What we like about this property

We love a cottage by the sea, and this cabin rental in Nova Scotia is located in a place of spectacular beauty and privilege. Exceptionally charming and full of authentic character, you’re within minutes of the famous Cabot Trail and all the natural beauty of Cape Breton Island.

Description

Perched on a cliff in complete seclusion overlooking Chimney Corner Beach and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, this cabin rental in Nova Scotia is situated near the renown Cabot Trail surrounded by over 130 acres of wooded forest and windswept highlands.

The traditional coastal design mimics the maritime architecture of the region with shingle and clapboard construction that maintains the historical Cape Breton style.

Designed and built by artists and native Canadians, the house was a labor of love that reflects their appreciation for the area, its culture, history and traditions. Charming and comfortable, the interiors are decorated with rustic contemporary  furnishings and decor with two cozy bedrooms that sleep up to three guests comfortably.

The outside of the cottage is just as stunning as the inside with a veranda boasting wall-to-wall, eight-foot-high windows and an exterior deck positioned perfectly to spot lobster boats, eagles, moose, bobcats, and whales passing by most of the year, not to mention some of the most dramatic sunsets and panoramic views.

A world of natural beauty is at your doorstep, from the warm sands of Chimney Corner beach, to the world-renowned Margaree river (great for salmon and trout fishing) to a mature hardwood forest to explore.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Broadband internet access, land line telephone, stereo and music library, books,  and local guide/maps, climate control (AC/heat). Weekly housekeeping and linen change included for stays longer than a week.

AROUND

Located at the eastern end of Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island lies along the Gulf of St. Lawrence where the famous Cabot Trail roadway encircles the island. Passing through rugged coastline and forests and along the edges of Cape Breton Highlands National Park, the road takes you through spectacular scenic beauty. Less than thirty minutes north, the park has an extensive network of hiking trails including the Skyline Trail that overlooks the gulf, as well as dramatic waterfalls, rivers and highlands. Both the fabulous beach and bluffs of Whale Cove and the beaches and lighthouse of Margaree Harbor are within a few minutes drive, while the beach nearest the cottage is ideal for swimming in warm months. Head south down the dramatically beautiful Broad Cove Road on the way to the town of Inverness, with it’s great pubs and cafes as well as a local music and arts and crafts scene.  With its mix of Celtic, Acadian and Native cultures, the island has a rich history and unique traditions with various music and cultural festivals throughout the year.  A breeding ground for migratory whales, the area is also home to a diverse and abundant array of wildlife.

My Cape Breton home away from home…
We just spent 9 days in the Deep Blue Sea Cottage and absolutely loved every minute of it!! Waking up to that gorgeous view and having my first coffee on the deck started everyday off right! The house was extremely well equipped, had lots of skylights, heated bathroom floors, was cozy and felt like home. Stewart, the owner, was very helpful spending time with us, marking up maps, informing us about the island, places not to miss, where to find things, where to hike and kayak and where to get the best food…..He made it very easy to immediately fall in love with Cape Breton!!! It was also an added bonus that the Cape Breton’s fall colors were unbelievably brilliant and stunning that week! We will definitely be back and we have already recommended Stewart and Bell’s houses to friends.

    Incredible anniversary week!
The view from this house is stunning. It was hard to leave the deck each day especially with bald eagles and whales visiting the cove below. But we couldn’t let Stewart’s extensive list of things to see go to waste so managed to drag ourselves away each day. His suggestions were spot on. A few of our favorite excursions were fly fishing in the Margaree River with guide Jimmie Pedersen, sampling and shopping at the Mabou Farmer’s Market, hiking in C.B. Highlands National Park, the Alexander Graham Bell museum, and of course driving the incredible Cabot Trail. Our best lunches were at the Dancing Goat, the Red Shoe Pub and the Coastal Restaurant in Ingonish. We prepared most of our dinners at the cottage so we wouldn’t miss the amazing sunsets. With the wood stove blazing and music playing, we had a lot of fun cooking in the perfectly stocked little kitchen. And it was so easy to fall asleep in the comfy loft with hundreds of stars shining through the skylight. We would love to return to this romantic getaway. One week was not enough!

A wonderful way to explore the Cabot Trail!
This was our family’s first visit to the East coast. We knew we wanted to explore the Cabot Trail, but have to admit we chose this location because of the photos we saw online of the ‘Deep Blue Sea Cottage’. Well, we were not disappointed!! It was everything we hoped for and more. The cottage was beautiful, and fully equipped.

The owner, Stewart, went out of his way to greet us upon our arrival and spent over two hours familiarizing us with the immediate area and entire Cabot Trail. He pointed out the best beaches, boardwalks, restaurants and highlights not to be missed. The time spent with us made all the difference and enhanced our Cape Breton experience. We visited the Dancing Goat many times, walked the beach and boardwalk at Inverness and hiked the trail at White Point just to name a few.
\Where ever the day took us, we were sure to be back at the cottage to enjoy the dramatic sunset each night from our oceanside deck.
It was the perfect balance of exploration and relaxation. Thank you Stewart and Bell for your hospitality and sharing your place with us.

Truly Incredible – Exceeded our Expectations!
Our stay at this cottage was one of the best vacation stays we have ever had. The cottage itself is clean and well furnished. Everything works and is aesthetically pleasing. The views are indeed incredible. The cottage has a wonderful deck that ensures complete enjoyment of the vista. My wife, my son and I felt not only at home there but…blessed – there is no other word.

Stewart the owner lives nearby and is very attentive. As a matter of fact, shortly after our arrival he spent time with us not only to explain the ins and outs of the cottage, but also to give us some great tips about spending our time on Cape Breton Island. He knows what he’s talking about! We followed many of his suggestions and they did not disappoint.

This was our first trip to Cape Breton Island and we are sold on this gorgeous place and look forward to returning to Deep Blue Sea!

  • The cottage was perfect and we enjoyed privacy and cosiness for a week in this beautifull surrounding. Stewart introduced us to the secrets of Cape Breton and we loved it. Hiking on the Skyline Trail and a Fidler Concert at the Normaway Inn were just two great experiences. The most impressive reminder will be the view at sunset – just dreaming…

    Feels like home…
This was our second stay at Deep Blue Sea Cottage and it felt like coming home. We spent our days hiking and biking in the area and our evenings soaking up the amazing view from the patio that never gets old. Stewart, as always, was very helpful with suggestions on where to go and what to do. One week never seems like long enough!

Lovely cottage with great views and privacy!

This is a beautiful place on the west coast of Cape Breton. Secluded and private, but with easy access to all the lovely places Stuart (the owner) will tell you about. I loved the cottage, with the well equipped kitchen, wonderful sleeping loft, enclosed sun room, and outside deck. I was so happy to have two wonderful weeks here and hope to come back sometime.

June, 2016 Our week here at Coastal Cottage was amazing. We came to Cape Breton for our honeymoon and were excited to be staying in a secluded tiny house that overlooked the ocean. Stewart did a great job with the house layout, the decor and of course the view! It was the perfect home base for day trips to go hiking, sea kayaking and exploring the Acadian culture. We came at the perfect time of year to watch the lobster boats from our deck in the morning. And at night we watched the storms roll in from the sun room. We would stay at this house forever if we could!

June 2015 If you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature, this is it. We celebrated our anniversary here and enjoyed every minute in Cape Breton. Stewart was a wonderful host and gave us tips on things to see which we may not have done otherwise. The cottage was cozy, comfortable, clean, and well furnished. We made sure we we arrived back at the cottage every evening in time to sit on the deck and witness the most beautiful sunsets we’ve ever seen. The hiking was fantastic in the national park. It was one of the best weeks of our lives and we would definitely return to the Coastal Cottage. If you are looking for a romantic place to disconnect from the busy world and connect with nature, this is it!

It was perfect!! From the bottle of wine and cookies left as a welcoming gift by the owner, to the perfect weather, beautiful sunsets, whales feeding in the ocean in the morning and the privacy. This cottage was exactly what I wanted. It is quite simple/rustic inside but the appliances were all new and the place was super clean and had everything we needed. I loved everything about this cottage and would recommend it for a couple or family with one child. We loved the location and spent a lot of time going between various Celeidhs. We ate at the Golf course in Inverness which was excellent, had a couple meals at the Red Shoe Pub in Mabou, loved the beaches in Inverness and Port Hood. We will definately go back!!!

My husband and I stumbled upon this cottage while it was still being built. Immediately, we emailed Stewart and chose to book it for our 2 week honeymoon…before we even chose our wedding date! There was something that drew us to this place and it couldn’t have been more true when we finally stepped foot here in person some months later. We immediately fell in love, not only with the cottage, but the entire area.

The cottage: Even up to our very last night, we would arrive back to the cottage after a day at the beach or exploring the nearby sights, and just say, “Wow”. The view never gets old and it is truly spectacular. The cottage itself is also bright, clean, and spacious for it’s intimate coziness. Absolutely perfect for a couple, although there is a small bedroom with a twin bed that would accommodate a child perfectly. It is also secluded high up on the hill allowing you to truly “get away”. The deck was one of our favorite parts, enjoying a glass of wine or a beer and watching the sunsets never got old. There is also a grill and you couldn’t ask for a more beautiful spot to barbecue!

The area: In 2 weeks, we never felt like we didn’t have anything to do. This place offers the perfect blend of relaxation and action. The Chimney Corner beach, which is about 1/2 a mile down the road, is one of the prettiest beaches we have ever seen. We could have been perfectly happy spending every day there! We were also so surprised to find how warm the water is! On days we didn’t go to the beach we explored the Cabot Trail, went whale watching, saw giant moose, fly-fished on the Margaree River, and attended a fiddle concert and square dance, plus lots more! Not to mention all the delicious places to eat out and the breathtaking views that surround the entire area. Each view is more amazing than the next!

The hosts: Stewart and Bell are two of the most welcoming and kind people you could ever meet. They are so much more than hosts, they are true ambassadors of Cape Breton. On our first night Stewart gave us a very detailed account of everything to do around. We took all his advice and couldn’t have been happier with everything! Both he and Bell made us feel so comfortable and truly helped make our experience up here so positive.

In summary, this cottage and Cape Breton are worth the trek. We had an incredible vacation here and are already planning our return trip here next summer :)

Cozy, well-appointed cottage, on the spectacular Cape Breton Island coast. Great sunroom and deck with an even greater view. Large queen bed in the loft with comfy single downstairs. Lots of hooks to hang things and storage. Well supplied kitchen with propane grill outside for those grilled steak dinners. Stewart was extremely helpful and provided valuable information on the local area which greatly enhanced our stay. Don’t miss the Barn for music and square dancing at the Normaway Inn in the Margaree Valley or the Coal Miners Cafe in Inverness for a great meal. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend to anyone wanting a quiet, secluded getaway.

Coastal Cottage is nestled high in the trees overlooking the most breathtaking panoramic views of the western Cape Breton coastline. From the moment we pulled up next to the cottage we were taken by the ever changing sights and sounds. For us, it was the perfect mix of being nestled in amongst the rustling leaves and woodland birds but at the same time with a wide open vista of blue ocean. The cottage was charming, impeccably clean and provided all the necessities for a comfortable stay. No matter the weather we were cosy and content. This is a special place and we look forward to returning next year.

My husband and I recently celebrated our 20th anniversary at Coastal Cottage and we could not have been happier with our stay. We were the cottage’s first tenants and felt very lucky to be there. The cottage is located high up on a hill overlooking the west coast of Cape Breton, and the view is spectacular! The cottage itself is small and cozy, but was perfect for two people. It’s well laid out — great use of limited space — and has some nice details, e.g., heated bathroom floors, nice linens, great photographs on the walls. The kitchen is well equipped, and even had a couple of good knives. The deck is a great place to watch the sunset or just relax and take in the view, and if the weather isn’t cooperating (or the bugs are biting) there is a lovely sunroom with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on the ocean. The location is great — close to the Cabot Trail and easy access to the national park, and there are also several nice small towns nearby — and what looked like lovely swimming beaches, although it was too cold to swim when we were there. Stewart stopped by the night we arrived and gave us lots of information and suggestions of things to do and see in the area, several of which we did during our short stay. I would highly recommend Deep Blue Sea Cottage, and hope to return there someday.
