This cabin for rent in Germany comes to us from a hospitality collective based in Frankfurt whose guiding tenets are community, sustainability, culture, music and design. They've created hotels before, but this is their first "hideaway project", and we are 100% on board.

A little timbered house in the black of the forest, Luchs was designed as a secret place that celebrates the simplicity of life, a short distance but a world away from the big city. With dark, atmospheric interiors that invite you to sink into the space and unwind completely, this is a great escape for a couple or small family.

Surrounded by meadows and forests, in a lush garden full of fruit trees, vegetables, wild herbs and honeybees, this small, half-timbered house was named after the lynx, a solitary wild cat that inhabits forests and dense shrubs. Built in 1903, the cabin was carefully restored with the help of Studio ABERJA, retaining its original character with carefully selected antique furnishings and warm wood paneling, but updated with contemporary lines and colors, as well as gorgeous tiling. 

We love the use of color, including varying wood tones, gentle mauves, pops of yellow, and sleek coats of glossy black that are reminiscent of Asian lacquerware. Korean characters, in fact, are part of the design concept and appear on elements within the cabin. 

The fireplace is a standout feature, lined in rich mustard ceramic tiles designed by Sebastian Herkner and handmade in Bavaria for Kaufmann Keramik. On the walls are oil paintings by Serbian artist Dragan Bibin, and Boris Lukic from Bosnia. Beds are by Finnish designers Fennobed, and linens are from Danish textile makers Kvadrat.

There's no television. Instead, inside the house, you'll find music, books and games. Outside are bicycles and other sports equipment, a small, natural pool, a hidden wine cellar (with a selection of wines and spirits), plus a stone pizza oven. Pick what you want from the abundance in the garden and eat it slowly in this most timeless of settings.

There is a king bed in the master bedroom and a sofa bed in the living room that's perfect for a child, but an additional bed can be provided if needed, making the cabin suitable for a maximum of two adults and two children.

AROUND

This cabin for rent in Germany is only 30 minutes from Frankfurt am Main by car, with the last part of the journey achieved on foot. Tucked into the southern slopes of the Taunus mountains north of the big city, it's a great location for hiking and exploring the outdoors.

Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, once the home of German emperors, is well known for its mineral springs. In fact, that's where the moniker Bad (meaning "bath") comes from. If you need a break from forest bathing at Luchs, you can check into the Kur-Royal Day Spa or Siddhalepa Ayurveda for treatments or spend the day at the Taunus Terme thermal baths. The town also has a great selection of restaurants, cafés and bars.
