What we like about this property

This vacation home rental in Pioneertown is located in a magical high desert setting surrounded by expansive desert conservancy land in an enviable spot of great natural beauty. We like the lovingly tended gardens and the southwestern inspired adobe home that complements its place within the landscape.

Description

Situated at 4,400 feet and set within a vast and peaceful tract of over 20 acres of high desert, this vacation home rental in Pioneertown is a refuge of serenity and spectacular natural beauty. Located in a largely undiscovered gem called Pipes Canyon Valley, it’s just a stone’s throw from historic Pioneertown at the foothills of the Big Bear mountains adjoining over 30,000 acres of nature conservancy land.

The charming adobe home is perfectly suited to the desert environment and is a homey and comfortable retreat designed as a peaceful and restorative place for relaxation and exploration. The cozy layout includes a comfy living area and dining space that adjoins  a fully equipped kitchen and one double bedroom. With the sofa bed, the house can accommodate up to five guests. There’s also a screened-in porch that is the go-to spot for sleeping al fresco (weather permitting).

The property is solar and wind powered with all of the mod cons for comfort year round and shares the property with the owner’s home nearby without sacrificing privacy.

The gardens and surrounding landscape have been lovingly maintained as an all-natural oasis with native plants and cactus gardens, a fabulous labyrinth and a meditation teepee.

The property is also part of a wildlife sanctuary and guests are regularly treated to myriad sightings of dozens of bird species, coyotes, bobcats, jackrabbits and more as well as dark skies for epic star gazing.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Owner is a yoga master and can offer instruction. Wifi throughout, satellite cable TV with DVD player and video library, kitchen and bath essentials, laundry facilities, ample parking.

AROUND

Located just outside of Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree National Park in the Pipes Canyon Valley, the home is also within minutes of historic Pioneertown, a kitschy Hollywood relic founded in the 1940s as an authentic frontier town movie set. Today there are a few shops, cafes and galleries to visit including the famous Pappy and Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace. There are miles of outdoor desert adventure in the area as well as several unique attractions and interesting local museums and art venues such as the Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum, and the famed Integratron. Palm Springs is less than an hour drive and further afield, the San Jacinto mountains rise above the desert floor and are lined with miles of hiking trails at a cooler elevation. Indian Canyon and Palm Canyon are also within driving distance for rural getaways in the Coachella Valley area. Los Angeles is a two-hour drive.

LOCATION

Pioneertown, California. Nearest Airport: Palm Springs International (50 miles).

BEST TIME TO VISIT: Spring and Fall are ideal but this part of the desert is fascinating year round. November through March is high season and the winter months are bright and sunny and popular with hikers and rock climbers.

My husband and I and our two kids, ages 6 and 8, were looking for a place to escape LA and not have crowds. The issue with the actual Joshua Tree park is there can be so many crowds. But at High Desert Eden, you don’t even have to go into the park. They have 22 acres and then they butt up to a nature preserve with thousands of more acres to explore. It was truly a respite from all the hustle and bustle and busyness of our lives in LA. and we didn’t even go into the park and deal with hordes of people. Max and Robin live at the house nearby but they are the perfect amount of hands on-hands off. They walk you around the property and are there if you need anything but not intrusive at all. They are incredibly knowledgeable about what to look for in the desert and what not–in terms of the interesting, the dangerous, the fun, etc. The house itself is simple but well done and incredibly clean. I’m a clean freak and look for the small details in a house. It was literally spotless. Sleeping out on the screened in porch with my daughter was heaven. As was roasting marshmallows under the stars with our family. If you go with kids, ask Robin and Max about collecting “stardust”. I would also recommend checking out Giant Rock and Noah Purifoy’s Outdoor Art Museum. I would def recommend this place if you are looking for a true getaway.

We didn’t want to leave. My family of four stayed here for 3 nights. We loved every minute of it! My daughter really liked the labyrinth (thanks Max for making it) and that she didn’t have to share a bed with her brother. I liked that we could go hiking right from our front door, the peace and serenity, oh and all the birds! We saw and heard so many birds (even quail I think?), especially after the rainstorm, all in the comfort of the house. No need to bring books–so many to read on the bookshelf, especially those written by Robin Maxwell.

It really is a desert eden! The house and grounds we’re incredibly beautiful and had everything we needed, including a fully stocked kitchen. And we actually saw more wildlife on the property than we saw in Joshua Tree! I can’t recommend this place enough.

As beautiful as the pictures! We loved our little casita at High Desert Eden. The whole experience met our expectations. and completely lived up to the online billing. The photos did not lie–it is as beautiful as it appears. The casita is very nicely equipped and comfy, and we loved being able to step out the back door and walk up over the rocks as far as we wanted. Robin and Max truly do have a little piece of “Eden” and they were very accommodating and helpful.

My kids and I spent five nights here over our spring break, exploring Joshua Tree NP and the surrounding area. While Joshua Tree is worth experiencing, my favorite part of our time there was the early mornings spent outside, in the utter quiet, with my coffee and the birdsong and rabbit companions. The immediate surroundings are meticulously cared for, with plenty of spots to sit and soften body and mind. The immediate surroundings also provide plenty of opportunity for hiking in the desert, as long as one does not mind a bit of a climb.

The casita itself is comfortable and well-furnished. The sofa bed in the living room is very comfortable, as is the bed on the back porch. There are adequate warm bed coverings available if one wants to sleep out there in cooler temperatures. We truly enjoyed our stay. I loved the National Park, do not feel compelled to return to the park, what would compel me to return to the area is spending more time in the peaceful environs of High Desert Eden. I live on a fairly busy street and the complete quiet and peace I experienced here was an absolute gift. Highly recommended.

Pipes Canyon is a dream! The house is delightful! The property is wonderful!  We loved staying at Robin and Max’s home in Pipes Canyon. The gardens and walks are delightful. Pipes Canyon- outside of Pioneertown is an incredible area- filled with wildlife and plantlife! The house is very comfortable and has a lovely screened in porch. You don’t even need to go into the Joshua Tree Park- the area around the home as everything to see! We very much enjoyed our weekend and and plan on returning very soon!

A place of peace and serenity. Max & Robin are perfect hosts. They rolled out the welcome mat by showing us around their 22 acre well manicured yard. The house is perfect. They have taken care of every detail so all we had to do was relax and enjoy. Our only regret was not staying longer.

Great location, great people, great wildlife viewing
It was an awesome experience spending two nights in the desert at this place. Truly a desert Eden. There are plenty activities around and you’re just a short drive from civilisation but you feel just miles and miles away. It’s a wonderful thing. Max and Robin are very accommodating and very laid back. My girlfriend and I hope to return one day. Stop reading reviews and just book it.

Wonderful People, Wonderful Place, Wonderful Time! If you are looking for some solitude without giving up all the creature comforts, this is your place, Robin and Max are just lovely and they have provided an amazing casita for their guests. I cannot recommend this place high enough. It is perfect for just one person or a family. I plan on bring my wife and kids next time so we can explore the area.

Our stay at the casita was simply the best. The house is cozy and feels like home. The beds are comfy, there are nice fluffy towels supplied and the kitchen is stocked with all the kitchen tools you may need. But beyond the basics, the rejuvenating quality of this property is most important. You have the wide open views of the desert right outside your back door…or from the back porch which is the perfect spot for your morning cup of coffee. Walk out the back and explore Pipes Canyon with its diverse flora and fauna. The hospitality of Max and Robin makes it all come together for a beautiful retreat and relaxing and rejuvenating vacation.

Spectacular! Such a beautiful place to stay! The casita was very comfortable and roomy. Loved the screened in porch to watch the sunrise and to listen to nature. The hosts were awesome! Would highly recommend staying here. Maybe someday we will return to this beautiful casita.

  • Claire, February 17, 2018

Robin and Max’s care of the property and attention to detail (Max even provided a jar of bird seed for us to toss out in the morning to draw in the birds) and delight in sharing it all was evident. Finally, during the stay itself, whether we were relaxing on the back screened-in porch for meals and wine or wandering around the grounds and observing the various meditation areas, we were very content. The only “down” side was that it was difficult to leave the casita and explore other area attractions like Joshua Tree, the nearby Reserve, and the others listed in the information provided on the website (although we eventually made it to the Joshua Tree National Park (a must do!)

Our family spent 4 days during Thanksgiving weekend at the property. Max and Robin welcomed us warmly so we felt like a part of extended, long awaited family. The house is lovely, and in pristine condition. All you need is provided. We spent evenings by the fire pit , enjoying the silence and staring at the bottomless starry sky. The house is located 20 minutes drive from Joshua Tree Park, and the nearby Pioneertown is simply adorable.

This is a beautiful, peaceful retreat with amazing hosts, gardens and location!  Max and Robin are the consummate hosts. We just returned from a 3 night visit for a small family reunion and Joshua Tree exploring/hiking. This was a wonderful oasis to return to at the end of the day. My wife and I (both in our 60’s) loved sleeping outdoors in the screened in sleeping porch even with the temperatures in late December dipping into the low 40’s by dawn.

Robin was super helpful in trip planning, logistics, and local knowledge/tips!!!

My two daughters (18 and 22) and I stayed two nights at this beautiful, relaxing Desert Eden and couldn’t have been more comfortable. Max and Robin were wonderful hosts, providing us with recommendations on where to eat, buy groceries, and which places to see in Joshua Tree. They provided coffee and Mother Nature provided beautiful weather and gorgeous sun rises over the Joshua trees. Their very large property boasts several interesting rock formations (their own Hidden Valley), cholla cacti, many kinds of birds, at least one jack rabbit, and a wild bobcat, which scurried away when he saw us. This is the perfect home- away- from-home to reunite with nature.

What do we love about this place? The owners, Max and Robin, are very welcoming, but unobtrusive. They are involved in lots of interesting things, and happy to share with you, but won’t impose their lives on you if you don’t ask.

The house is clean, comfortable, in good-repair, and well-stocked. But it is not laden with tchotchkes, so you don’t feel you are invading someone else’s home. Outside are a firepit, as well as a barbecue, both stocked. Nice outdoor chairs and chaises. Many little details show that the hosts go above and beyond.

More important than the house itself is the amazing surroundings! It is really desert wilderness, with jackrabbits, coyotes, and many birds strolling, hopping and flitting through. There is also a lot of cool geology, including a wash (stream bed) with iron from meteorites that you can collect with a magnet (very cool for kids). The property backs onto a Preserve (forget the name), so you can just wander for miles. And if you are not familiar with this kind of desert environment, you really can just wander. There are no tall trees to block your view, and you can walk without a path. You might worry about getting lost, but just climb up one of the many knolls, and you can quickly orient yourself.
