What we like about this property

This sweet little casa is an exotic and private retreat that feels handmade with love. Aside from the great casual outdoor living layout, we appreciated the light touch and eco-sensitive approach to living in the fragile jungle environment. Wild and unspoiled, the pristine land around the home offers breathtaking views and unparalleled privacy and natural beauty.

Description

Designed with a commitment to limit it’s impact on the environment, this charming home also clearly celebrates the lifestyle and traditional architecture of the culture.

Secluded and nestled within pristine jungle habitat with abundant wildlife on over eleven acres of coastal wilderness, Tropical Ocean Eco-Retreat is enchanting as well as environmentally responsible. With ocean front access to stunning secluded beaches as well as miles of trails throughout the mountainside, you’ll be able to enjoy nature no matter where you are.

The open concept living design was conceived to take advantage of the location’s spectacular views and climate, and offers an intimate and private experience. Built on multiple levels with serene ocean and jungle views, where palm trees rise up from the terrace floor, a giant Clavellina tree swoops over the outdoor tub for two, the home includes intricate tile and masonry work along with an assortment of Mexican surrealistic art and decor.

The bright comfy bedroom is entirely enclosed with four large windows that offer breathtaking views while the rest of the property remains delightfully open and airy for an indoor outdoor effect.

With an open semi-covered bathroom that’s perfectly suited to the tropical weather, it’a wonderfully romantic way to enjoy a bath under the moon and stars.

The fully equipped open air kitchen with BBQ under the covered terrace provides a great spot to dine alfresco surrounded by jungle and ocean sounds. Guests can also opt for “Jungle Room Service” delivery with a dinner selection from choice restaurants in town.

The Oceanfront Palapa Lounge and expansive living area includes a kitchenette and dining area and is an ideal spot for guests to relax in the hammocks or lounge chairs and spend the day bird and whale watching. Offering a remarkably intimate experience within untouched natural surroundings, Tropical Ocean Eco-Retreat is a perfectly tranquil and stunningly beautiful destination that will refresh your spirit and soothe the soul.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

The area is inhabited with abundant wildlife and ocean life with opportunities for amazing whale watching and bird watching right from the property, along with most water sports just steps away, as well as hiking, horseback riding and fishing.

This place is like poetry yet I am at a loss for words, Solitude, Peace Comfort ~ so much more than we expected. Incredible views, sounds of nature like music to the soul all night long , a peaceful lullaby. The view leaves you speechless. Sunrise viewing from your bed, Sunset from multiple places on property will blow your mind.

Secluded beach front shades in the early hours with afternoon sun ~ healing land, every step is an adventure. Healing body mind soul.

We walked the trails daily & saw many varieties of birds, praying mantis’, crabs, lizards, and more, so delightful. We are very thankful for the hosts who are willing to share their paradise, we will be back for sure.

Carlos & Jodi are great special people who put together amazing meals that we are now only dreaming about. Forever Thankful for such a wonderful experience!

Jodi and Carlos have truly created a paradise. My boyfriend and I came down from the PNW to escape the cold and felt lucky to have stumbled upon Jodi and Carlos’ little slice of heaven. The property is immaculate and filled with loving little touches – chairs facing perfect views with binoculars at the ready, comfy couches and hammocks to relax and read in, and a full kit of chairs, cooler, and umbrella for you perfect beach set-up. We also took advantage of Carlos’s incredible cooking, which featured local products and herbs from their garden. The whole experience was simply magical.

A couple of things we learned from our trip: don’t rent a car! There are a couple of options for transportation in Lo de Marcos and taxis are easily arranged. Bring your hiking shoes! The bungalow and palapa are great to hang out in, but the property offers great trails too. Definitely have Jodi/Carlos make you a few meals. So glad we took advantage of that! And finally, get out and check the surrounding areas and Lo de Marcos. We loved the markets and local beach restaurants in town.

    Thank you Jodi and Carlos!

A vacation dream come true! A SURREAL experience!

My only disappointment was not booking a longer stay. My husband and I booked this beautiful private retreat for our honeymoon. Having just left a busy hotel resort in PV, with family and friends, this was the perfect place to experience much needed rest and relaxation. Upon arriving, Jodi provided us with a very warm welcome, showed us around the premises, and provided us with excellent suggestions for food and activities. We instantly felt comfortable and at home. The feeling of serenity was with us during our entire stay. Everything was BREATHTAKING! The views, the wildlife, the jungle surroundings, our casita roja…all amazing. We highly recommend specially prepared meals provided by Carlos. Dinner in the palapa while watching the sunset and hearing the tejones sip water from the pond was definitely one of the many favorite moments.

All the positive feedback that was mentioned in previous reviews is 100% accurate!!!

Thank you Jodi, Carlos and Raul for your hospitality and kindness. My husband and I are certain we will be returning to Mar al Cielo in the near future:)

The day we arrived driving up the dirt road through the jungle we knew we were in for a treat. We were warmly welcomed by Carlos, Jody, and Raul. Jody showed us around the palapa area overlooking the ocean and then up to our room hidden in the jungle. We spent five completely relaxing days there, enjoying the ocean, watching whales and birds, walks in to town to buy groceries for breakfast, Carlos’s wonderful dinners and Jodi’s charming hospitality. This is a place we are looking forward to returning.

Nowadays, true getaways are hard to come by. Most vacations I had been on before with families and friends were always fun, but always a commercial experience. This was not one of those experiences. It’s original, genuine, and breathtaking. Jodi and Carlos and the team were unbelievably accommodating, and really appreciated just how blown away my wife and I were on our honeymoon. And although this place is secluded and private and nested up on a mountain (feeling a million miles from civilization), there was never a dull moment. My wife and I spent a week here, and we could have spent 51 more weeks there no problem. It has a lot to offer, it was tough to choose what to do even with a completely open agenda. You could spend days hiking around your 11 acres of hilly and junglesome land, or walk down to the beach with a 6-pack, chips and guacamole. You could go snorkeling or horseback riding, or even on a whale tour to name a few easily accessible activities. Every night we had no problem taking in a real Pacific sunset as it dipped into an ocean with no end which was essentially our front yard for the week. One night we decided to get a sunset dinner made by Chef Carlos himself (which I highly recommend, no offense to my wife’s cooking which was phenomenal as well *cough *cough) which came with the whole 9 yards of margaritas, a beautifully obscure cut of steak paired with a sauce (which my wife and I tried to replicate and came nowhere close, she is still a great cook though) that was to die for, an amazing desert, and wine, sorry I am going off about it but it was unbelievable. In the city of Lo De Marcos, you can feel welcome while amongst true locals. There was no such thing as a tourist there because everyone who came from out of town was truly accepted. The lodge itself was worth the whole stay, feeling just enough outside allowing you to enjoy the weather, with the comfort of being indoors, enjoying the beautiful views and a bed that might as well have been made out of clouds. We enjoyed many star-filled nights in the outdoor bathtub, and shared too many laughs situated in the outdoor kitchen and lounge which is also solely yours through-out your stay. The second we left was also the second we were trying to figure when we could come back.

The most private, romantic, and relaxing vacation ever. Mar al Cielo is a once in a lifetime getaway. We enjoyed long days reading in the sun, and lounging in the shady palapa. We did yoga on the cliff overlooking the ocean, and then lunched on fresh fruit smoothies straight from the jungle. We jogged the back roads into town, and then jumped into the ocean on our way home. We did long hikes along the deserted beaches, and then stopped for sunset margaritas at the beachside bar on the edge of town. We were served exquisite private organic dinners by Carlos and Jodi, and made our own tropical drinks from the fresh coconuts Raul picked for us each morning. We learned all about the birds, plants, iguanas, whales and critters in the surrounding jungle from Jodi, a consummate naturalist. We had all the solitude we could ask for, but had our amazing hosts within a quick call if we ever needed a thing. In short – Mar al Cielo was perfect!

I felt like I was in Heaven our whole stay. I walked down to the palapa and it smelled like God had sprayed cologne on the path for me. As we walked up the path a flower fell at my feet.. Butterflies were everywhere. You could hear and see many birds. What a treat! We were the only ones there. It’s an 11 acre retreat with only Jodi, Carlos & Raoul. And they only showed up when you needed them. Carlos was an excellent chef for dinner and breakfast. Raoul was so thoughtful and his attention to details was extraordinary! Jodi, what a great host! She made us feel welcome the moment we arrived. I wouldn’t change a thing except have Carlos cook more often! There are many hiking trails to experience and many beaches to explore I will not forget the day the whales showed an appearance. They were so close. No binoculars needed for some sightings. I loved the isolation of this place. Some may not like that, but I loved it. One thing to be aware of though, it is a good walk up hill to the villa from the palapa. We loved the exercise, so it was not an issue for us, but someone who has any physical disabilities may have some trouble experiencing what we did. Don’t worry about driving the road in and out. We had no troubles getting there at night, but the road is a little rough. Take your time and trust the instructions that Jodi has given and you won’t have any troubles. We can’t wait until our next visit.

It’s hard to put into the words , the beauty of this place. Your adventure starts by driving up a dirt road into the jungle. Soon you stop just before the cliffs edge . You have arrived at Mar Al Cielo where birds sing above as the ocean sings below. Your bungalow is surrounded by the jungle, the mountains and the sea offering complete privacy. But if you decide to wander , the beach is a short hike down the cliff and no will be there. For us this was a week of peace . We would like to thank Jodi and Carlos for being great hosts . If this sounds a bit magical , well it was… we hope to be back soon..

A small slice of heaven. We had a perfect week with the unobtrusive help of the property owners Jodi & Carlos. Paradise found, truly.

We spent 11 nights at Mar al Cielo Eco-Retreat and it was absolutely wonderful. As the other reviewers have noted, it was a very peaceful, secluded, relaxing retreat from our everyday lives. We were often gone during the afternoon as we had friends staying nearby however, we always tried to get back to our jungle oasis to watch the sunset from the palapas “living room”. Waking up to the sounds of the birds and going to sleep with the lights of the shrimp trawlers out on the ocean were two of my favorite parts. We were also fortunate to have a lot of whale activity right out front during our stay. Jodie and Carlos are gracious hosts and Raul was always willing to help. The property was always clean and well maintained. We enjoy making our own meals and the kitchen was well equipped to allow for this. Be sure to visit the local bakery for the buns and sweets.

My wife and I just returned from a 9 day stay at Mar al Cielo Eco-Retreat and I must say that it was one of the most sublime experiences! Imagine total quiet & serenity only interrupted by the sounds of surf, birds and warm breezes rustling the abundant palm fronds. The bedroom is so cozy and spacious just steps away from the outdoor shower and huge bathtub. (The toilet is enclosed on 3 sides but open to dense jungle views – absolutely the best:) The Palapa area is a one minute stroll – sofas, dining table, fridge, hammocks with glorious ocean views and the occasional Humpback Whale performance. It’s a short hike down to the beach which is really private – the water is so warm. Best of all, there’s a local & intimate beachfront restaurant, Kenia which is operated by a lovely guy named Lilo – fresh seafood is abundant but start off with freshly baked corn chips (served warm) with the incredibly tasty lime-seasoned salsa & guacamole.

Hated to leave but dream about our return next winter.

My husband & I just returned from a wonderful 9-night stay at Mar al Cielo. We were seeking tranquility, which is exactly what we found. Jodi & Carlos are wonderful people who take great pride in looking after both the property and their guests. From the moment we arrived at Mar al Cielo, we were completely captivated by the breathtaking ocean views — the extent and beauty of which truly cannot be captured in a photograph. We found the house to be absolutely perfect —extremely private and enchantingly tucked into a lush jungle hillside surrounded by nature and the most spectacular views of the ocean and surrounding mountains. — we very much enjoyed our time with you and are already planning our next visit!

In one sense it would seem natural to keep this extrordinary spot a secret. at the same time it seems completely wrong to deny anyone this wonderful pportunity to experience what we experienced.
they’ve done so by not creating at all but by integrating and coexisting with a pristine setting. the ablity to present a delux, comfortable and private retreat in such an uninvasive manner makes you feel like you’re in a dream. the local birds, marine life and all the flora and fauna don’t even know you’re there and you get to enjoy them like it’s the way it’s supposed to be.
thank you so much for an unforgettable stay.

After an overwhelming wedding week with friends and family, Mar Al Cielo was the PERFECT place to relax and rejuvenate. It’s a bit isolated, but in the best way: private beaches, a private screened “living room” area overlooking the water (where Jodi arranged for us to have massages), an outdoor bath tub and shower, a private drive–all with the option of room service.

We saw whales; met new, exotic birds; made friends with the local coatimundi; and went on private hikes on the property, both up the cliffs and down to the ocean.

This is the perfect romantic get-away!
