What we like about this property

It takes a little effort to get here but it’s worth it! This cozy little cottage is built for two with great views in a peaceful country setting. Snuggle in and if you’re timing is right, stay for the wine harvest in August!

Description

This early 20th century cottage is all rustic and antique charm nestled into lush gardens overlooking the Aegean and vineyards below. Designed after the traditional Bodrum cottages found throughout the area, the home has been recently renovated but retains it’s ancient character and authentic Turkish construction. With it’s twenty inch thick stone walls and timbered ceilings, the structure is full of character and simple rustic style.

Set up similar to a guest studio, the main living area is equipped with an antique bed and is ideal for one or two guests. The room is outfitted with a cozy wood burning stove, and traditional Turkish art and antiques. The small kitchenette is perfect for quick easy meals to enjoy out on the expansive terrace where you’ll enjoy faraway views, secluded gardens and a large veranda and private pool fed by a fresh water well. The shady oak groves and leafy vineyards are peaceful and serene and the seasonal grape and vegetable harvest are able to be enjoyed by guests. A quick three minute walk up a country road and you’re there!

If you need more space in Bodrum, check out Halicarnassus Suites or Halicarnassus House.

The picturesque village of Gumusluk is within a short drive as are the mountains in Labranda near Milas, where you’ll encounter the massive ancient stone structures. Yalikavak Marina is to the west, Samos Island in Greece is 45km north and Gundogan lies to the east.

    “Tranquility”
Judging by the number of people that come to this part of the world to buy or stay “cheek to jowl” in new condos, the Halicarnassus Guest Cottage isn’t everyone’s “bag”. But our only disappointment was the days we didn’t manage to reach the terrace in time for sunset – sublime! Be aware it is a dirt track from the road entrance / where you park your car (three minutes walk). I’m glad I rented the car Frank recommended and, in my opinion, the only reason you wouldn’t rent a car here is that you didn’t drive – so much to see and, by foot, you are quite isolated. So, with a car, you have the best of both worlds. And thanks to Frank’s two dogs – one or both would invariably walk down with us whenever we arrived “home”, sit on the terrace a while and then leave us to our privacy.

  • Susan B., November 10, 2010

We had a wonderful stay at the Halicarnassus Guest Cottage for a week in mid-October. Frank, and all those who have created this Bodrum retreat, are gracious hosts and willing to offer all kinds of advice for things to do on the Peninsula. The setting is unique, and you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else so secluded and with such lovely views in this region. Even in some dramatic weather for October—high winds and some rain—it was a delightful place to be. The cottage is small and simple, and might not suit those seeking lots of indoor space, but for a couple it was perfect, especially for dinner on the terrace and evenings under the stars. The climb down through the olive trees is charming (bring good shoes and strong legs.) The village of Gumusluk, not far away, was particularly appealing. We also enjoyed walking down the hill from the house to the local village. And the Yalikavak market on Thursday is huge and well worth visiting.

We stayed 12 nights at the Halicarnassus Guest Cottage in Sept. 2010 and it was all we had hoped for – simple living at it´s best! This is a place to de-stress and enjoy nature again in a tranquil setting – no direct neighbours and little noise from the road in the valley below. The cottage is set among olive and oak trees with beautiful views from the terrace. The owner Frank and his staff were delightful – full of helpful information and suggestions, always pleased to be of assistance. Yalikavak is an excellent place to set out from on various short trips to the local villages or to Bodrum. We also drove up into the mountains to see Labranda near Milas, arriving in the late afternoon totally in awe of the sight to be seen – massive ancient stone constructions of unbelievable dimension. The round trip including a picnic up in the forest took about half a day. Sunset dinner or mezes at Limon Cafe another delight and fish galore to be had at many restaurants around Yalikavak. Shopping for local fresh produce was fun at the market and the supermarkets were well stocked. We strongly recommend hiring a car for this location – the owner kindly organised the car hire locally and we were met by someone from the hire company at the airport and driven to the cottage – a brillant arrangement! At the end of our stay we drove to the airport and handed back the car there. We came home feeling relaxed and rejuvenated – we hope to stay at the Halicarnassus Guest Cottage again in the not too distant future!

Halicarnassus Guest Cottage was the idyllic retreat we had hoped for and everything the listing promised. Happy days were spent on the veranda with its view over the vineyard and the hills towards the sea and cooling off in the plunge pool which was beautifully clean. We rented a car but apart from needing to buy supplies this was virtually unnecessary as we were reluctant to leave our safe haven even for a moment. The owner Frank who lives up the hill through olive groves and fig trees was the perfect host. Highly recommended.
