The main house, the iconic property known as the Mountain Mermaid, was built in 1930 when this mountain community was a distant outpost, with this charmer added on more recently. The area affords tranquility and peace surrounded by wild, cultivated gardens and access.
Color washed in blue, the exteriors give way to bright, cheerful interiors with multiple windows and doors that flood the home with light. The ground floor houses the eat-in kitchen, an intimate lounge/bedroom with a fireplace and a room dedicated to a blissful oversized two-person tub lit by candlelight with a wall of glass doors that opens out to the gardens. Tucked away upstairs is an uber-romantic tower bedroom.
The courtyard with three babbling fountains set within the peaceful landscaped grounds is where you’ll want to hang out and enjoy the sights and sounds of the canyon.

Set above the coast in the Santa Monica mountains, Topanga Canyon is a bucolic and peaceful mountain community that straddles the Pacific coast and the San Fernando Valley. Featuring the largest state park within city limits in the US, there are miles of wilderness and land to explore. It’s just a short drive to Malibu or Santa Monica and a half hour from the greater Los Angeles area.
