What we like about this property

This vacation home rental in Amsterdam is truly unexpected. For starters, it’s unlike any houseboat we’ve ever come across. A former passenger vessel, it’s actually made up of two apartments – one lived in by the owners, and the other available for rent. So, technically, it’s an apartment-boat. Moored in the Eastern Docklands on KNSM Island, it offers the best of two worlds – a quiet local experience plus easy access to the city center. It also has bright and colorful interiors, full of cool, eclectic objects – giving it a very homey vibe.

Description

Want a completely unique experience? Check out this cool vacation home rental in Amsterdam. Located in the city’s docklands, it’s a former passenger ship that’s been given a great makeover by the interior design team at KoelhuisFRIGO.

The vessel has been divided into two sections, with the owners located up front and available for any help guests might need. The rear of the boat is completely separate, offering a cosy space for 2-4 guests. The design is open, with a double-bedroom space, as well as a day bed that can be either a single or double. The galley is fully-equipped, and there’s also a large bathroom with tub (taking a bath on a boat has to be experienced!).

We love the objects around the space – the string painting of Vermeer’s ‘The Girl with the Pearl Earring’ above the day bed offers a cheeky homage to the Dutch Golden Age of painting. The quirky flight trolley in the kitchen. The little white wired Rhino, Dumbo and Bambi on the wall. Found objects, old and new, as well as browsable books on architecture, Amsterdam and the docklands, CDs and board games. An outdoor stern deck terrace with a little wood-burning stove that doubles as a barbecue. And all the little port-holes – what ship would be complete without them?

Add to all that the fact that the owners suggest exploring the docklands by stand-up paddleboard, or diving off the side of the boat into the water. There’s also a 1910 tug boat that’s available for tours (at extra cost).

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

There’s cable TV and a stereo, concrete flooring with underfloor heating, as well as a Nespresso machine, dishwasher, coffee, tea, olive oil, herbs, and a washing machine in the kitchen. A hair dryer and shampoo are provided. Life vests are available.

AROUND

The Eastern Docklands were built for the enormous ships that travelled to the Dutch East Indies, so this is one of Amsterdam’s most spacious locations. Converted in recent years into a residential area, it makes for a fun place to stay. There’s a café close by in both directions on the south facing quay, as well as a bakery, restaurants, interior design shops, bookshops, supermarkets and a park.

The boat is also located close to the city center. Public transport is available within 100m of the ship. Tram 10 will take you to Leidseplein in 15 minutes, bus 48 will take you to Central Station in 10 minutes. If you want to go local, there are also plenty of places to rent bikes.

From the very beginning, Ingeborg was friendly and helpful, quick with communication and to answer questions for us, as this was our first time visiting Amsterdam. Ingeborg was incredibly welcoming when we arrived and ensured she was there to meet us. She had maps and helpful guides that she showed us to allow us a head start in our adventure. The accommodations are excellent- this is a true and authentic Amsterdam stay, a unique opportunity for us visitors wanting to be immersed in the culture and have a relaxing holiday as well as memorable experience to last a lifetime. We got engaged on the boat! It was the most special place to call our own for the week and to enjoy all that Amsterdam and the surrounding area have to offer, as well as each other and celebrate! Around the corner from the boat is the tram and bus line that will take you into the many neighborhoods and areas of Amsterdam that are of interest like the Rijksmuseum and Vondelpark, De Pijp, Central if you need. An easy walk from the houseboat across the water will bring you to a shopping area with all the necessities like two groceries, ATMs, bike rental, bakery, spirits stores. Just around the corner from the boat is are two great local restaurants/bars for easy local celebrating and hanging out. We took advantage of the fire place outside and made a lovely time of hanging out on the back porch, having some wine and enjoying the laid back beauty of boat life. The location was perfect! Make sure to take a swim if the weather is good! Another plus was the huge collection of music that Ingeborg has available- we loved paying some old hits and lounging in the evenings after a long day of sightseeing. The kitchen was very convenient and perfect to fit our needs- easy breakfast and espresso in the am before heading out and starting our day. The bathroom was very spacious-surprrising for a boat and the tub was lovely for a nice soak. I could not imagine a better way to celebrate our special time than staying on this incredibly beautiful and special houseboat! Ingeborg was the sweetest and brought us a darling card and bottle of sparkling wine to celebrate us, and we are ever thankful of her generosity and assistance in making this trip so magical and memorable. We really enjoyed talking with her and it was very clear to us that she cares very much for people and wants to ensure that they have a great holiday. She put a lot of love into this ship, demonstrated by the beautifully appointed decorations and design. I just cannot say enough about how much we loved staying aboard with her! If you are planning a trip, especially a special trip as ours was like an engagement or honeymoon, be sure to book with Ingeborg. You have found the most ideal place to stay and you will love it!

A refreshing change to a hotel stay. Very welcoming and friendly hosts with local knowledge and advice if requested. The ship is cleverly designed, spacious and full of interest. A lovely place to wake up. It is only minutes from the vibrance of Amsterdam Central yet feels very local and laid back in comparison. We liked it so much we are going again.

No trip to Amsterdam is complete without quality time on a boat. We stayed aboard the cleverly and colorfully designed Hip Houseboat, enjoying the riverboat’s charm and history, as well as its proximity to public transport, shops and restaurants. The hostess, Ingeborg, was a hit with the kids and made us feel right at home, with everything from readily available coffee, water bottles, comfy bedding and curated tourist guides to great conversation and tips on how to enjoy our stay. No fears for safety — the decks are wide with easy-to-navigate steps. And it was lovely being gently rocked to sleep each night. We’ll always remember a wonderful stay, and for any future trips to Amsterdam, this will be our first port of call.
