Rare Chance to Experience a Legendary Sea Ranch Chalet

A 1960s Sea Ranch original designed by renowned architect Joseph Esherick to exemplify a clever, affordable, weekend chalet, this property was built as a demonstration home to show to potential buyers in the legendary community. The sweet, natural escape was dubbed the Mini-Mod #3 for its creatively designed, compact spaces. 

The cabin for rent in California is one of the few of its kind that remains relatively unchanged today. Artful upgrades have been made at the hands of its new owner, who contributed period furnishings and art, and modernized the space for functionality with respect for the iconic original.

Built to showcase how the legendary, mid-century modern Sea Ranch development could offer affordable designer getaways to homeowners wanting to get back to nature, the Mini-Mod #3 was designed by AIA Gold Medal-winning architect Joseph Esherick, who created the cabin with George Homsey. The latter declared the Mini-Mod the “best version” of the duo’s cleverly designed affordable homes at Sea Ranch, and this property was soon snatched up by one of the community’s original Board of Director members.

Surprisingly unchanged—most of the Mini-Mods were reconfigured and expanded over subsequent decades—this cabin reveals the ingenuity of the original design and features necessary changes made for functionality, preservation and décor, created with great respect for the structure’s integrity, and with Homsey’s blessing.

Virtually abandoned for a decade, the property has been upgraded, insulated, and redecorated. Its 685 square feet now showcase a cool, brightening refurbishment by Framestudio Architects founder Chad DeWitt and husband James Cook. The cabin’s three levels are connected by an open-air staircase for maximum natural light, and feature reclaimed wood from the property, upcycled eco-materials, and the innovative use of space via mid-century-styled built-ins. The tiny house is pure Sea Ranch, with updated wood siding and decks outdoors that blend into the natural environment as well as supergraphics inspired by Barbara Solomon Stauffacher, the creator of the original Sea Ranch logo.


AROUND

Tucked under the giant redwood canopy in the coastal forest at Sea Ranch’s south end, this cabin for rent in California has no neighbors in sight, but is only one mile from the community’s Sea Ranch Lodge and Black Point Beach. 

Sea Ranch’s Moonraker Recreation Center, with its heated pool, saunas, and tennis/pickleball courts, is also a mile from the cabin, and its architecture is notable, with its wind-blocking wall, flying buttresses and “saddle bag bays" that create its interior. The graphic design work of Barbara Stauffacher Solomon, whose art is also on display in the chalet, covers the Center’s interior. 

Within the Sea Ranch, there are over 50 miles of hiking trails, forest foraging and beach combing along its 10 miles of coast. Just north, the town of Gualala offers all necessary services, with restaurants, cafes, and bakeries.

Cancellation Policy Firm
The guest will receive a refund if the booking is canceled at least 60 days before the time of check-in. If the guest cancels 30-60 days before the start of the stay, they will receive a 50% refund. If they cancel within 30 days of the start of the stay, no refund will be given.

BoutiqueHomes service fee is refundable in line with the booking cancellation policy, minus a 3.25% credit card transaction fee which is non-refundable.
Covid-19 Policy
Only in the event the cancellation is a direct result of the pandemic (government orders the stoppage of vacation rentals or the authorities decide to restrict travel from the country of origin or to the country where the property is located), guests will be given the opportunity to receive full credit for their reservation if they rebook within one year. If the guest is unable to take the credit, the guest will receive a full refund if the booking is canceled at least 14 days before the arrival date. If the guest cancels 1 -14 days before the start of the stay they will receive a 50% refund. If they cancel within 24 hours of the stay, no refund will be given.
Notes Lockbox Our lockbox is to the right of the blue laundry door on the front stoop. The code is 9549. The front door is the sliding door. If you're arriving after sunset, remember The Sea Ranch is very dark, and the community does not allow outdoor lights to be left on. We'll leave an interior light on to make things easier, but plan on using some sort of flashlight. Arrival stuff • Wifi password is yub-nub! • The heat will turn on automatically. The thermostat is located above the refrigerator. • Outdoor butterfly chair covers are located the mesh bag hanging on the coat rack. . • There's a hidden privacy door at the top of the stairs to close off the bunk room from the loft bedroom. Parking We allow a maximum of two cars, which must be parked inside the fenced parking area. The community has a very strict NO RV, Sprinter vans, or trailer policy. ID and parking passes Because The Sea Ranch is private, you'll need parking passes and ID cards to access the recreation centers. There are two parking passes and four ID cards hanging on a lanyard on the coat rack in the kitchen. You'll need to display the parking pass in your car, which will allow you to park at the Recreation Centers and at the Beaches. To use any of the recreation centers, you'll need to present the ID cards. It is very important that the four ID cards and two parking passes are returned when you leave. Welcome to Mini-Mod #3! We hope this guide provides you all the information you might need. If you have any questions or need our help, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. Relax, enjoy yourselves, and whatever you do, please don’t make us famous! ~james, chad The Mini-Mod is over 50 years old, and takes a bit of care to keep it up. • For our guests with children, please place breakables out of reach. • Please only flush what has come out of your body or on TP down the toilet. • Use only water to clean up spills on the sofa. • Please do not drape wet towels over the railings. Use the peg coat racks instead. • You are welcome to snuggle with your dog on the sofa after protecting it with drop cloth from the basket nearby. A dog bed, bowls, leash and dog bags are provided. • The redwood forest is full of flying insects. If any get indoors, turn on the light switch labeled "bug" located next to the kitchen. We use it as a nightlight, while trapping the unwelcome guests. The Rules of the Ranch Under the surface of our quiet community is a strictly enforced set of rules. The Sea Ranch has its own private security which patrols the community, and keeps an eye on specifically on rental properties like ours. Please abide by the following in order for us to not to be cited and fined: • No smoking in the house or on the trails or roads. If you must smoke, please smoke within the fenced parking area only, and be mindful of extinguishing your cigarette. • Dogs must be on leash, and in your control at all times (even in the yard.) Please pick up after your dog. Our dog park is up the road on Deer Trail just east of Highway 1. • No amplified music outdoors. There are strict 9pm-7am quiet hours. Please no yelling, or loud voices during that time. • Please observe the posted speed limits. • Stay on the trails. Much of The Sea Ranch is private property, which should be respected. • No flying of drones (indoors and out) Outdoors • Covers for the outdoor butterfly chairs are located in the bag hanging on the coat rack. • Please turn off the tank valve when you're done grilling. Heat The thermostat is located above the refrigerator. It can take some time to bring the cabin up to temperature. We suggest building a fire in the fireplace in the mean time. Fireplace Other Esherick owners confide that we all share fireplaces with a poor draw, which causes the slight smoke scent to the house. The firewood is located by the parking area next to the trash bins. WHEN STARTING A FIRE, PLEASE MAKE CERTAIN THE DAMPER IS OPEN. It's a metal lever located in the upper left of the firebox. The damper is open when the lever is up. Please crack a window is cracked to assist with the draw (we often crack the bathroom window.) Please use firestarters and kindling to start a robust fire, in order to prevent smoke damage to the house. Do not close the fireplace doors while there is a fire, as the glass will break. GUESTS WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR SMOKE DAMAGE TO THE HOUSE, WHICH CAN COST THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. PLEASE BE CAREFUL. If fire alarms go off, Security may be summoned for a welfare check. Hazards & Emergencies The forest is home to mountain lions, bears, scorpions, black widow spiders, biting redwood spiders, Sasquatch, ticks and poison oak. Be careful and pay attention, especially at night. There’s a first aid kit in the kitchen drawer above the dishwasher, and urgent medical services are available at Redwood Coast Medical Services in Gualala at 707.884.4005. In an emergency, dial 911. With the remoteness, power does occasionally go out in the area during storms. There is a power outage kit in the loft room closet. Use ice packs in the freezer to extend the life of the perishables. The Del Mar Center at 40600 Leeward Rd has a generator and fully functional kitchen for use during an extended power outage. TV and Music We provide streaming live TV through Hulu. Download the Sonos app to play your own playlist on the Soundbar. Hot Tub and a few safety reminders • Check the water temperature before use. • Shower before using the hot tub to remove dirt and oil based products. • Children must be supervised at all times. • No diving or jumping. • Try to limit the tub usage to 15 min intervals to avoid dizziness, nausea and fainting. • Consult your doctor prior to tub use if you have any medical conditions. • • Pregnant women must consult a doctor prior to use. • Do not use the tub if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. • Replace the tub cover after use. Check-Out Check out is at 11am (sharp). Here's a quick checklist for your departure. • Double check to make certain you’ve not left anything behind. The house is inventoried after each stay, so should you leave something behind, we'll be in touch. • Return the ID cards and parking passes to the lanyard and hang them on the coat rack. There is a $250 fee for any missing parking passes or ID cards. • If you’re feeling domestic (or just plain guilty), go ahead and start a load of dishes and take out the trash. Please leave the laundry to the housekeepers for sanitization. • Please lock all the doors and close the windows. Return the keys to the lockbox.
