What we like about this property

This residence inhabits an extraordinary spot overlooking the protected Ispica valley and the necropolis of Calicantone. Cut and created from the very same stone used to build the Bronze Age archeological site, the house is a dramatic reminder of the historic importance of the area.

Description

Located within the protected site of Cava d’Ispica, and just outside of the Val di Noto and the baroque cities of Modica, Ragusa, Noto and Scicli, this house inhabits a commanding and dramatic spot on a precipice overlooking the canyon.

A fascinating and culturally important site, the house was originally built in 1954 to provide a residence for local displaced sharecroppers who were still living in the caverns of the Castello of Cava d’Ispica in the valley below. Carefully renovated using natural local materials and traditional building techniques, the house now includes seven comfortable en suite rooms, each with private entrances, five of which are on the ground floor, and two on the lower floor. The lounge area and the dining room are also on the lower floor and connect to the fully equipped kitchen which serves delicious local delicacies daily.

Designed with the simple pleasures and cultural aspects of Sicilian life in mind, the house features both rural and contemporary personality and design with warm, welcoming  hospitality.

The grounds blend into the wild landscape and feature an expansive lawned garden and solarium area around the large pool with sunbeds and garden loungers where you can relax under the olive trees or the gazebo and enjoy the extraordinary view of history.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Complimentary daily breakfast. Wifi throughout, satellite cable TV, minibar, housekeeping, laundry facilities. Off road parking.

AROUND

The ruins of Cava d’Ispica’s are accessible via the stairs just outside the property.  One of the most important archeological treasures in Sicily, the series of Bronze Age neolithic burial sites and former chapel, were later middle ages dwellings. Near to the staggering Baroque collection of UNESCO sister cities in the Val di Noto including Ragusa and Scicli and Modica, it’s also just a thirty minute drive to Marina di Modica, Marina di Ragusa and the Andrea Doria promenade, and some of the best beaches on the island ncluding Sampieri, Pozzallo and Donnalucata as well as the beautiful Vendicari Nature Reserve. Syracuse and Catania are just up the coast along with the famous Mt. Etna.

There is little point in repeating what others have said. It is all true -Paolo and family, the welcome, the uncluttered rooms with mini bar priced almost at supermarket level, the breakfasts, the pool an the edge of an otherworldly gorge- everything thought of with you and your comfort in mind.

Just a few anecdotes to share.

Italy had beaten England in the world cup the night we arrived. Next morning Paolo was not particularly happy – because they had not played beautiful football. It was easy to see this desire for beauty carried through each detail of our stay. We have stayed in places which strive to meet your every need. Majestic Countryside Retreat achieves something much more difficult – near perfection with discretion and apparent ease. Such success usually come with time and experience. To have Majestic Countryside Retreat to such a level so quickly indicates the seriousness of the family to make each stay special.

Paolo was tending the garden one afternoon and we did not recognize the scented shrub he was pruning. Gersomino – or Jasmine it transpired. When we arrived home a shrub planted several years ago had for the first time had burst into flower in out absence. To our delight as we opened our French doors the courtyard was filled with the scent of Gersomino and our heads with memories of the Casa.

    Thank you.

It’s so uncommon to find such amazing hosts that truly care about their guests as much as Paolo and his family. From the first welcome email with careful directions/GPS coordinates to make sure we didn’t get lost to the parting gift of a bottle of olive oil they pressed from the trees behind the house, we truly felt welcome. Hands down the best breakfast we had in our 2 weeks in Sicily, all made by the family or in the immediate area, you MUST have this breakfast! Perfect location for exploring the ‘Flintstone like’ dwellings of Cava d’Ispica and with the house sitting right on the edge of the gorge makes for some pretty breathtaking views. It’s a bit out of town so you ‘ll have to drive to get some dinner (and Modica Chocolate of course!) but they also have a few bikes you can borrow to cruise around and explore the region. Paolo pointed us to a local pizza restaurant one evening and we walked away stuffed full of amazing pizza and anti-pasta including beers for 15 Euro for the 2 of us. The whole stay was top quality and we will definitely be back, thanks Paolo!

We stayed three families and had the whole house for ourselves. We loved it. The house is beautiful. Clean and well equipped. Nice rooms and a lovely pool. The last km of the road to the house is terrible but it´s worth it. The surroundings are fantastic with the cliffs. The propriator Paolo cleans the pool every morning, waters the flowers and helps out with everything you need, including which beaches are the best, driving one of the kids to the doctor etc. The dinner he and his family made for us the last night was absolutely fabulous.
