What we like about this property

We love the old world feel and bohemian vibe here. There’s a great long ago hidden identity and history that has not been overpowered by modern intrusion.  A truly peaceful and creative approach to village life.

Description

The long history of this residence is evident the moment you lay eyes on it. Built in the 16th century and home at one time to both a travelers hotel and convent, it retains it’s historic character and has become a relaxing and artistic sanctuary. Housed in the same complex as it’s companion apartment Le Beau Voyageur, you can have your choice of two distinctive residences.

Nestled within the lower floor of this magnificent building, this deceptively spacious, light filled apartment is a relaxing and lovingly restored hideaway. With soaring beamed ceilings and a spacious and bright layout, the colorful accents, polished concrete floors and discreet contemporary touches bring a fresh modern spirit.

Using local materials and influences along with great personal and classic French style, the effect is one of the beauty of imperfection and from where you’ll enjoy views of the ancient leafy courtyard and the village.

With two full bedrooms and one small bath, the apartment can accommodate up to four and benefits from the great communal layout of the building. There is an artists workshop along with a beautiful arched gallery where the hosts feature open house nights with music and art exhibitions.

Simple and rustic, this is a great find that is a step back in time and a chic little hideaway from which to enjoy the French countryside.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Wifi throughout, large screen TV and DVD player, CD player and iPod docking audio system. Communal BBQ, ping pong table bicycles and laundry facilities.

AROUND

The village of Caromb is ideally situated to enjoy the best of Provence and is a lovely and relaxed location to explore. With views of nearby Mont Ventoux, you’ll want to set out and discover the region rich in culture just a short distance from the Cote D’Azur.

It was lovely coming back to stay after having loved this place last year. Still as beautiful as we remembered and we look forward to coming back ( for longer) next year again!

    In one word: Amazing!
Axelle and Ian has turned this ancient house into a real gem. The three-story building includes two apartments, Axelle and Ian’s own home, and a huge first floor with a performance room, a medieval-looking vaulted hall, a garden and several more magical nooks and niches.
Our apartment was on the top level, and was absolutely spectacular. It had two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a bathroom, and – get this – a chill out room (!) with bean bags and lots of natural light. Perfect for Yoga, reading or winding down with a bottle of wine after a long day out.
The apartment also has a huge terrace with a wonderful view to the Provencal landscape, and another more intimate little balcony, where we had breakfasts next to the canopy of large fig tree.
Staying at this place just felt like an adventure. Beautiful oriental ornaments are scattered around the house, and after 3 days at the place we were still running into new ones that we hadn’t noticed yet. Everything in the house, from the window frames to the staircases, exerts character. On our first evening Axelle and Ian gave us a tour around the house, which was worthy of a visit on its own. We were also tremendously lucky to stay there on the night when Axelle and Ian held an open house, with a BBQ, a dance party in the cellar-hall (which Ian Deejayed) and a mesmerizing musical performance by Axelle.
Almost needless to say, Ian and Axelle were marvelous hosts. They sent us a useful 6-page recommendations- and orientation document before we arrived, and during our stay were so charming, helpful and interesting that our departure felt like saying goodbye to old friends.
The location of the place is terrific, in a magical alley on the edge of the lovely little village of Caromb. Boulangeries, grocery stores and other shops are all in a short walking distance. A little farther, outside the village, are splendid hiking trails. Don’t miss Chapelle du Paty on the hilltop and Lac du Paty a little further down the hill.
Within a 1-hour driving radius are Mt. Ventoux, Avignon, and plenty of scenic villages.
If you’re visiting Provence do not miss out on Ian and Axelle’s amazing place in Caromb!

The highlight of our honeymoon was the week we spent at Le Refuge de l’Artiste, amazing property in Provence. They are warm and hospitable hosts. The house is even more gorgeous then it appears in the photos. It’s a beautiful and historic building with all the character you’d expect from a house that’s been around since the 16th century combined with all the modern comforts you need for a perfect vacation. Things like good Wifi, a beautiful bathroom (with plenty of hot water), nice beds, washer and dryer and a totally outfitted kitchen. It also has two amazing terraces, 3 if you count the awesome chill out room off the roof terrace. That would have been more than enough but you also get access to all the spaces on the first level of the property which includes two gorgeous courtyards, the one you see in the cover photo, and second with an outdoor cooking space, meditation room, gallery, music room with a huge collection of DVD’s etc. The layout of the compound gives you complete privacy when you want it. The location is also perfect, Caromb is a medium size village so it has everything you need (grocery, butcher, cafes, restaurants, ATM) a short walk from your front gate. Caromb is perfectly located for day tripping around Provence. Avignon, Carpentras, Le Baroux, Vaison la Romaine, Nyons, Beaumes de Venice, Chateuneuf-du-pape, Isle-sur-Sorgue, Gorde and the Mt Ventoux and are all a short drive away. Axelle and Ian are charming hosts, there to answer any question or help with any need, but also completely unobtrusive. We can’t wait to visit them and their amazing property again!

From the moment you go through the huge solid wooden door from the street into the magical courtyard, you know you have come to a special place. Le Refuge de l’Artiste is a treasure with fascinating architecrual features and an intriguing history which Axelle and Ian generously share with their guests.

The spacious 2-bedroom apartment we stayed in was gorgeous – starting with the very comfortable large beds, lovingly decorated and furnished rooms, cool shady dining terrace, a second sunny chill out terrace (with fantastic views of Mont Ventoux), relaxation room and lounge area. Plenty of space for four or more people to comfortably spread out or be together.

Ian and Axelle were very easy to deal with prior to our stay and really friendly during it. They were very generous with the use of their huge garage for storing all our bikes and with the use of their washing machine for all that bike gear.

Caromb is a lovely little town with bags of character and all the amenities you need. It’s a great base from which to explore this part of France and if Mont Ventoux is part of the attraction of coming to this region for you, Le Vieil Hopital is the perfect place to stay – you will not get a better view of it from the lovely upper terrace.

It’s a tall house so may not be suitable for anyone who struggles with climbing stairs but other than that, I would highly recommend this place to anyone: couples, families or groups of friends.
