What we like about this property

A rare treasure that has remained in the same family for hundreds of years, this vacation home rental in Ireland is a trip through history. We love how the former stables have been transformed with such warmth and classic country style and the lovely heritage gardens that have been tended to by generations.

Description

Set in the former stable yards of a historic 18th century family estate, this vacation home rental in Ireland is a cleverly restored former barn that now houses a three bedroom home. Built in 1710 by Quakers, and passed down through successive generations, the property is a classic example of a grand Georgian estate, and is surrounded by over ten acres of woodlands and heritage gardens as well as an edible organic garden that supplies the property and restaurant.

Set adjacent to the villa with a large private courtyard garden, the structure’s rustic stone facade looks as it has for centuries from the outside but inside, the areas that once housed livestock have been repurposed into a genteel country residence. From the entrance hall, the living room is a bright an intimate lounge with a warming fireplace and large windows overlooking the gardens. One of three double bedrooms is hidden behind a bookcase and the large scullery kitchen and dining area were restored from the former mare’s stables. Upstairs, is the en-suite master with south facing windows and a bright and airy twin room with views of the courtyard gardens and farm. Personally decorated by the owners with a finely curated selection of antiques, rustic finishes and elegant accents, the interiors have a timeless appeal.

The terrace is a great place for dining – weather permitting – and the stunning gardens which are open to the public from February to October, are considered to be some of the finest in Ireland.

The full service restaurant and shop is set within the front gates of the estate overlooking the kitchen gardens and is designed in the style of old Scandinavian barns with a New England twist. Serving lunch and dinner, the menu is a seasonal delight of traditional Irish and international fare. There is a stream through the woodlands, meadow walks through ancient park and farm lands, with the resident cows, donkeys and friendly dogs to join you if you like.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

A welcome basket of goodies with preserves, bread, butter and organic farm eggs, homemade elderflower if in season, coffee and honesty bar with a selection of organic wines. Local guide book, Wifi throughout with cable TV. L’Occitan bath products, laundry facilities.

AROUND

Less than an hour west of Dublin, the Athy area of County Kildare is an area of rich historical interest, having originally been the The Duke of Leinster’s lands, and then in the 1650’s settled by Quakers. The local village of Ballytore was the very first Quaker settlement in Ireland or England with the original buildings still standing. It’s also home to one of the oldest pubs in Ireland that hosts excellent traditional music. The nearby village of Athy is just ten minutes from the house and is the spiritual home to bluegrass music in Ireland, hosting some of the best traditional music to be found. Thirty minutes north is Kildare. Established in 480AD it’s one of the oldest in Ireland with a historic and very walkable town center with a wide selection of pubs, cafe’s and shops. The town hosts many fairs and festivals throughout the year including Derby Week Festival, which is the highlight of the annual racing calendar at the famous Curragh Racecourse.

James and his amazing team made our stay so special and enjoyable.Their attention to detail is outstanding and that to me is what makes a great place exceptional. The Green Barn is such an experience. How great to look out and see growing in front of you what you are eating. We loved it. Our meals were spectacular. The Gardens are a credit to James and his Mum Lesley….she is an inspiration. The Stable Yard was so comfortable and cosy we really found it hard to leave. They deserve all the success they are getting. I can’t wait to go back.

Beautiful and relaxing space at a really unique and special spot in the Irish countryside. The renovated stableyard is gorgeous and the courtyard a lovely hangout while listening to the birds and bees. Access to the wonderful gardens is an extra treat, with so much diversity from Victorian walled gardens, to meadows and the kitchen garden – which we were fortunate to get a few things from James to make up a delicious salad. All round we enjoyed our stay so much. Thanks James!

I don’t even know where to start from the arrival to the departure and everything in between was exceptional!! James and his family went out of their way to make us feel like we were apart of the family with the most gorgeous garden setting to haute cuisine, I can safely say I have never!! Thank you James and family!!

We spent an amazing three days staying in the Stable Yard at Burtown. The house itself is a converted stable, with three large bedrooms and a very cool, classically-furnished sitting room. My kids particularly liked the door hidden behind a bookcase! The kitchen is big and has an Aga. Little treats, like fresh eggs and home made jams were left out for us. The setting is truly unrivalled as the stable is in the grounds of Burtown House itself, which has unbelievably amazing gardens which were exploding into colour when we were there. So everywhere you wander and walk there are little areas to enjoy, sit, chill and admire the gardener’s work. There is also a massive walled garden near the house where James grows an astonishing array of organic vegetables and salads which is a sight to see. The produce is used in the restaurant attached to the house, which serves fantastic food, which means that basically we didn’t have to cook the whole time we were here which made it a real holiday. I hope to come back again soon as the Stable Yard is a true gem of a place and we left feeling utterly relaxed and chilled out.

What a wonderful time we’ve had in the Stable House of the Burtown Property. James and Joanna were nothing short of wonderful hosts, with a fresh and hospitable nature. The walls are thick, and they were so helpful in getting us set up with an additional router for wifi. The house was stocked with lovely jams and preserves, eggs, milk, butter and wine for our consumption. A supply of wood graced each fireplace and we enjoyed the comfort of keeping a fire going. The house itself is so well decorated for comfort, from the sitting room to the cozy kitchen, to the parlor. The bedding and pillows made for a wonderful night’s sleep. The property is gorgeous and we deeply enjoyed wandering the gardens at our leisure. Our favorite parts: the ease of having a wonderful farm to fork restaurant just a jaunt away, and the dutch doors, allowing us to soak up the sunshine or grey rainy days, in a lovely natural fashion. Don’t miss out on reading up on the history of James’ family, the property, and his photography books – they make the stay so friendly and sweet.

A beautiful home that was lovely to spend some time in, lots of room whilst rooms were also cosy, warm and welcoming. Would recommend to anyone for a quiet stop off break while traveling around the area or just a weekend escape from busy life!

A really lovely place to stay if you want to get away for a relaxing weekend in an idyllic rural setting. We had a wonderfully laid back two days at The Stable Yard at Burtown House. What a pleasure to be able to wander back to the beautiful Stable Yard cottage through the stunning Burtown gardens after a delicious lunch at the Gallery Cafe! Everything in the cosy, yet elegant cottage was perfect – so much thought and imagination has gone into its design and decor, as has attention to detail. James and Joanna are perfect hosts and I cant wait to come back again in the summer when the garden is in full bloom. A great place for foodies, nature lovers and plant enthusiasts. With access to their organic kitchen garden and home produce such as preserves and apple juice, and carefully selected organic wines make this stable yard house a unique place to stay.

Burton House is one of those special places that sneaks up you with its charm. You are staying on a running farm not a pretense of one. James handed us a loaf of homemade bread when we arrived. The Aga was on in the kitchen and he lit the fire in the sitting room before he left. The gardens are charming, the dogs are adorable. The best part of our stay was dinner and lunch at the Greenbarn an organic farm to table restaurant on the premises. You will not be disappointed. We hope to return soon and this time bring some friends.
