Just offshore is the small island of Paleosouda, which can be reached only by boat or a short swim. A charming uninhabited wooded isle, its steep western coast is a popular diving spot. The road north leads to some interesting Roman ruins with traces of ancient baths and structures.
The historic old port town of Chania lies along the northern coast with its Venetian harbor, seaside palaces and busy resorts.
You are within about an hour’s drive to the medieval archeological heritage village of Maroulas situated just a few miles from the Venetian harbor town of Rethymno along the northern coast. The western coast features wild natural landscapes and two of the top ten ranked beaches in Greece: Balos and Elafonisi.
