From the bold and beautiful modern design to the magical gardens and spectacular views, we love this expansive and modern holiday letting in Cornwall. Rising from the ruins of the local quarry, the home’s dramatic silhouette and warm elemental design is modern and inviting.
Situated along the Camel River estuary just outside of the charming fishing port of Padstow, this luxury holiday letting lies at the doorstep of the famous Camel Trail cycle path along the far west shores of Cornwall. Overlooking the windswept landscape and waterways with the town in the distance, the house was once the site of the old Quarry Manager’s house that burned down.
Rebuilt and designed by architect Fiona McClean in 2009, the owner’s vision was to create a distinctively modern home that complemented the landscape’s unique topography and moulded into its setting. A simple and straighforward silhouette, the lines were inspired by old mine buildings, with a strong purity of form and elemental modern style. Constructed of slate from the quarry, oak wood, concrete and glass, it’s crowning box-like open plan top floor offers vast, uninterrupted panoramic views and is flooded with natural light from walls of glass. Encompassing a fireside living area with the fully equipped kitchen and dining for twelve, this is the convivial heart of the house and leads to a large terrace with a BBQ and dining for up to twenty.
Minimalist and uncluttered, the interiors are understated but beautifully detailed with comfortable oversized funishings and finishes and modest decor with key pieces such a Tom Dixon candelabra and a Sophie Ryder sculpture.
Downstairs there is room for up to sixteen guests in six en suite rooms.
Designed by Mary Reynolds (who won the coveted Gold Medal for her ‘Celtic garden’ at the Chelsea Flower Show), the imaginative and magical gardens were meant to complement the house through use of slate and unique shapes and patterns. Look out for the Myburgh designed swinging pumpkin seat and the Sophie Ryder sculptures with a fire-pit that everyone can gather round in the evenings.
A welcome basket full of Cornish delights. Daily housekeeping with optional additional cleaning service available. Optional chef, masseuse or personal trainer services subject to availability. Wifi throughout, multimedia room with surround sound and huge LCD screen TV with DVD player, stereo audio system with iPod docking and a selection of books, games and DVDs. Home gym with a Nautilus running and rowing machines and a punching bag.
The wild and rugged Cornish peninsula features stunning coastline and windswept moorlands leading to the famous far south west promontory of Land’s End. Bordered with some of the areas best beaches, this region of North Cornwall offers exquisite natural beauty just outside of the charming fishing port town of Padstow. Located at the head of the Camel River, it’s a well known foodie destination with great restaurants and shops as well as the start and end point for the amazing Camel Cycle Trail. The South West Coast Path is the place to stroll for miles and the legend of King Arthur lives on at nearby Tintagel Castle, a magical medieval ruin perhed high above the sea. The long white Padstow beach stretches from the town of Padstow to Hawkers Cove while nearby Daymer Bay features dunes and rock pools and Polzeath is a surfers’ paradise. Both Harlyn Bay and Booby’s Bay are great for surfing and families alike, while Constance Bay is best left to the pros. The delightful village of Port Isaac is worth a visit and Plymouth is an hour east.
