Way back in 1880, this property was a small factory. As the years passed, it was converted into artisans’ workshops. Then in 1999, it was taken over by architect Claudio Nardi, who turned it into his design studio. A few years later, he had a vision of something completely different, and he transformed it again – into what he called “a home for guests”.
Some would call it a hotel, some would say it’s a collection of vacation rentals, but we prefer the description “rather like a small country hamlet”. Its owners also describe it as “halfway between being at home and away”. Which is exactly what we think vacation rentals should be. A mix of the familiar and the new, and a blend of social and private.
Described as French-style, the studios blend contemporary, metropolitan lines with the cosiness of historical elements like stone walls, cross vaults and fireplaces. The decor is modern antiques and Fifties furniture, with old and new materials like wood and corian, as well as elegant modern kitchens.
The entire property has ten loft spaces, and there are three Superior Deluxe Studios, sized at up to 48sqm. Each has dark wooden floors and high ceilings, and direct access too either the garden or the cosy entrance alley with its lemon tree and roses. One of the three has a mezzanine with a view across the garden.
The lofts all share a private garden with a striking white sandstone pool, hammocks and sun beds. There is a 24-hour living room with honesty bar, TV, CD/DVD player, wifi, library and fireplace.
A really cool vacation home for rent in Italy.
Each studio has a telephone (with free national calls), TV, kitchenette or kettle and facilities for tea/coffee and snacks, heating/air conditioning, hairdryer, minibar (with free soft drinks), safety box, courtesy kit, and gym items. Free vintage bicycles are available for guests.
The property is available for events.
The lofts are situated along the Arno, just opposite the historic Parco delle Cascine, which is within easy walking distance via a public garden along the banks of the river. It’s a great place for running, walking or horse riding.
The property is 2.5km from the center of Florence, which can be reached within 10 minutes by taxi or in 30 minutes by foot. The owners also offer free bicycles, which will get you there in 10 minutes. The new tramway (stop Paolo Uccello or Sansovino) is just 200m from the property. There are tennis and golf clubs close by, as well as many good restaurants.
Florence, Tuscany, Italy. Nearest airport: Florence Peretola (6 miles).
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Spring to Fall.
