Case Study architect Architect Pierre Koenig’s masterfully crafted home represents the golden age of mid-century modern architecture in Southern California. A rare gem tucked away in the hills above the city, this holiday home in Los Angeles is one of those strikingly preserved houses whose visionary design remains relevant and modern over a half century later. We love the sensitive restoration and the colorful and expressive interior design that showcases and preserves the style of the era for today.
The fourth stunning house built by Case Study architect Pierre Koenig, the Scott House in Los Angeles is located in the quiet and lesser known mountain community of Tujunga, adjacent to the Angeles National Forest. Perched above the city with sweeping views, the house is in dynamic balance with the hilltop location, and is a beautifully preserved example of his visionary style.
Built in 1954 and purchased from the original owners, the home’s distinctive L-shape is similar to his other famous homes and has been sensitively renovated to maintain all of the original mid-century structural details, allowing the original beauty of the residence to be revealed.
Constructed of steel, glass, concrete and slate, the design is a masterful example of architectural simplicity, and an illustration of Koenig’s preference for industrial and prefabricated materials. Straightforward and minimal with spare clean lines, the walls of glass completely immerse you into the land but with a cozy intimacy.
The central living area is a bright and expansive space that communicates with the rest of the house through the use of sliding glass doors and is anchored by a two sided fireplace and divider wall. The kitchen has been updated into a gleaming modern space for foodies with the separate indoor dining area and smaller outdoor dining area through the glass doors. There are two double bedrooms that sleep up to four guests.
Smartly curated design touches include a striking collection of vintage modern furnishings and art along with treasures from the owners personal collection that decorate without detracting.
The restoration extends outside to the fabulous outdoor habitat and gardens designed to complement the house, with walkways snaking through the half acre property and lounge areas for dining and enjoying the beautiful Southern California scenery.
Guests interested in creating old-fashioned letterpress work can join the owner in her authentic LETTERPRESS printing studio, which is located at the bottom of the lot where you can get creative and print some cool, individualized greeting cards.
This holiday home in Los Angeles presents a rare opportunity to experience the architectural legacy of one of America’s mid-century pioneers.
