What we like about this property

From the amazing location and views, to the private jungle trails and waterfalls, this sweet vacation home rental on Maui on a working coffee plantation is a special slice of paradise. Peaceful and private, it’s a privileged place to enjoy the island.

Description

Set above a jungle gorge on a twenty acre coffee plantation on the slopes of Maui, this lovingly restored 1920’s country house is a charming homage to Hawaii’s early plantation days. Part of a larger farm compound of three dwellings, this cottage is completely independent and secluded bordering a forest preserve in complete privacy. A year round stream runs through the property and you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, Maliko Valley, the western Maui mountains and on a clear day Moloka’i.

The bright and cheerful living areas are intimate and cozy with a fireside lounge space and expansive lanais. Upstairs under vaulted wood ceilings are two double bedrooms, each with private lanais and gorgeous treetop views of Haleakela, the surrounding jungle and the ocean in the distance.

Unique local and contemporary decor and furnishings along with some colorful accents and tile work keep the detail light and fun.

Every effort has been made to create a low impact, eco-friendly and sustainable lifestyle, primarily using locally sourced and recycled materials.

Tours of the farm and grounds include hikes through the forest trails to see the ancient Hawaiian pictographs, waterfalls, artesian springs and pools and gives an overview of the layout of the extensive undeveloped land. Located along the Maliko stream in the “Kukui Grove” section of the farm, there is a secluded picnic pavilion with stunning views of waterfalls which you can hike to on a private trail within a half hour of the house. This charming vacation home rental on Maui immerses you in paradise.

My husband and I have had the extreme pleasure of staying twice at this cottage, though to call it a cottage is a stretch. It’s SO much more. Built on a point, the house is surrounded on all four sides with astonishing views. From the ocean to a waterfall, a jungle, even the road in, long and narrow, provides incredible privacy and beauty. The first visit was in March, then again 18 months later in Sept/Oct. and both times were exactly the same. Perfect in every way. Inside, there is not one item that we wanted for. The kitchen is better stocked than our own back home! And don’t get me started on the hospitality of your hosts. Syd and Maurice will do anything for you, they too could not be more perfect. We’ve looked for other places to vacation however there’s no doubt, there’s only one Maliko. The place settles in your memory, lives in your bones. We’ll be back, that much we know. Huge thanks as always.

My wife and I are armature wildlife photographers specializing in birds. We travel a lot. Makiko Retreat is certainly the nicest place we have ever stayed. You can see the lovely indoors in the pictures they provide above. What you can not see is the fabulous vistas that awaited us when we got there and the local bird life.

The cottage is situated in total isolation on a promontory above a valley full of flowering trees. The vistas consist of a wonderful view down the valley to the harbor and then all the way to Molokai. This is on one side. You can see the entire Haleakala volcano on the other.

The bird life if wonderful. Our charming hostess, Sydney Smith, provided us with a bird feeder and seed. Every morning we would fill the feeder and a fabulous assortment of colorful birds would come in to feed. If you want even more birds, slice up some soft fruit and put it on the railing of the bottom lanai.

I wish this review site would allow posting of pictures. We have lots of them to share.

    Regards to all.

We had a wonderful stay at Maliko Estate! The house was wonderful, with sweeping jungle and ocean views, beautiful furnishings, and everything we needed. Sydney was a lovely host — she gave us a tour of the property (including the coffee farm and some ancient petroglyphs) and made sure we had everything we needed. We can’t wait to go back!

You will be surrounded by beauty inside and out during your stay at this cottage. I’ve stayed here twice (2012 and 2013), and I will definitely return. The photos richly illustrate the warmly eclectic decor that includes artifacts and architectural detail reclaimed from buildings throughout Maui. No photo could capture the stunning 360 degree views and the wide range of wildlife and natural flora that awaits outdoors. Your view includes a verdant tropical forest ranging throughout a large gulch as well as a seasonal waterfall. Sydney and Maurice are wonderful hosts, and they will ensure that your stay is most pleasant. The cottage rests in a very private location, but several good restaurants and grocery stores are only a few minutes/miles away. Pa’ia and Ho’okipa Beach are less that fifteen minutes away when you need to hit the beach. Enjoy the view, and be sure to feed the songbirds that show up at breakfast time each morning!
