A 16th-Century Chateau through the Ages

Like something straight out of a fairytale, this regal villa for rent in France is a beautifully restored Renaissance-era castle, evoking a palpable sense of history, nobility, and grandeur. Its journey through time has seen half a millennium of change, with a lasting legacy that continues to endure in the modern age.

Dating back to the early 16th century, the chateau was built by the Montpezat family, lords of Tajan, on the banks of the Garonne river. Celebrated architect Ruprich Robert was later hired to modernize the building, turning it into a shining example of Gothic Revival.

Through the centuries, the property changed hands several times before falling into disrepair and was subsequently acquired by the father of the present owner in the early 1990s. Following extensive renovations and conservation efforts, today it is part of an ongoing legacy that the current owners intend to last for generations to come.

The building's five main living spaces include the historical guard's room, the red living room, the yellow dining room and office, and the modern games room under the rooftop created by the current owner.

A rambling affair, the chateau has been decorated over time with found items from antique shops and auctions blended in with classic furnishings and decor in a mix of influences reflecting the owner's eclectic tastes. Both modern and contemporary art are juxtaposed in harmony with old master paintings and the gilded beauty of the Renaissance.

Of the seven suites, the Royal on the first floor offers beautiful views of the park, the farmhouse, and the woods. The Ancestors Suite located in the main tower faces south offering lovely views of the park and the woods and is decorated with portraits of past generations.

The Bishop's Suite named after a bishop with close ties to the family (who stopped off on his way to Lourdes) is an extraordinary room with unusual dimensions and overlooks the Garonne river, while the Umbrian Suite in the main tower is named after a unique 17th-century table from Northern Italy and faces southeast with beautiful views of the park, the farmhouse, and woods.

The Cathedral Suite's soaring ceilings and magnificent roof structure offer superb views of the river and the village and have been offset with contemporary art and vintage pieces from the 50s and 60s.

Located on the top floor of the castle, the bright and airy Billiard Suite offers magnificent views of the entire property with the Pyrénées in the background.

Gabriella's Suite, Virginia's Room, and Noa's Room are located in the adjacent farmhouse with views of the park, the castle, and the woods.

The peaceful pool area is nestled within a spectacular natural setting built on a plot surrounded by ancient stone walls with the historical greenhouse which has been converted into the poolhouse. Designed for escape as well as play, there is an archery set, Petanque and croquet courts, table tennis, and a trampoline to keep everyone entertained with some low-tech fun.

Surrounded in orchards that fruit from June until October, the massive property of over 40 hectares of woodlands, borders the river with spectacular views of the nearby Pyrénées mountains. You can wander the trails through the forest of oaks, pines, sycamores, and ash trees right from the property in a hushed and privileged spot that will leave a magical and lasting impression with its history, artistry, and style.
