We love the abundance of space here. The clean lines and simple furnishings take a back seat to spectacular views, and there’s water everywhere, from the indoor-outdoor infinity pool to the breathtaking Pacific.
Sometimes when you hear the words ‘architect-designed’, you expect bells and whistles. In the case of this architect-designed mountaintop home on the southern tip of the Nicoya peninsula in Costa Rica, that’s almost the opposite of what you get.
This spacious two-bedroom home has simple, clean lines, acres of space, and an impressive backdrop – rainforests rolling into the Pacific coastline. Apparently you can even hear howler monkeys.
We love the way inside seamlessly flows into outside, and outside flows down the hill towards the coastline. Guests can walk straight from the living area into the infinity pool, and even lounge in partially submerged armchairs.
The inspiration is Asian, with simple, low seating, Zen garden-style exterior spaces, sculptures of the Buddha, and Balinese carved wall panels. Color is mostly left up to nature, with the timber ceiling, wooden furnishings and exterior rainforest doing most of the work.
Other features we love are the kitchen with its wraparound breakfast bar, and the bedrooms that open onto private terraces. This is a home that was built for relaxation.
Daily maid service is provided. A massage therapist is also available. Washing machine, clothes dryer, iron and board, linens and towels, safe, telephone, TV with satellite and cable, DVD player and stereo are all provided.
The house, while very private, is conveniently located within easy reach of Mal Pais. The town has a laid-back, unpopulated, small village vibe, unlike the adjacent beaches of Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen, which are two of the top surfing destinations in Costa Rica.
Old jungle grows right down to the beach in places, and volcanic deposits form curious shapes along the coast. The local marine life is protected. Rent a boat or take a fishing tour around the Nicoya Peninsula, and you may catch sight of dolphins, manta rays, sea turtles or whales.
Mal Pais is adjacent to the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, where you can take canopy tours or horse tours. And within the park is the beautiful Playa Cuevas beach, one of the area’s best snorkelling spots.
