On the lower level, you will also find the third and largest terrace with sun loungers, and parasols, as well as another outside shower. There is also a refreshing plunge pool. The terraces offer beautiful views across the rooftops and are great spaces in which to unwind after spending a day exploring the Algarve.SILVESSituated along the Arade river, Silves is one of the oldest and most historically significant cities of the Algarve. From the ancient Moorish castle and 12th-century cathedral to the great cafes and outdoor markets, the village is compact and walkable to take it all in. This is also a great spot from which to explore the coast, the countryside and the Monchique mountain from where you'll have a view from the highest point in the Algarve. It's within walking distance of several great bars and fine eateries, including Marisqueria Rui, one of the best seafood restaurants in the Algarve.Downtown, with its quaint boutiques, is 200m from the house.
