This bold architectural home from the visionary team at hinter was designed by multi-award-winning Canadian practice Saucier+Perrotte Architectes, recipients of the 2018 Royal Architectural Institute of Canada's Gold Medal. 

Tucked into the forest near Sutton in Quebec's Eastern Townships, this is hinter's largest space yet, sleeping up to 10 guests overlooking a private lake and river. It's an indulgent space to disappear into and enjoy Canada's dramatic seasons, but if skiing's your thing, this vacation home for rent in Quebec is also close to the slopes at Sutton.

We've been following the work of hinter for some time now. The brainchild of Mauricio Padilla and Emily Padan, hinter is a collection of architectural homes in Quebec, Canada, inspired by the long hikes Padilla used to take when he was traveling the world for work, and the remarkable homes he would spot while doing so. 

Bringing that vision home to Canada, he and Emily created hinter out of a passion for architecture, design, nature and well-being, building homes in semi-remote locations that give guests some headspace or room for inspiration. They're homes that go beyond carbon neutral, with trees planted for every stay booked and partnerships formed with eco-friendly businesses who provide biodegradable, refillable and sustainable products for each residence. 

The hideout is the newest addition to their collection and the largest dwelling to date, an intriguingly shaped home that sits like a giant puzzle among the trees overlooking the rushing river. Almost monolithic at first glance, its black wood panels give way to walls of glass that drop down through three tiers as the house descends the hillside. 

In contrast to the dark exterior walls, the large windows create bright, wide-open interiors that are minimally furnished, making room for the trees to become part of the design. We love the living/dining room with its large slouchy bottle green sofa, dramatic woodburning stove, and mezzanine floor that slices through the double-height space, as well as the bedrooms with their freestanding baths, again overlooking the trees (giving a whole new meaning to forest bathing). 

This is a 3,500sqft space with two large and three small bedrooms, two full bathrooms, a generously sized kitchen, a yoga/meditation room, a powder room, a reading room, and access to a five-acre forest, private river and small lake. Sleeping up to seven adults, or four adults and six children, it's perfect for families, friend gatherings or small retreats.

AROUND

This vacation home for rent in Quebec is located about one hour southeast of Montreal, near Sutton (5km) in the Eastern Townships. This part of the province is known for its great farm-to-table food, vineyards, spas, and outdoor activities. In fact, Sutton ski resort is 12 minutes from the house by car, making this a great location year round.

Having said that, there's plenty to do if you stay home. With five acres of pristine forest, a small river next to the house and a lake that's perfect for cooling down in the summer, you don't have to venture very far. But if you, there are mountains and trails aplenty for hiking, biking and skiing. Alternatively, book a day out at Balnea Spa; all bookings receive 20% off the thermal experience or 15% off a massage.
