Sustainable, Pastoral Beauty

Whether you require one double bedroom or all six, the Lansdowne Farm Lodge and its campus are yours to enjoy exclusively. It’s an ideal place for family reunions, travelling friends, retreats, meetings and celebrations.

The land is anchored by a rich history: Charles Upham, New Zealand’s most decorated soldier, lived on it for many years and the gentle, custodial approach to the land that presided then remains now. Built in 2011, the property is still a 1,500-acre working pastoral farm located south of Kaikoura. The owners call it a “seaside sanctum,” and with good reason: it is a place between beach and rolling mountains, where dolphin pods pass you by, where the clean lines of modern architecture free you from life’s static.

“It is an honour to be farming ‘Charlie’s’ place, a privilege to share the story of his remarkable life,” say the Lansdowne Lodge owners.

Description

This vacation rental in New Zealand is a farmhouse compound with six bedrooms and three bathrooms total, sleeping up to 16 guests.

The ocean and mountain-facing common house was designed with friends, family or colleagues in mind. Comprising one large space surrounded by moveable glass walls, it also has a wraparound deck, with a huge, engaging kitchen, drop-down movie screen and inside-outside audio.

The “walls” act more like doors, folding back to sheltered decks, linking to bathrooms, laundry, six double bedrooms, and the grounds. The Common House can comfortably seat up to 70 people for dinner and dancing. Its facilities are chef friendly, with a stainless cooking and prep scullery and an open kitchen, with two ovens, two fridges and two dishwashers.

The kitchen is well-appointed with high-quality cookware and dishes. Self-catering is permitted, or the owners are happy to arrange a chef on your behalf (The farm offers a varied selection of lamb and beef from the property, which can be supplied at modest prices. Lansdowne wild pork and venison is almost always available). It is also strongly encouraged that you sample the Pacific bounty: fish, paua (abalone), mussels, kina (urchin roe) and koura – some of which is caught right in front of Lansdowne Farm.

Formerly the homestead’s lounge, the book-lined library is now a delightful, free-standing building that shares the main bathroom.

In The North and South Bunkhouse, two large rooms straddle and share a bathroom and an outdoor shower. Both rooms have wood-burning fireplaces, sweeping views and detached privacy. North has the only King bed.

The Cabanas are three compact, free-standing rooms, sharing the main bathroom. Each has an extendable awning over an outside deck overlooking native vegetation. They include running water and an ice chest, luggage storage and WiFi. Views out across Big Bush to the seaward Kaikoura mountain range.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Crisp, cotton bed linens, your choice of pillows, wool blankets or feather duvets, bedside reading lights, BBQ gas or wood fire (Argentine parrilla style), fully-equipped kitchen, essentials, internet, TV, heating, cable TV, hot tub, washer, free parking on premises, indoor fireplace, shampoo, family/kid-friendly, smoking allowed, pets live on this property, suitable for events, wheelchair accessible, smoke detector, safety card, fire extinguisher, first aid kit

AROUND

This vacation rental in New Zealand is located 45 minutes south of Kaikoura and two hours north of Christchurch, at the end of 12km of gravel road running along the Pacific Ocean. From native forest walks to stargazing to playing a game of Petanque, there are many ways to enjoy the property without leaving.

Outside of it, there are equally myriad ways to explore, from strolling the Pacific Beach to taking a picnic or flying a kite on the Conway River. A true kiwi experience is the two-day hike called Kaikoura Coast Track, which takes you over the tops of the peninsula and offers sweeping sea views. Cottage stays and Maori campsites welcome you along the way.

Other sporting approaches might involve a horseback, ATV or bicycle ride. Farm tours are also offered, and skeet shooting and hunting can also be arranged.

LOCATION

Conway Coast, New Zealand. Nearest airport: Christchurch Airport (156.5 km). Helicopter service is available there too, or at Wellington or Kaikoura. There is also a Rail Trans Scenic train to Kaikoura, and a bus that can take you to Cheviot or Kaikoura (the host will meet you at the respective stations).

We spent a fabulous week in late autumn with warm days climbing on the hills, napping on the deck, chilly nights by the fire. One glorious afternoon we took ATV’s down to the beach and headed north – going several miles before we saw any other people, precisely four, and they were not even on the beach, then a couple more miles to where a pristine river empties into the ocean. I was amazed by the silence. This was utterly unlike any other trip I have ever taken. I long to return.

Wow! What an incredible weekend at Lansdowne Farm luxury lodge. We were amongst a family group who had the privilege of staying here in June 2018. We had sole use of the architecturally designed Common House with its great kitchen, outdoor fire BBQ and deck overlooking the farm hills and Pacific ocean. My husband and I stayed in one of the private, immaculate and comfortable cabanas. A perfect escape while still having all the modern amenities. Highly recommended.

Our family of 4 stayed here in early January. We have an almost 8-year old boy and a 10- year old girl. We were doing a lot of things on the south island and came across this place. We ended up having such an incredible time that we extended our stay by a day. Heather and Keith are incredible hosts–they both manage the working ranch and also the guests at the farm. Heather is an incredible cook and made us some amazing meals. It’s a very quiet, low key place where you make your own adventure. For us, that meant hiking, feeding chickens, taking their ATV’s (4-wheelers) down to the beach and riding all along the shoreline, looking at seals, having a picnic lunch, etc. On a rainy day, we played monopoly for hours with the kids. There’s also a library where I just perused books for awhile and relaxed. This place was magical and the most special part of our entire 2-week NZ adventure! It’s very remote so keep that in mind. Heather keeps a well-stocked pantry and can get you groceries ahead of time. The accommodations are beautiful. For the maximum amount of people (12 I think?) the bathroom would have to be shared a bit, but for our family of 4, it was so easy. We can’t say enough good things about Lansdowne Farm and Heather and Keith!

My sisters and I, along with their children spent the week at Lansdowne Farm during the early spring season. What a treat to find this unique and private coastal oasis. The experience was much more than we expected and was perfect for our large group. From the days spent on the beach, to the sunrise Pacific Ocean views, to indoor/outdoor common house where we shared meals & movie nights and to nights spent under the stars- this was a once in a lifetime find. We were immediately welcomed by the farmer hosts with fresh flowers and an offer to take a farm tour- nice touch. The children all enjoyed watching the cows in the pasture and there were even baby lambs! We wanted to find a place to enjoy nature, spend time together and to relax. All of the sleeping quarters and common areas were immaculate, well appointed and comfortable. My advice when you go is to not miss the fern filled hikes and to try to take a bath in the outdoor tubs. The kids also got a kick out of the outdoor showers. We will be back.

Wow! What a spectacular place. My partner and I organized a group of 4 other couples (we took over 5 of the 6 bedrooms) and had the place to ourselves for 4 spectacular days and nights. Long walks on the beach were a highlight (so many cute seal pups!), and the amount of stars out were incredible when we relaxed in the huge tub to soothe our sore muscles after days spent hiking. 100% recommend if you and yours enjoy the great outdoors, before coming home to luxury. Thank you Heather for taking such good care of us, and say hi to the chickens for us!
