What we like about this property

The owners of this renovated Italian stone village house prove that it’s possible to live stylishly without compromising on sustainability. Solar panels and a biomass boiler are balanced with luxurious fittings and quirky accessories to create a cool, comfortable and creative setting.

Description

This stunning stone village house has been completely restored over the last four years. The shell of the building had been uninhabited for over 80 years but today combines luxury with the very best in eco-technology.

The original ciappe roof, made from large, uncut slate, has been insulated, and shutters and double-glazed windows (made by the 80-year-old village joiner) help to keep the house cool in summer.

Solar panels fuel the heat storage system to provide the house with hot water, and a biomass boiler burns wood chips and olive pits to power the underfloor heating – a definite asset during the winter months. An old-fashioned Sheila Maid hangs in the vaulted ceiling of the living area, offering the ultimate eco-friendly air-drying for clothing.

The property is brought to life by up-cycled furniture and eclectic accessories. An Italian-style kitchen is complete with plenty of crockery and an abundance of accessories. Bedrooms are furnished with White Company linen and towels, and fully-stocked bookshelves complete the picture.

The owners live most of the year in the adjoining property and are available to help should they be needed.

INTERIOR

Entrance to the ground floor is via the private terrace. Here there is one double bedroom, with views across the valley. An additional bedroom has zip twin beds, which can be made up as two single beds or one king-sized double. A family bathroom has a bath with shower, sink, WC and bidet, plus a washing machine.

The first floor features a large open-plan kitchen/dining/living area with a vaulted ceiling, a CD/DVD system with iPod dock and USB port. Windows face across and down the valley.

Stairs lead to the mezzanine level, which has a double bedroom overlooking the living area and an en-suite shower room with frameless glass enclosure. Windows look across the valley.

EXTERIOR

Outside of the house is a private terrace with wood-fired pizza oven, lounge chairs, and dining table and chairs, under a vine-covered pergola.

AROUND

The property is located in Liguria, Italy, which borders on Mediterranean France. This mountainous region is perfect for mountain biking, walking or trial-biking around the Alpi Liguri National Park, as well as lounging on the Italian Riviera.

Nearby Rezzo is everything you could hope for from an Italian village, underpopulated by tourists yet truly welcoming to visitors. Between six and eight festivals take place each year, mainly over the summer months. These take the shape of dinner dances with fabulous food served in the Giardino Publico, or Babacce (the Halloween festival), a trail around the decorated village with food and drink samples along the way.

Two kilometers above the village is the incredible 15th-century Santuario di Nostra Signora del Santo Sepolcro e di Maria Bambina, built on the site of a small chapel where miracles were reputed to occur. It houses an impressive set of frescoes that have been sensitively preserved over the past few years.

Next door is Formaggio di Santuario di Rezzo, home to goat herder Barbara Saltarini, who champions the slow food movement. She owns over 200 goats, a dairy, a shop and a thriving agriturismo restaurant, a 15-minute walk from the house. As well as the local brusso cheese, Barbara makes and sells all types of goat’s cheese and other foods.

Rezzo offers great trails for cycling, and it is possible to ascend over 1000m from Rezzo to the Alpi Liguri in only a couple of kilometers. A gentler alternative is the coastal cycle path along the old railway line.

The region has many great restaurants. The village itself has two small shops/bars and a Locanda (bar/restaurant). Take a walk down the river and you’ll reach Lavina – home of Lavinella, a family-run restaurant with a great set menu of up to 12 (small) courses including wine for 25 euros. This is a great spot for Sunday lunch.

And finally, no visit to Italy is complete without a trip to a market. There’s one on most days of the week within an hour or so by car – including the famed Ventimiglia and San Remo markets.

We had such an amazing stay and wonderful time at Stone Village House. The view of the mountains off the patio, the stars at night, the small village streets were absolutely enchanting. Our hosts were very kind and helpful, and shared lots of tips about the area. It is quiet, beautiful and as soon as we were on the road, we were already thinking of when to come back. Highly recommended!

Having traveled many other holiday rentals we were glad to find this little gem which suited our requirements. The views are breath taking and the air is clean and fresh and the setting is idyllic, the perfect getaway.
David and Emma have done a fantastic job of giving this house a new lease of life and bringing it bang up to date without loosing any of its rustic charm. The house has everything you need and the kitchen has every possible utensil. All I’d suggest is to bring some DVD’s for the kids as the TV is not connected to an aerial. The weather was a bit hit and miss for us so the 3 DVD’s we brought were well used first thing in the morning and late in the day when the children were stuck indoors. Our Children (7 and 3.5) loved the place, especially the chickens. But be aware the town is built on a hillside so little legs may get tired quickly.

We mainly frequented Ivana’s for bread, milk and eggs and she sells local cheese which is great, just like my Nonna use to make. The rest of the shopping was done down at Bennet supermarket on the way to Imperia. It also a great place to stock up on your beach picnic food stuffs, just make sure you swing buy the deli and bakery, its so cheap and the food is good quality.
Also next to Ivana’s is a path down to the river but be aware that part of the way down a rock slide blocks the path. I personally didn’t fancy crossing the loose stones with a 3 year old in tow so make your own choice but I was told there is another way down near the football pitch but we never tried it.

We only went down to Pieve di Teco to eat pizza and our personal favourite was “Dal Maniscalco” which we just though tasted better than “la Forchetta” but the latter does have menus in English where the former doesn’t.

If you want to hit the beach, Imperia is only 30 minutes drive but we went on the St Bartolomeo al Mare as this has calmer waters because of the sea walls. We did try Alassio which won the train spotters prize as the coast line runs right next to the road but the sea is rough and our youngest didn’t like it.

Great Place, Great food, Great Beaches, Great Gelato, Bella Italia. Italy is my ancestral home so I’m bias. But if you want slice of Italian life you wont go far wrong if you book Stone Village House. Dave and Emma and Tilly are lovely people warm and friendly and Emma can handle multiple quick-fire questions by small boys with ease( ish ), I’m glad we met them and wish them all the best for the future.

    “A wonderful holiday in Italy”

“A truly relaxing holiday that passed all too quickly. Walking in and around the village was wonderful, the weather, the scenery and the wildlife were all fantastic. We really felt we had a good break from the real world in the idyllic village Rezzo.
Stone Village House is such a well appointed place to stay. A very big thank you to David and Emma (and Tilly) for making such a great place to stay and for being so hospitable.”
    And Eleanor said:
“I will miss Tilly and Zephyr. I had fun and don’t want to go. I think you will like it! “

“Stunning location and an improved property. Wonderful”

We liked our first stay in Rezzo so much that we came back again, and again to Stone Villa House. While we were away, the owners David and Emma, had made some small improvements to the property. A mezzanine room, which sleeps another 2 people has been renovated, they’ve added a hifi and iPod dock and wifi (all very welcome) and they have installed a pizza oven on the terrace.

The location is still wonderful, sitting at the top of a quiet valley. The terrace offers fantastic panoramic views and is a wonderful spot at any time of the day. Rezzo is a great town for our small children, little traffic, lots of narrow pedestrian friendly streets and very friendly locals.

The owners have now built up a really good collection of restaurant recommendations, both in and around Rezzo and further afield towards the coast.

All in all, a fantastic place for a quiet family holiday. Looking forward to our next stay.

    “Excellent accommodation and spectacular location”

Beautifully restored traditional property located in this unspoilt village high in the mountains of Liguria extremely well appointed for a very comfortable stay. Wonderful and spectacular mountainside walks in all directions about which our children aged 7-12 were hugely and unusually enthusiastic. Easy (half hour drive) access to the coastline for a complete contrast and some beach time. We found people very welcoming and felt we gained insight into a very different life. We would recommend this highly for something a bit different and off the beaten tourist track for adults which will also appeal to children. Easy access to the Italian Riviera meant we could provide for everyone’s needs.
