Lovingly maintained to honor it’s historic origins, and with only the subtlest modern updates, this original Colonial home is so authentic we felt lost in time. A horse and carriage would not be out of place here!
Steeped in antiquity and with barely a hair out of place historically, the Wilton House is an early American classic. Reverently maintained and carefully restored, this house has withstood the test of time with a lasting grace and elegance. The simple Colonial architecture and hearty materials remain but with a warmth and sense of a rich, bygone era.
Built in 1763 by William Churchill, the patriarch of one of Virginia’s most prominent colonial era families, this Georgian plantation house is representative of the traditional T-shaped structures of it’s time.
Elegant and refined, the house is anchored by the paneled parlor and reception rooms with original “Williamsburg blue” paint applied over 200 years ago. The showpiece of the home, it is where you imagine the two centuries of history unfolding.
Furnished throughout with authentic late period Colonial antiques, eight fireplaces and an inspired collection of 18th and 19th century paintings, Wilton House retains it’s timeless appeal.
The adjacent “red room” and parlor are an ideal place to entertain and lead to the kitchen with it’s warm 250 year old brick hearth and adjacent Federal period dining room that seats eight. Updated and equipped with the finest state of the art appliances as well as Limoges china, crystal and formal tableware, the kitchen nevertheless retains all of it’s old world charm with everything you’ll need.
With a total of three bedrooms and three baths, the home sleeps six. The master bedroom is the most private and includes a beautiful 19th century four poster bed, fireplace and en suite Carrera marble bath.
The two additional bedrooms are both intimate retreats that are individually outfitted with period antiques, with one featuring an en suite bath with claw foot tub.
Surrounded by twenty five acres of woodlands, the boundary creates a nearly one mile loop around the property affording complete privacy and natural beauty.
Finally, there are other remnants of what this grand plantation once represented. Former slave quarters and a separate log cabin have been restored and are now welcoming places apart from the main house. Both have fireplaces and inviting interiors to enjoy solitude and reflection.
Simple, timeless and remarkably well-preserved, this elegant home invites you to ponder the past, and enjoy a story told through architecture and time.
Concierge services and daily housekeeping are available upon request. All appliances are state of the art: Miele, Wolf, Sub-zero, Nespresso and includes geothermal, all season temperature control.
While there are no TV screens at Wilton House, there is high speed Wi-Fi throughout, along with two Bose music/audio systems. Luxury linens and laundry facilities are included. A large library, music collection and games for on-site entertainment.
Catering available. Ample parking.
Along with plenty of outdoor activities, history is everywhere! One hour from Colonial Williamsburg, Richmond, Virginia’s Historic Triangle and the James River Plantations, there are an overwhelming amount of cultural and historical points of interest to see. Situated in the middle peninsula, near the Piankatank and Rappahannock Rivers and Chesapeake Bay, it’s a beautiful place to hike, kayak, golf, cycle and explore with terrific local dining, shopping and antiquing.
In Hartfield, Virginia. Approximately fifty miles from Richmond International Airport

A just published book, 15 years in the making, by the folks at Colonial Williamsburg, entitled 'The Chesapeake House,' features a picture of the front hallway at Wilton on the cover. It's a stunning image, but one that is easily matched by a dozen or more interior and exterior sights at this remarkable property. Two hundred and fifty year-old woodwork with 250 year-old paint. Paneled interior shutters on 9 over 9 windows downstairs, 6 over 6 up. Twenty-three -- count'em -- window seats. Heart pine floor boards, never varnished and never ever sanded, that have only gotten more beautiful, and soulful, with time. Wilton will be high on the list for lovers of old architecture and historical homes. But you won't have to be a history buff to recognize that this is simply a beautiful place to slow down, breath deeply, and allow your soul to rest and then expand.
