What we like about this property

This villa for rent in Tuscany was rescued from ruin and carefully restored by a noted preservationist, transforming hundreds of years of history into a resort-like holiday home. Surrounded by the historic and natural beauty of the region with gorgeous views from every room, this is an immersive and atmospheric Tuscan escape.

Description

Dating back over five hundred years, this villa for rent in Tuscany is located in the hills above Massarosa close to the seaside resort of Viareggio. A former peasant’s farmhouse, the property had been abandoned for many years and was in a state of ruin with nothing but the original stone walls still standing. The house was likely built in stages hundreds of years apart with current restorations beginning in 1995.

Noted Tuscan preservationist and architect Stefano Lazzarini was enlisted for the task and worked closely with local stonemasons and artisans, using as much of the original material as possible, including original bricks and roof tiles.

Laid out over three stories, the oldest part of the house is the present-day living room and dining room, (where the animals were once housed) with a small cantina and a very large, fully-equipped semi-professional kitchen. The second floor, contains a bedroom suite that includes an office area (with a kitchenette,) and a den/studio with hide-a-bed and a library. The second master bedroom suite has a sitting area with every window affording outstanding views of the sea, Lake Massacioucculi, the 11th century village church and the surrounding countryside.

The third master bedroom suite encompasses the entire third floor and is equipped with a sitting room and fireplace, and a full bath. This room offers the most spectacular views, overlooking the Mediterranean, the lake and the entire countryside.

Furnished with period antiques from the area, each suite has its own private terrace with stunning views.

There is also an additional one bedroom cottage on the property that sleeps two.

The extended covered portico in the front of the house has ample space for lounging and dining al fresco, while the pool area is the perfect place to have a barbecue or dine in the shade under the wisteria covered pergola.

The property’s five hundred year old olive trees are harvested every year and bottled into the proprietors private label olive oil.

Surrounded by rambling gardens and stunning landscapes, this is a tranquil place of natural and historic beauty.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Optional housekeeping, cook and grocery stocking services available. Wifi throughout, satellite TV, laundry facilities.

AROUND

Close to Lucca in the northern reaches of Tuscany, the small village of Pieve A Elici is the perfect base from which to explore the region. The house overlooks Viareggio, Tuscany’s largest seaside resort as well as the evocative Lake Massaciuccoli, the picturesque town of Massarosa, and the surrounding foothills which lead north to the vast marble caves of Cararra. The charming seaside town of Forte dei Marmi with it’s beautiful beaches is within a half hour and the medieval walled city of Lucca is within twenty minutes. The leaning tower of Pisa can be seen from the house and is just thirty minutes drive. The town is also conveniently located for day trips to Florence, Pisa, the Cinque Terre, Portofino, Santa Margherita, Siena, Volterra, San Gimignano, Montalcino, Montepulciano and Pienza and the lesser-known but equally beautiful Ligurian seaside villages north of Tuscany.

Close by are excellent local markets and historic trails that lead you through nature paths and hillside villages.

Italy has a way of getting under your skin: the sights, the smells, the tastes. We traveled all over, but Casa Incantevole anchored in a way that no other stop did. When you’re there, everything else melts away. You’re surrounded by beauty on all sides. The decor is perfect, elegant yet homey. The kitchen is appointed better than most in Orange County, California, and that’s saying a lot! The flowers, the pizza oven, the library, the terrazzos … the pool! And then there’s the view. It’s spectacular from every angle. As you ascend the three-story home and check out the vistas from each room, you think, it can’t get any better. And then it does. Is it the wine you bought for $6 at the local market? No, it’s really that stunning.

The location is great. We rented a car and bopped all over Tuscany. The proprietors left us incredible suggestions, down to how to tweak an amazing local dessert and make it better to the best gelato in Italy (it’s nearby in Via Reggio). I only wish we had tried every suggestion, but that’s what next time is for, right? Because Casa Incantevole calls to us, like a dream. No, it’s like that sweet, tender moment after waking from the perfect dream, before realizing you’re awake. Was it all a dream? We’ll have to return to see.

Villa Incantevole and the quiet beauty of every waking hour there set the stage for making wonderful memories that we always share. Living among the old olive groves, looking out over the lakes below while the changing light moves across the land, led to such deep relaxation it was often hard to get going for an outing down the hill. Half of our ten day stay deserved no agenda, so we would watch the sky for a spring rainfall, nap, sip wine, toast some local breads, eat local olives and cheese, read a bit, then be delighted at sundown when the fireflies came out to flit among the trees. We could not imagine being anywhere else. Some days, anywhere else did not even exist. Our goal at this lovely home was to reconnect to the hours in a day, the minutes in an hour, and to each other, in a way that was unscheduled, carefree, and comfortable in our own rhythm.

Thank you Ted and Candy for creating a special hillside hideaway with your love of Italy, your appreciation of simplified elegance, comfort and charm, where we could live ten enchanted days without a care in the world.

La Famiglia Duffy has enjoyed Villa Incantevole for more than two decades. We consider it home, and Ted and Candy (the owners) family.

    The high points—

Sunday evening concerts at Pieve a Elici—world class performances literally steps away.

Short hop to “ Bagno Carla” on the beach at Viareggio, Lucca and all its history and culture, close to Firenze, Cinqe Terre, Forte dei Marmi.

Truly wonderful dining in every direction,

Spectacular views of the Lake and sunsets,

    Superbly maintained home and grounds—

We would stay two to four weeks—long enough to hide the suitcases, and get to know many of the locals—all of whom know Ted and Candy—“Saluti da Ted…” will open any door.

It’s a magical place, and a chance to relax into the local pace of life.

    We have loved every second—

This is one of those villas you want to take home. Location, views, activities, food in the neighborhood family run restaurants
     is to die for.
My wife  and I spent a week and we felt it was not enough. Wish we had a month to stay out there.

Can’t wait till we get back for another stay. Bedrooms are so comfortable and all the Amenities work so perfectly, it’s more than a Home away from home.

We visited Villa Incantevole–a beautifully renovated and expanded 500-year old Tuscan farmhouse 3 times–in March, July and Sept.

From each of the villa’s windows and terrazzos a view well worth looking at awaits. The villa’s own olive grove and pool area look spectacular. In the distance, the Mediterranean Sea and the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa are visible.

Being immersed in the Pieve a Elici community, away from the hectic touristy spots, was absolutely wonderful. After a day of sightseeing, it was delightful to sip local vino on the garden terrace, under the pergola, enjoying the peace and serenity of Villa Incantevole. We loved spending the day relaxing and swimming in the pool. When we didn’t feel like driving, we walked 2 minutes down the lane to the nearby Romanesque church and the local frantoio, where olives are pressed into oil.

The nearby hill towns are fascinating, each having a different day of the week for their public market. Foodies like me will love the fresh, local food selections. We brought home our market ‘finds’ & prepared them using the villa’s large, well-equipped kitchen. What a treat to use the villa’s Bertazzoni, the ‘Rolls Royce’ of Italian stoves.

Villa Incantevole is a convenient base for heading to Lucca, where you can walk the historic walls & browse the specialty shops. We also drove to Portofino and hopped a boat for a day trip to the Cinque Terre. A 15 minute drive took us from the villa to Viareggio, with its golden sand beaches, art nouveau architecture & scenic boardwalk.

We would return to Villa Incantevole again in a heartbeat. Fond, fond memories.

Casa Incantevole is a truly magical place that we have been lucky enough to stay at during the summer and also the autumn. Each season brings with it something unique. In the summer the heat of the day lying on the day bed is cooled by the beautiful pool that overlooks the coast. Evenings spent outside on the terrazzo with a tasty pizza from the wood fired oven and bottles of local wine on the table provides the true Mediterranean experience. With the autumn comes the local festivals, whether truffles or chestnuts or the sound of olives being harvested from the local trees. Cosy nights in front of the wood burner chatting about the days adventures, whether to Florence with the Uffizi and Academia or exploring the Cinque Terre on the coast. This is a place that you dream of living and owning, but that you can have a slice of for a week or two!

My family and I (husband and kids aged 10,13 and 16) originally went for a week vacation.  We had such a fantastic time that my husband and I went back and rented the villa for 3 months some years later!  This property is a piece of Tuscan paradise. It is perfectly located in a charming quiet town and yet still central enough to access Florence, Lucca as well as many other wonderful Tuscan towns. The home itself is historic, beautiful, comfortable and charming!  Every room has a beautiful view of the grounds, gardens or sea.  The kitchen is wonderful and has been completely renovated and is a chefs dream!  I loved making homemade pastas and then firing up the outdoor “forno” and cooking some pizzas and then dining al fresco overlooking the pool!  Even after a 3 month stay we were sad to leave and would return again and again. Booking this property will be a gift to you and whoever is fortunate enough to join you on this amazing holiday.

We have been extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to have several holidays at Villa Incantevole. We have been there with other couples as well as with family. There are very few other places that we have ever vacationed at that offer us such diversity of day excursions, sites to see, foods to experience, and then, complete serenity and tranquillity.  We had challenging decisions to make each day – stay and relax by the pool, walk the hills nearby, cook for ourselves or have a chef come in, or make a pizza in the forno.  Should we go to Lucca, Pisa, Firenze or walk the bogs of Lago Massaciouccoli?  The Villa is luscious, warm and inviting and it is truly a wonderful “home away from home”.

The hosts and their staff ensure that every need is taken care of and they have always been available to offer us advice that has made our visits truly memorable.  Enjoy!

I am extremely picky about my selections for my upscale/luxury clients.  Three couples stayed here and it was a fabulous experience for everyone.  The location  is perfect for exploring the region.  A nice amount of quiet with towns just down the road.  Want to cook on your own, everything is there for you.  Want someone to come in and do it for you, that can be arranged as well.  Comfort, style, class, are words that come to mind when describing this home away from home.  I would not hesitate to book again or to recommend someone interested in staying for a week or more.  You won’t want to leave…..

Our family of four stayed at the beautiful Villa Incantevole for five days in the summer and didn’t want to leave.  The grounds with the olive trees and view of the sea is breathtaking.  The house is so charming, clean, and beautifully decorated.  It’s absolutely perfect for relaxing at the pool and enjoying lunch or dinners out on the patio.  We took day trips to Lucca, Florence, Pisa, the Cinque Terre and Multepulciano.  We talk about our time spent at Villa Incantevole all the time.  Wonderful memories we’ll have forever!

We were fortunate enough to hear about Villa Incantevole from good friends who had stayed there. They couldn’t stop raving until we decided to check it out ourselves. We spent ten glorious days with our family last year. It was an incredible adventure. We couldn’t have been more pleased with the villa and it’s location. We felt the history all around us as we walked through this unbelievable home. We all felt immediately comfortable. The property is maintained to perfection. The care and love shows through in all the attention to details throughout. We could have been content to sit all day gazing out to the Mediterranean Sea for our entire stay. We didn’t, however, because there is so much to see and explore. Pisa, Lucca, Cinque Terra, the beaches, opera venues and Cerrera Mines are all conveniently located to the villa. This experience left us all with memories to treasure a lifetime.

Imagine a home, Casa Incantevole, in the hills of Tuscany. You look out from your chair in the front yard under the gazebo and realize you can see the Leaning Tower in Pisa today. Off to the right you can see the Mediterranean and maybe just make out some offshore islands. Bells chime the hour from the 11th century Romanesque church San Pantaleone, just on the next hill. I know this place as my favorite in Italy and you can too.
You have the opportunity of visiting Florence, with all its art and historical treasures during the day with dinner 20 minutes away in seaside Viareggio, followed by a walk on the white powder beach at sunset. Drive 30 minutes for your choice of Lucca, with its city-circling park on top of the still-complete ancient walls, or visit Pisa in the same travel time to confirm the lean of the tower in the Piazza dei Miracoli. Many Italian experiences are a short drive away.
My family and I have had the pleasure of renting this completely modernized home three times. No matter where you travel in Tuscany, on your return the calmness of this centuries-old house will greet you and sink into your bones. Relax by the pool, cook pizza in the forno, walk by the frantoio just down the country lane, where olives are pressed to olive oil once a year, or just watch the wind blow through the on-property olive grove. When your stay is over, you will count the days until you can return.

    Casa Incantevole
This Villa is a Tuscan dream. Hidden high above the town of Massarosa, from your garden chair, you drown in the panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea thousands of feet below. We used the “Enchanted House” as our kick off point to explore Tuscany. Lucca, Barca and Cinque Terre are an easy drive away. Each morning we would wake with our coffee, position ourselves in the outdoor garden overlooking the Olive Orchard and plan our days excursion. After our daily adventure, the kids would cool off in the beautiful pool while we relaxed. For the less adventurous, there is no need to leave the Villa at all. Relax, slow down and enjoy “Il dolce far niente”. In the evening we cooked our own pizzas in the outdoor pizza oven or ventured out to test our Italian and the food in one the many restaurants a short drive away.

The house itself was extremely comfortable and impeccably renovated In true Tuscan style.

Our kids loved this place and were disappointed that we did not take them back with us on our return visit a few years later.

There is only one word to describe this home it is Bellissimo.
We had the pleasure of luxuriating in this spectacular villa twice. It sits high on a hill with sweeping vistas. Wonderful places to sit outside sipping wine and having wonderful conversations about life. We loved swimming in the pool overlooking the countryside.
We cooked many delicious meals in the large kitchen. The master suite has floor to ceiling glass that provides an amazing view over the Italian countryside. And each of the bedroom suites have style and grace.

Casa Incantevole is our family’s favorite get-together destination. Through the years, we have stayed there 4 times, typically between May-June. We love this enchanted house, with its gorgeous and peaceful views, its ancient olive orchard, its lovely ambiance and its absolute comfort in allowing our family of 7 to feel truly at home. The house proprietors always check in to make sure everything is as comfortable as possible and are extremely responsive to any questions. The house has a huge gourmet kitchen which is a wonderful feature our family of food enthusiasts greatly appreciates. Dining al-fresco on the hand-painted ceramic table in the terrazzo overlooking Lake Massaciuccoli is an experience that is hard to put into words. Our pictures of meals at that table typically bring our friends to tears and end up in an inevitable request for a referral. We have sent countless friends to experience this house for themselves and everyone comes back as enchanted as we are. The house exudes nurturing and comfort because it was built by loving, thoughtful and nurturing people. Every detail speaks of attention, deep forethought and great planning. We never want for anything when we stay at Casa Incantevole … perhaps only for more time there.

We had the privilege of renting Casa Incantevole.
The location is wonderful, giving views of the sea and Lake Massaciuccoli as well as rolling hills of olive trees. We never ran out of day trips to Pisa, Viareggio, Lucca, Florence, Cinque Terre, but the best part of the day was alway returning home to the villa.
The property is expansive, including pool and many sitting areas, all overlooking the magical view. Everything is beautifully maintained inside and out.
The villa includes a gourmet kitchen (also an outdoor pizza oven), a cozy living room and two dining areas, as well as an outdoor eating area overlooking the spectacular vista. The bedroom suites were each unique and special and had wonderful sitting areas, ensuite bathrooms and all included a private outdoor sitting area.
Though we have often traveled to Italy, this time we really felt like we lived there, in the most lovely home.
