What we like about this property

The spectacular scenery and seclusion no doubt inspired architect Tryggvi in the placement and composition of this country home. Practical yet beautiful in it’s simplicity, we love the stunning views and harmonious connection with the landscape.

Description

Set in an otherworldly landscape of stark natural beauty, this country home is designed for and well suited to it’s environment. Situated along the southernmost coast of Iceland in rugged windswept terrain, the simple horizontal architecture designed by Icelandic architect Tryggvi Tryggvason is straightforward yet stylish. Inhabiting a predominantly agricultural area, this former farm has been given new life and completely transformed into a chic rural escape.

Inspired by traditional Viking houses, the design is long and narrow, with large windows that immerse you into the spectacular scenery from every angle. Using muted tones, industrial construction and materials that withstand the elements, it’s rugged and modern. The interiors are warm and light filled with wood accents, homey furnishing and decor and a spacious comfortable layout. The fully equipped kitchen, dining and living area form one bright open plan space to share and enjoy the views.

With three bedrooms (one master bedroom and two smaller bedrooms) and one large bath, the house can sleep up to six guests comfortably.

Quiet, tranquil and set within a stunningly beautiful location, this is one of those great escapes you remember for a lifetime.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Wifi throughout, large flat screen satellite TV and DVD player. Housekeeping and laundry facilities. Outdoor grill, ample parking.

AROUND

Located in the southern most area of Iceland, 185km from Reykjavik and the famous Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, Vik is a small village of just a few hundred people and just a ten minute walk to the black sand/pebble beach of Reynisfjara, where the waves are among the biggest in Europe. There is also a spectacular view from the house of the two large glaciers, Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull and the Katla volcano. Southern Iceland offers some of the best sites in Iceland for sightseeing, mountaineering and exploring it’s natural wonders by car and on foot.

This was our favorite stay in Iceland. We loved the view, location and design of the house. The grill was nice, double shower was sweet, and the washer and dryer were great to have.

Our family of 5 loved our stay at Priest House. There was talk of ‘next time we come’ before we even left. Waking up to the view over the rocks and beach is breathtaking. The home is so well-situated with endless hiking and adventure nearby and also great restaurants in Vik. There was everything we needed for meals and relaxation at home. Thank you Magnus!

My husband, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and I had the most amazing stay at Priest House in early August. We stayed there two nights. The architecture of the house is truly unique and beautiful. We loved sitting by the windows and having the most incredible views of Reynisfjara Beach and Dyrholaey. The house has everything that you need for a perfect stay–well-equipped kitchen, linens, washer, and dryer. We had some “friends” visit on a daily basis– the neighboring sheep– which we had a good laugh about. All in all, the stay was better than we could have imagined. We would stay there again! Thank you!

Great place, beautiful view! The bed was easily the comfiest bed that we had stayed in while in Iceland. Close access to everything we needed, and lots to see in the area. Lighting the candles around the house in the evening made it peaceful and relaxing.

  • Jenny B, August 30, 2015

My group of four girl friends spent two nights at Priest House in Vik. When we arrived and saw the incredible view, we realized we could be perfectly content just soaking in the view and watching the crashing waves of the ocean! The sheep and small red roofed church nearby were a calming presence for us city dwellers. The house was clean, neat, and everything we might need was provided. I wish we could have stayed longer!

One of the biggest highlights of our week in Iceland was a super Jeep tour with Johann, the local contact for the house who runs Mountain Excursions through the nearby Volcano Hotel. By getting off the main roads, we were able to get up close with the stunning scenery of lava fields, green mountains, and glaciers that make Iceland a place I have determined I *must* return to!

Can’t say more than has already been said. The house was everything we expected and more. The views to Dyrholaey were postcard perfect and the short walk to Reynisfjara Beach (with its famous cave and puffins) made this the perfect basecamp for our 2 days exploring the southern coast.

We stayed three night at the Priest House and our family of four had a wonderful time. The location provides easy access to all the South Coast has to offer. We enjoyed amazing day trips and then would return to the comforts and incredible evening/morning views of the Priest House. Our family has used Boutique Homes in the past and we highly recommend this property, it makes for a very special stay.

The Priest House is an amazing property. The views from the house are stunning, and very inviting to stay in and drink some hot drink and look at the storm outside.
It is very well located within walking distance to the beach.

Really enjoyed our stay at the house. The location is very good with sweeping views of some of Iceland’s most impressive coastline. The owners keep the house in great shape and the lay out was very good for us. We stayed a few nights but wish we could have stayed longer.

  • This is a really nice and special house in a great location and with marvellous and ever-changing views. The house is architecturally very interesting and well laid out and is very comfortable and well equipped. We were two couples together with three teenage boys and we all very mcuh enjoyed our stay in the house. The house is also very well located as a base to visit lots of interesting places in South Iceland. We felt that it was indeed a priviledge to be able to stay there.

  • JoAnna Rodriguez, July 22, 2014

We stayed at Priest House at the start of our holiday and nothing compared for the remainder of our trip. I tried not to wish that the other homes we rented were Priest House, but I wished they were Priest House.
The views are just breathtaking, the location is spectacular (running along the black sand beaches feels like a Nike commercial), and the design of the home is gorgeous and so well thought out. Our kids were very happy that the two bedrooms had a sliding wall portion they could open and feel more connected without being in the same room.
I loved everything about this house and would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Wonderful vacation home. A short walk to Reynisfjara Halsanefshellir. We were there in the middle of winter and had no idea how unpredictable weather could be. We stayed there for 3 nights and were forced to stay behind for an extra day due to weather and road closure. The owner was kind enough to waive the extra night that we stayed due to road closure. I could not wait to come again in the summer time. This property is well equipped and spacious with great view.

  • Kirsten Leslie, March 9, 2014

Priest House is great. We stayed two nights and wished we had booked to stay longer. Beautiful views and we loved it’s relative isolation – there are only a few other houses nearby and Vik is a 5min drive away. Very peaceful; it is lovely to feel like you are in the middle of nowhere.

The house itself is lovely – spacious and modern. The only thing I would have liked that wasn’t there was a kettle.

I’d like to add to my earlier review – to say that Elin made the effort to install WIFI in the house, and set up instructions for the washing machine and dryer. THANK YOU again!!

Priest House was unanimously voted by our family as one of our best accommodation during our 2-week road trip in Iceland.

It is set in a STUNNING location – beautifully and soulfully vast and desolate, affording great walks by Reynisfjara Beach and to Dyrholaey.

The house is easy to locate, wonderfully designed and well appointed, allowing us to soak in the views and sun (or snow, depending) to our hearts’ content, or laze on the couch and keep warm.

Elin is the consummate host, giving us a sweet welcome to her house, and making sure that our feedback and queries were quickly attended to – be they before or during our stay.

I’d highly highly recommend Priest House to anyone who is looking to stay at Vik. Whilst the village is petite and quaint, there’s nothing quite like living in the midst of the elements.

Thank you Elin for letting us have a slice of your heaven in Vik. We were loathed to leave.

This is just to give a 5 start rating to go with my previously submitted review (I forgot to provide a rating).

We were very fortunate to be able to stay for one night (we wish we could have had more) at Priest House in August 2013. Upon first look from the exterior, the house did not seem that special. However, when we entered the house, we understood why it is considered a “boutique home”. The layout was long and narrow as described. What was stunning was the amazing view toward the ocean (including a spectacular sunset). Everything about the living area was top notch: clean, modern, well furnished, spacious, and with excellent equipment (meaning the kitchen and audio-video). There were many lights, some with variable controls so it was a bit confusing to find the switch for the right light! The bedrooms were unusual in that each had large sliding doors instead of hinged ones. We also greatly appreciated the location, which is not far (10 min walk or a few minutes by car) from the pebble beach which was a haven for puffins and also had amazing basalt columns including a sea cave with basalt tiling. We considered this rental as the best of the 8 places we stayed in Iceland. Our only recommendation for improvement would be to have a 2nd bathroom or at least a separate toilet. However, we noticed that in Iceland, it was often the case that 2 to 4 bedroom villas had only one bathroom. This is OK if there are only a few occupants, but if you are 5 or more, the one bathroom can be a problem.

Although we had 2 nights in Vik, the house was booked on our other night and we stayed in a place that was a complete contrast to Priest House. Luckily we stayed in the very poor standard rental first and thus Priest House was a welcome and wonderful surprise.

Our highest recommendations. Because of this experience (our first rental from boutique-homes.com) we are looking at the possibilities of renting again from boutique-homes for our future holidays.

Stayed in the house for five nights at the end of August. First, some of the highlights. The location and position of the house are amazing. The house is located at the foot of a small mountain, and prominently looks out across fields out to the ocean and rock formations. Its very peaceful. The quality of the house itself, and especially the kitchen (we cooked nearly every night), were excellent. Finally, you can easily get to some of the key nature attractions of the South/Southwest. We took an amazing hike up to the local glacier from a campground called Pakgil — you can get there in a 2wd car.
For a property that is almost in the luxury category, the only couple things below expectation were some of the furniture in the lounge part of home was very dated, and the shower/bath wasn’t very nice. Overall though I would definitely come back, and would rate this 4.5/5.

One of the most beautiful places we’ve ever stayed in. A dream combination of a wonderful location and a very stylish and comfortable home, which is designed with the breath taking views in mind. We too were very sad to leave, but vowed to return one day.Once you stay in Priest House, you will feel the same way. Outstanding.

We left Priest House with sadness in our hearts. What a special and beautiful place! The house is well thought, the windows are perfectly positionned and the region is rich and welcoming.
