Description

Situated in the ancient barony of Kilmaine in County Mayo north of Galway, this 13th-century castle is alive with history and authenticity. Surrounded by sixteen private acres of lush walled tree-lined pasture, this imposing tower rises up against the backdrop of picturesque countryside where on a clear day you can see for forty miles across the stone walled fields to the Partry and Maamturk Mountains. The summit of Crough Patrick and St. Patrick’s holy mountain can be viewed from the Castles battlements. Abandoned for at least two hundred and fifty years up until its restoration in 1997, the castle has stood the test of time and is now an exclusive and unusual venue for family vacations and events.

The structure’s original thick stone walls, beamed ceilings, floors and hand carved doors harken back to its origins as a home for the nobility. Once the heart of medieval life, the second floor’s great hall has a soaring vaulted ceiling and a huge stone fireplace with a large 17th century oak banquet table. The hall  can accommodate up to twenty five diners whilst the fully equipped modern kitchen is conveniently located next door with a serving hatch for easy access entertaining. An intricately designed minstrel’s gallery spans one end of the hall and contains a stereo system with CD’s which take full advantage of the incredible acoustics.

The fourth floor houses the Lord and Lady’s apartment and comprises a sitting-room, bedroom and bathroom. The ceiling was modelled on Dunsoghly castle and is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. The sitting-room is gracefully furnished with antiques and tapestries. As with many castles, there is a secret chamber or Oubliette hidden behind a book – case where valuables or prisoners were once held. The bedroom boasts a four poster bed lavishly hung with silken drapes and a free standing antique bath- tub.

The ground floor houses a large family sized room that can accommodate up to four guests. There are two beautiful French antique beds with two window recesses which were formerly, archers firing platforms now cleverly adapted as generous sized beds .There is a dedicated bathroom next door in the old guard room.

There are two en-suite bed rooms on the first floor; the larger boasting a stunning white rococo king-sized bed. The smaller, a gothic style double bed.    There is another en-suite double bedroom on the third floor situated in the former private chapel. This magnificent vacation home for rent in Ireland is more than a holiday escape, it’s a trip through time!

AROUND

Situated an hour north of Galway in Western Ireland’s County Mayo, this sparsely populated region was once the domain of the powerful De Burgo family who built the many castles and fortifications scattered throughout the area. The area abounds with natural beauty and history. The nearest town of Ballinrobe is a short drive from the castle and offers a good selection of pubs and restaurants with the picturesque village of Cong famous for the John Ford film ” The Quiet Man” and the famous Ashford Castle just a twenty minute drive west to the shores of Corrib Lake. The castle’s location makes it an ideal base to explore  Connemara  National Park and the Aran Islands which are less than an hour away. The spectacular cliffs of Moher are just under a two hour drive from the Castle.

    Enchanting
Our two day stay at Turin was magical. To dwell in a castle, rather than simply touring one,is quite a different experience. I was concerned that the thrill of being in a castle would wear off after a few hours, but it just became even more enchanting as we were immersed in medieval life.
The castle itself is so wonderfully decorated. It has modern comforts that blend into the medieval setting.
We loved the grounds as well. What a perfect place for photographing! It has a very romantic setting with a nice patio area and mowed trails for walking.
There is a grocery within a few minutes and the town of Cong is a 15-20 minute drive.
I would highly recommend a stay at Turin….
My children were begging to stay longer.

    Incredible place, steeped in history..

A group of twelve of us spent a delightful weekend at Turin Castle. We had seen the pictures and were excited at the prospect of staying in a castle before our trip – I have to say, the real thing was even better than we could have hoped!

The decor is just stunning – it is clear Marnie and Brendan have put a lot of attention into making sure it is appropriate to the castle without compromising on mod cons (the TV, for example, is tastefully hidden behind a tapestry, you wouldn’t even know it was there!). My bed was super comfy too, which is also a definite plus.

It was fascinating to learn the history of the place, and how various bits were used defensively when it was first built.

We didn’t venture out too much but there was a huge Tesco a short drive away and we also had a day trip to the Knock shrine and to the very pretty Cong. Really amazing place – so happy to have stayed here a bit.

    One for your bucket list!
We stayed as a group of 10 adults and 1 child April 2017 ( was a family weekend away to mark an occassion).
    Cannot recommend this castle enough.

First off the price per person is very reasonable when you have a group.

The grounds are maintained so spectacularly and there is the most beautiful chapel there. Also a court yard with outdoors sweating- perfect for a cool drink on a summers evening. I personally loved their little meadow. The grounds are surrounded by fields and fantastic views.

The castle was warm, clean and most welcoming on our arrival. The beds has fresh linen and were super comfy with loads of extra blankets etc if you required them.

The kitchen is VERY well equipped. We cooked up a family banquet without being short one pot pan or dish. We weren’t expecting such equipment.

The communal rooms are stunning!! Steeped in history and just a real treat for the senses. It was a complete change from your usual “weekend break”

We found ourselves ditching the idea of going anywhere for a few drinks one of the nights and sat in by the roaring log fire in the top floor sitting room. Something so magical about that room. Loads of logs in stock so you wont run out.

We asked for permission to bring a family guard dog (its essentially the couples baby) onto the grounds but would not go into the castle and this was granted.

My only word of caution would be, this is a real life castle. Be under no illusions. The layout is a REAL castle. There is one stairs going from bottom to top, its steep winding stone steps. And yes, if you drop that bottle it will bounce the whole way to the bottom. . It is not suitable for any one with reduced mobility.

Plenty of local attractions to plan trips to.

If your looking for a once in a lifetime treat or a special trip for a special occasion this won’t disappoint.

This was hands down the most amazing place I have (and most likely ever will) stay. When we arrived, we were greeted by Marnie & Brendan who gave us a tour and explained the history & workings of the castle. The castle is beautifully restored, with 5 bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms, and lavishly decorated with period-appropriate pieces: rugs, tapestries, incredibly beautiful furniture – each piece is so well thought out and considered. While being respectful of the historical “castle life”, Marnie & Brendan did a wonderful job bringing in modern comforts (lights, showers, wi fi on the first 2 floors). We enjoyed every second of our stay – from watching the sunset on the rooftop, to cooking dinner and spending time in the Great Hall with a fire going – it was a truly remarkable and unforgettable experience that we will be talking about for years to come.

We stayed at Turin Castle for a family celebration – There were 11 adults and 1 Child. Brendan and Marnie greeted us and gave a wonderful tour of the Castle explaining the history and features of this unique building. The rooms were very comfortable and each had it’s own heater and electric blanket. The stoves had fires set and were ready to be lit with abundant firewood for our stay. There is Wifi available at the lower levels of the castle for those who need it but we preferred to be “unplugged” for the weekend. The kitchen is well equipped for those who want to cook for themselves. Access to the front door was via pin pad code so there wasn’t any messing around with keys which was very helpful. We really enjoyed our trip – It was a unique experience to stay in a castle!

Great welcome from Marnie and Brendan! Nothing is missing, the accommodation is very well equipped, a lot of charm and character. Be careful not to be too chilly (we stayed in Winter).

We had wonderful stay at The Turin Castle for two days. Brendan and Marnie were very accommodating and took time to meet us and tell us the history of the castle as well as the security features and other odds and ends. I would recommend this castle for anyone who is searching for an authentic castle experience.

  • Tom, September 8, 2016

The castle is fantastic! It takes you back in time with all the modern amenities. The wifi needs a boost, but when you are staying in a castle being “unplugged” is welcoming. It was the perfect accommodation for our group of ten. Great location to get away, and still be close enough to explore the western part of Ireland. A day trip to Connemara, Aran Islands, Galway are easily attainable.
