Description

Romantic 1-bedroom, 1-bath cottage set on a bluff overlooking the ocean and Margaree Island in scenic Cape Breton. The cottage is designed with an eye to the Maritime. A vaulted 27-foot cathedral ceiling and two whole walls of windows give the cottage a spacious airy feel, as well as spectacular views and exposure to ocean breezes. The floor is made of 150-year-old pine, and the walls finished with traditional horizontal boards and fresh white paint.

The interior of the cottage is fully furnished and has a wood-burning stove and electric heating for cooler months. An outdoor deck is the perfect place to watch the whales that pass by from time to time.

The cottage is located within five minutes of a large beach.  You can see fishers and lobster boats haul in their daily catch in front of the cottage, and buy their catch at nearby Margaree Harbor.  The house is not visible from the road, ensuring total privacy.  The area has plenty of natural amenities to enjoy, ranging from miles of biking trails, to fly fishing for salmon in the Margaree River, to exploring nearby  Chimney Corner Beach and Cove.  There are also lots of cultural activities and local celtic music to enjoy at restaurants, pubs and concerts.

    R&R with a view…
When looking for a place to go for our first family vacation (with a 4 month old baby) we came across Stewarts property and fell in love. Originally we were only going to do a weekend get away but the cottage only rents weekly. But so glad we decided to go for the week.

Stewart was great at responding to emails back and forth. He gave us great directions to cottage (very scenic drive). The moment we parked the car and walked to the cottage we were amazed at the spectacular view. The cottage its self was very clean and had all our basic needs we needed for the week.
The next day we met up with Stewart. He gave us a very detailed review of the area. Places to go, sites to see and restaurants to eat at. We didn’t have any planned itinerary going to this place but our week was filled with things Stewart suggested. It is a nice and private area. Has a beautiful beach below with minimal tourists. Cottage is a close drive to all the different towns leading up to the Cabot Trail. Has incredible non obstructive views of the sunrise and sunset.
We definitely would recommend staying here and we would love to come back in the future. Thank you so much for your hospitality Stewart. If any of our friends and family decided visit Nova Scotia we will highly recommend this place.

Stunning ocean view with a sunset that is second to none, SeaSky does not disappoint!
SeaSky cottage was as advertised. Upon arrival we were taken aback at the breath-taking view and privacy that this cottage offered. The inside was perfect for our little family of four. The open concept and loft bedroom above were the perfect mix of cozy and practical. The cottage was perfectly clean, well-kept and decorated wonderfully.

Stewart’s visit on the first day was an essential part of our trip. Every suggestion he made, whether it be a great restaurant, terrific hike, or neat shop/boutique, his local knowledge of the area was perfect to give our family the authentic Cape Breton experience.
SeaSky cottage will forever hold a place near and dear in our hearts and we hope one day our travels will return us to this little piece of paradise.

Amazing! Lifetime memories made here :)
We just returned from a 1 week stay at this lovely little cottage and we can’t say enough about how amazing it was! To wake up everyday to this stunning ocean view, wow, what a treat! We enjoyed the most magical sunsets and created beautiful memories with our family. Our hosts, Stewart and Bell were super informative and helped us find our way around by giving us perfect “insider” pointers of where to eat & play. We’ve only been home for a few days but we’re already dreaming of when we can go back next!!

Outstanding place to stay in Cape Breton!
This is the second year we have stayed for two weeks at one of these cottages at Chimney Corner. Like last year we thought it was an exceptional vacation and we have booked it again for two weeks next year. The location is amazing and the cottage is very well designed and outfitted. The owners have gone out of their way to create vacation units that meet and exceed all expectations.

    Unspoiled and Stunning!
We wanted a vacation that was quiet, calm and peaceful – an escape from the noise of life. Thank you Stewart and Bell for providing a beautifully stunning setting in which to relax and recharge. Having worked for a high-end hotel company for more than 10 years, I have an expectation about the quality of lodging. Most important for me is that my accommodations are clean. These cottages are spotless. Stewart and Bell go out of their way to make sure their guests feel comfortable and Stewart spends time with all his guests when they arrive to make sure they get settled.

The cottages ooze charm and have everything you need all nestled on the breathtaking cliffs of Chimney Corner. Cape Breton is unspoiled and stunning, and these cottages are the perfect way to soak it all in.
Thank you both for a wonderful vacation! See you next year.

My new favorite spot on earth!
We had a lovely week, perched on the cliff, soaking up the spectacular beauty surrounding this cottage. While cozy, it was plenty of space for 2 adults and 2 youngish children. Stewart was so kind and helpful in suggesting hikes, shops, music, restaurants and hidden gems all within a short drive of the cottage. We felt we had a secret map to all the best places in Cape Breton and it helped us make the most of our time. Chimney Corner beach was only a 5 min drive (or 20 min walk) and we spent many, many hours enjoying the crystal clear, shallow waters — even saw crabs and lobsters! We can’t wait to come back. Just hope the secret doesn’t get out!

We arrived at night and settled into our cottage. Our host Stewart, left us a note welcoming us and had Willie Nelson playing on the stereo. The warmth of the wood and soft lighting made us immediately feel at home and we agreed the next 7 days were going to be special.

In the morning we were astonished by the perspective of the wide endless horizon. The eastern sunrise and strategically placed westward facing wall of windows allows you to see the Gulf of St. Lawrence at first light and more impressively at sunset. Everyday we saw Eagles flying along the coast or perched on the rocks above the beach in sight. Bring binoculars!

Stewart makes a point to meet each and every guest and offer the history of his property and give general (and much appreciated) advice on your stay there.

We love to explore, so our days were mostly spent crisscrossing the Island by car, but every afternoon we made a point to return and revel in the beauty of the sunset on the deck (with wine!). The property is well maintained and privacy is respected throughout your stay, though we thoroughly enjoyed our chance meetings with Stewart and his dog.

If you want to get the full experience and really understand what life is like here I recommend you take Stewart’s advice on the places to go and things to see. We were able to see much of the island, but made a point of leaving several things untouched for our future returns.

Cape Breton Island is a place that captures your soul and invites you to stay, slow down, and recognize what’s missing in our fast paced, virtual lives. We highly recommend you stay here or at any of their cottages on the property and settle in, make yourself at home, and enjoy the Island the way you should. The property is breathtaking and you won’t regret the experience.

I am convinced that Stewart’s little cottage is the most beautiful and picturesque place that I’ve ever been. It is seriously even better than the pictures. Stewart was a caring and gracious host and showed us all the best places on the island to go to. But it really didn’t matter whether we were going to see traditional Cape Breton music, eating out at a local pub, or staying in with a glass of wine, everything was absolutely perfect. I could not get enough of looking out of the cabin on all sides and seeing the ocean waves. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a beautiful getaway, but I’d just ask to please not book it when I’m planning to return, because it will definitely be soon.

My sister and I spent a lovely week at the Cottage by the Ocean. After a rather long day of traveling, Stewart came by to welcome us and give us some great ideas for touring the area…but first, I must say how beautiful our spot was…an aerie with incredible views of Cape Breton…we saw an eagle several times at eye level…it was so hard to tear ourselves away from this charming cottage (which is rustic, but delightfully so…the beds are very comfortable and the view is spectacular.) We managed to find the Cabot Trail a few miles down the road, and from there, the lobster pound in Cape Margaree…yumm. ….We loved everything about Chimney Corner and environs and we loved the people we met.

    Lovely!
My sister and I spent a lovely week at Sea Sky. Along the Trail we found hikes, fabulous views comparable to Big Sur, Pleasant Bay with Captain Mark’s Whale Watch zodiac tours (we saw pods of whales, seals, eagles…it was delightful.) We drove to Inverness and walked along the boardwalk that ran between the sea and Cabot Links golf course…wonderful, and then happened to catch fiddlers playing in front of a local store. Went to the Normaway Inn for a ceilidh. We loved everything about Chimney Corner and environs and we loved the people we met.

We very much enjoyed our week-long stay at Contemporary Cottage by the Ocean. It was the perfect location for a weeklong stay on Cape Breton. The view is even better than pictured and the sunsets are a real treat after a long day of hiking. I wish we’d had more time to spend at nearby Chimney Corner Beach, but we were usually out and about finding a spectacular new adventure each day. Stewart was very generous with his time and insights on the many things to do on Cape B from hikes to restaurants to wildlife, which made our experience that much better. The cottage was a lovely, rustic escape from our usual hectic routine, and we would not hesitate to return!

Finishing our week stay at Contemporary Cottage by the Ocean. For our family of four, this was the perfect getaway. The cottage is everything we needed, and none more. An impeccably designed cottage, it was fun to arrive at and come back to each day. Perfectly imperfect – beach casual with just the right touches of relevant folk art and island whimsy. Deck overlooked the ocean and the adjacent beach; spent mornings watching bald eagles in the morning sun’s glow and evenings amazed by the starry sky. Inside, the open kitchen/ living space was comfortable and just the right amount of space. The loft bedroom was bright and maintained a refreshing breeze off the water. The area was fun to explore as well – one week was just enough to see various parts of the island, taking in the french/irish/scottish culture along the way, while balancing some quality down-time in this quiet space. The beach down the road was a hit with all of us; the kids loved exploring the rocky shore, chasing lobsters, and swimming in the very gradual-depth water. I’d highly recommend the Contemporary Cottage by the Ocean to anyone looking for a quiet, comfortable, inspiring, close-to-nature getaway

One of the few places we’ve stayed that was even more beautiful than the already beautiful pictures. The house was so comfortable that we found ourselves almost hoping for bad weather so that we would have an excuse not to leave. The deck provided expansive views of the water and the sunsets were stunning.
The nearby beach was perfect for our four-year old daughter (and us adults); lots of sand, generally calm, shallow water — which wasn’t as cold as I would have expected — and nice for swimming. Also easy driving distance to the Highlands National park. Stewart was very responsive to our requests and very helpful with guiding us to the local attractions and getting us settled.
I would definitely recommend to anyone seeking a quiet, low-key vacation in a beautiful setting. It’s a place that I truly hope we can return to again.

To say that this little cottage is charming, welcoming, and perfectly placed in the quiet heart of Margaree would be an understatement. My brother and I had the privilege of spending a week here this past summer, and I can honestly say I have never had a more enjoyable, more perfect vacation experience. The cottage itself, tucked away on a quiet hilltop, exceeded our expectations. It was warm and inviting – giving us a sense of home despite our being 3,000 miles away. The upstairs loft provided the perfect place for restful, peaceful nights beneath the stars, and cozy naps during the day. I love to cook, and the kitchen proved to be more than up to the task of a little Texas cooking. It’s obvious that the owners, Stewart and Bell, have made it a priority to maintain this property, and I have to say, they do a brilliant job of it. In addition, I say with great certainty that you will not find two more gracious, more welcoming, and more kind hosts than Stewart and Bell. Stewart made it a point to welcome us, and make us feel at home. He was incredibly understanding and accommodating – two features that were an absolute blessing. I highly recommend that you let him walk you through the map of the island. After listening to live music and eating excellent food at the Red Shoe Pub, or grabbing lunch and a pastry at the local Dancing Goat, you won’t regret this decision at all! For those wishing for a little quiet and relaxation, the true gem of staying at Chimney Corner is the beautiful beach located just down the road. My brother and I spent every day down on the quiet stretch of sand in our little cove. It’s a short two minute drive to the entrance, or in my brother’s case, the perfect end point on the return from his morning run. You’ll love the cool, crystal clear water, climbing the rocks up the hill, and the abundance of crustaceans you’ll find scurrying along the ocean floor. If I haven’t expressed my enjoyment enough at this point, allow me to say this – You won’t find a sweeter, more intimate and peaceful vacation spot than this. An absolute gem in the heart of Margaree Harbor, and perhaps one of my favorite places on earth. Once you walk up to the top of that hill and overlook the ocean below, you’ll realize this place is worth every penny. And if you listen hard enough, you might just hear Stewart at the top of that same hill saying, “Welcome home.”

    “Living the Dream”
This was a once in a lifetime vacation for my wife and me, a celebration of our having mutually turned 60 this past year. She’d been to Cape Breton for the Celtic Colors music festival, and her dream was to get me up here. She found this cottage on line, and we never looked back!
Stewart and Bell are gracious and quiet hosts, living right next door where they’re able to pop over if there’s a problem, but very sensitive about not being omnipresent! They had some great tips on where to go and what to do, and their description of the cottage was absolutely accurate. It is a joy to live in, with panoramic window views of the ocean vista (and yes, we saw whales!), a nearby beach frequented primarily by local folks, modern appliances, very hot water, and comfortable seating and sleeping accommodations. And what a joy to have Wi-Fi so we could keep in touch with our children back home!
This place is private, with no traffic to interfere with sleep, no jetskis, and consequently, it’s a bit of a trip to get to a grocery or gas station. But that seems to be true for the entire island, and certainly didn’t stop us from fully enjoying the national park and a variety of local beaches for rock hunting. We found a plethora of very good restaurants, and you should be sure to ask Stewart for directions to the Normaway Inn for their weekly concerts in The Barn!
By the way, this house was written up in the Canadian version of Better Homes and Gardens in 1998, and we found that seemingly anywhere we were on the island, we no more had to mention Stewart and Bell’s name to find that they were known and liked by all. That’s helpful when you’re making reservations or just trying to meet local people.

After reading the many glowing reviews for this special place it’s difficult to add to the superlatives. Stewart and Bell.(..and Ryder) deserve first accolades. In similar circumstances you would be pleased just to have convivial and attentive hosts doing all the right things. In this case it quickly be came apparent that we were confronted with new friendships. It’s hard to explain why people connect but sometimes they just do – and this was one of those times. By the end of our two weeks we felt that we had established some sort of beach head in Cape Breton and could no longer be considered mere tourists. Things will never be quite the same.
Much has been said by others of the natural beauty of Chimney Point, the simple yet elegant architectural sophistication of the cabin and the many splendours of Cape Breton. It is difficult to add to these endorsements yet perhaps we can say that the Celtic culture provided a particularly comforting ambiance given our own Scottish heritage and love of music. The Barn at the Normway, the Red Shoe Pub and many other venues offer superb entertainment in intimate surroundings where you almost feel part of a family gathering. Next time I will definitely have to bring my bagpipes and get measured for a kilt!
….and by the way, if you are a golf nut don’t overlook the newly minted Cabot Links course at Inverness. We found the splendid landscape home to two baby foxen. (I’m not sure of the plural for “fox” – ox vs. oxen?). No doubt this will become a ‘must play’ destination for the true aficionado.
All-in-all we would like to add one more star to this review and give Stewart and Bell a big six!
