Terracotta, wood and stone have been given a modern refresh inside this vast 12th-century Tuscan hamlet that offers a classic, Italian country retreat in the hills near Siena. The gorgeous Italian countryside is on full display here behind the spacious gated estate’s classic dry-stone enclosures. Stately cypress, ancient olive groves, fruit orchards and Tuscany’s quilted green hills stretch out around the property, once an agricultural hamlet. Paths lead through the outdoor spaces to and from the tree-lined swimming pool. Patios are located around the sizeable estate, and multiple covered terraces offer seating, lounging and alfresco dining areas.
A modern country haven to welcome a crowd or gather a family, the villa’s generous spaces have been updated by casual, breezy furnishings in crisp white upholstery and linens. The city’s streets offer an enchanting medieval atmosphere, particularly in the pedestrian district with its unmissable cathedral. Siena’s annual Palio horse race is the heady stuff of local legends and ancient rivalries, and has to be experienced at least once.
The smaller nearby villages of Volterra and San Gimignano are settings lost in time—places of crenellated ancient towers, domed churches, and dominant belfries, in addition to local cafes, trattorias and restaurants. Florence needs little introduction. The art-packed river city is famed for its Porto Vecchio, palatial architecture and Renaissance collections at the Ufizzi and Academia galleries and Pitti Palace. Also nearby are the cultural capitals of Pisa and Lucca.
