What we like about this property

This charming cottage inhabits a stunningly beautiful and remote location well off the beaten track. We like the simple laid back living style and the lush and private property where you can pluck your breakfast right from the tree!

Description

Located at Praia do Cassange along the Peninsula de Maraú, this charming cottage is nestled into a quiet and remote setting overlooking beautiful gardens, coconut trees, and miles of pristine beaches. Backed by rare Atlantic tropial forests and lakes, there are over twelve acres of completely private and secluded tropical forests that envelope you. Built on a hillside overlooking the ocean, you are just a short stroll to the beach, the nearby tide pools and miles of jungle trails.

All of the rooms inhabit the upper floor with high vaulted ceilings and bright and airy interiors that are homey and casual with great handcrafted details. The large kitchen and eat in dining area can serve up to six inside or out on the terrace under the trees.

There are two large bedrooms that can accommodate up to four guests and one shared bath.

The grounds are your own private oasis where you can lounge in the hammocks or venture across to the largely deserted expanse of pristine beach.

Lush and peaceful, this is an unbeatable spot to enjoy the tranquil beauty of the Bahian coast.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Housekeeper every three days with optional laundry services at extra cost, on site caretaker and optional private cook and grocery stocking services available. No smart phone service, only Internet WiFi – skype, WhatsApp, TV/audio and security systems. Optional transfers from Ilhéus available.

AROUND

Known for it’s pristine beaches, tropical forests and mangrove lagoons, the district of Marau sits along the south eastern coast of Bahia State. The ocean front peninsula stretches for miles from the town of Marau and on to Barra Grande at the furthest point. Just 20 minutes away, the former fishing village of Barra Grande is now a small resort destination and has largely remained preserved in time with miles of beaches and simple surroundings. Local bars and restaurants offer fresh caught and sourced seafood and laid back entertainment. The smaller villages of Saquaíra, Taipus de Fora (with one of the finest beaches in the area)and Algodões are near to the protected nature preserve and islands of Camamu Bay. You can rent a boat or recreational vehicle to enjoy Camamu Bay or take off to many of the other distant beaches dotted along the vast peninsula to enjoy the best surfing, snorkeling and beachcombing.

We stayed at Susie’s place for 10 days in early January, and our experience could not be better. Her house is perfect, being functional and cozy at the same time. It has lovely architecture, beautiful furniture, and has all those little elements that make it special: the mosquito nets in every door and window, the practical wardrobes in both rooms, the fully equipped kitchen, the two external areas, one with a beautiful internal garden where she grows some vegetables we used in our cooking. The property is big, the house positioned in the upper part, a bit distant from the beach but the pathway to the beach is through a fantastic garden of dry-tropical trees and bushes. The sea in front of the property is a bit rough, but the beach is always empty, and this is fantastic considering we were there at the peak of the season. The location of the property in Maraú is very good, a short drive (a car is a must, regardless of where you stay in the peninsula) from the best beaches of Taipus de Fora and Algodões, in the east side, and the nice little village of Taipus de Dentro where you can eat great local fish and seafood. There is a local staff also, super kind people who were absolutely helpful when we needed, and who provided us a superb jar full of coconut water every single day. A special word now on Susie: Susie’s presence is everywhere, and it feels like we’re really in a friend’s place. Most of all, she has been wonderful from the beginning to the end. A great host, always worried with our well-being. For example: we have small kids and were worried they could fall from the single beds without the protections they usually have at home. When we told Susie about our concern, she made sure that when we arrived their mattresses were on the floor, with the beds stored in the deposit. Also: we were worried about arriving without any supplies. She simple asked us about the items we needed, and made sure a local market delivered everything at home prior to our arrival. The beer we asked for was already in the fridge, so we could toast to our arrival 5 minutes after we stepped in… We are super thankful to her for all the help, for having the opportunity to spend those wonderful days at a place our kids ended up calling “nossa casa da Bahia” – “our home in Bahia”. It’s not every day when you go to an Airbnb house and end up feeling at home.

Places that enchant me: the house where we stayed in Bahia (oh, we’re leaving already, what a pity!) I found the house on the Internet, and, curiously enough, I discovered that it was a sister of a friend. If you like simple and sophisticated places, cozy, practical, beautiful, with an exuberant nature and a wonderful energy, the tip is: Susie’s house on Cassange beach in Maraú. Between coconut palms and a tropical garden, just a few meters from the beach, with a spectacular balcony (see photos below), it’s a blessing. Wants to know? Bahia has now definitely entered my heart. And I think you will not go out any more …

A very nice house, perfect for a relaxing vacation in Bahia.  It is in front of a deserted beach not far from Taipus de Fora and its beautiful coral reefs.  The house has two bedrooms and a bathroom, a living room, an American style kitchen and two balconies, one with an ocean view, the other with a garden view, plus a large dining table and a playground for the children.   Elegantly furnished with everything you need, it has a well-equipped kitchen and a perfectionist staff to help provide total relaxation.   The garden of the property is beautiful!   Do not miss the trail through the giant bromeliads.  The owners are very attentive, making our stay unforgettable!

Susie is such a warm and wonderful host! It was a pleasure to spend 2 weeks at her beautiful Chalet in Maraú. We practically had a private beach all for ourselves in a most laid back, amazingly beautiful natural environment. The chalet is very well decorate (pictures are very accurate), the staff who takes care of the property are the nicest most attentive people and it is easy to spend 2 weeks there in a blink of an eye. Tip: you may want to rent a 4×4 car as all roads at Maraú Peninsula are dirty roads and that makes rides around much more comfortable. Be ready for an adventure!

We arrived at your house just now- BEAUTIFUL!

    12 December 2015
I’m writing, sitting on the porch, watching and listening to the beautiful blue sea of Bahia. I do not have enough adjectives to describe this paradise!
I imagine the investment on all levels to achieve the result!  It’s professional thing …but with a lot of love.

    12 December, 2015
Now we are under the Mango tree and very happy after a wonderful lobster lunch at Restaurant São Jorge!

    13 December, 2015
Sushi dinner yesterday was calm, and only Philip and Nanda ate.   We are following your suggestions to see the beaches, for eat and drink and by night time there’s no time for anything more.. Today was our Sunday of rest !!  We spent the day at the nearby Beach Club- at the beach, barbecue, caipiroscas, we played king !! And now we’re going to have pizza here. Yesterday we went on a very good boat ride to the waterfall and lobster at São Jorge Restaurant and took in the sunset  Ro’s Bar.

    15 December 2015
Thank you so much for this week in paradise that you made here, including your employees, both Tuta and Eliene, lovely people!

    19 December 2015
I loved the place, the house, the garden, the trip. All the best! Thank you, everyone loved it!!!

  • Ana Claudia and Bilo, January 24, 2015

    Dear Susie,
Our bags are packed, ready to return home.   The alarm set for 5:45 am.
We just would like to say what a truly unforgettable time of relaxation and fun we have had here.
Marvelous, really unbelievable. There were so many different things to do each day, activities – always different.  For all of us – and it’s been especially good for the children.
Your chalet is so charming!  We found nothing lacking.  Every item and every corner was special, truly beautiful.
The contact with such an exuberant natural environment – in a context of pure simplicity -, caused us to reflect how much time and energy we waste chasing luxury.   The simplicity and practicality of what is already within our grasp is more than enough.   Besides, it’s true:   the best things in life ARE free.
To drink fresh coconut water every day from the coconut palms right in front of us, fish dinners, gourmet Bahian seafood of all kinds, and then to dive in the water right in front – or simply admire the landscaping there from the verandah-  the feeling is indescribable.
The children had a great time accompanying your caretaker Tuta on his rounds.   Planting, watering, riding in the pickup truck bed, playing with the puppies, swimming in the fresh water lake, watching the sunset afloat in a native kayak, and so many other marvelous experiences….   I don’t have the words.   Your loyal staff was attentive and treated us exceptionally well in all respects.
We would like to thank you for everything, and state how much we admire your effort and triumph in creating a paradise that is at once so heartwarming, charming and amazing.
The days we must wait to be able to return are, for now, all that is lacking from an experience we treasure.
Until the next time, thank you!!!!
