What we like about this property

Imagine a prehistoric pop art cave – part Barbarella, part Sixties love pad and part Flintstones. If you can. If you can’t, you’re in luck. Someone else has done it for you…

Description

We love it when people think outside the box. This wonderful house in the coastal town of Essaoira is, however, a great example of taking the box and smashing it to smithereens.

A four-bedroom villa at the back of the town’s fortified medina near Bab Doukkala, it’s perfect for pleasure seekers, located as it is right beside the food quarter and minutes from the beach. Having said that, with a house like this, you may not want to venture out at all. It would be easy to spend an entire week taking selfies in different nooks and crannies.

The designer has taken the 200-year-old sandstone columns and thuya wood ceilings of this traditional Jewish house, and added whitewash with stone and driftwood accents. Sixties furnishings and colored lighting have been added to create a whimsical cave that is at once futuristic and prehistoric. Don’t be surprised when you turn a corner and see a wall of skulls or a giant birdcage suspended as a light fitting. The chairs are pretty cool too – one is a vivid African-print armchair, and another is made from animal tusks.

The house is split into four levels and built around a central courtyard. It accommodates up to eight people, but if you’re travelling with that many you may end up fighting over which of the bedrooms you get to sleep in. The first floor has a kitchen/diner with living space and one bedroom with en-suite shower. The second floor has two bedrooms and outdoor space with a large terrace and beautiful beaded hammock. At the very top is a final bedroom with private terrace – complete with the piece de resistance, a pink polka dot pig.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Guests staying a week receive free Moroccan slippers to take home. A Moroccan feast is available on request – at extra charge.

AROUND

Essaouira is southern Morocco’s favorite beach town, and is located within a few hours of Marrakech. Unlike the big city, Essaouira is laid-back and timeless with sandy-colored ramparts, whitewashed avenues, French-style piazzas, and a port full of azure blue fishing boats.

The guest house’s owner greets each visitor personally and starts their stay with a guided tour of the locality. An information booklet with a restaurant guide, information on Hammams, quad biking, horse riding and other activities is available at the house.

LOCATION

Essaouira, Morocco. Transfers can be arranged to and from Marrakech, which is approximately two and a half hours drive away. There is a small airport five miles from the town that has regular flights to and from Paris-Orly and Casablanca.

Highly recommend this stylish but comfortable home. Dar Beida is inside the Medina close to all the action in a wonderful part of Morocco. Emma had all the inside knowledge and had some wonderful suggestions for excursions, food, hamman’s and shopping. Our favorite excursion was with Mohammed and his family, such a special day. This spot is not to be missed. I’m pretty sure we will return one day!! Thank you Emma.

We were a group of eight, staying at Dar Beida (two families of four) and it worked perfectly. The house is spacious with lots of chill out areas. It got a little chilly in the evening but we got the fires lit and enjoyed some music and home comforts. Emma is a great host, with amazing energy and enthusiasm. She is full of local knowledge and suggestions of where to eat, shop and explore. Amina, the lady who cleans daily, is also an amazing cook and prepared a great feast for us the evening we arrived. The house is very well located within the Médina and it is easy to shop for local produce. We also went on a great excursion, hosted by Mohammed and his family. An experience we will never forget. Amazing, warm hosts. Highly recommended.

Dar Emma was just it. We, a family of three with a seven year old son, felt at home as soon as we arrived and loved every minute in it. It‘s beautiful and very tasteful in a sweet and understated way. The house is part of a very friendly neighborhood yet totally private. Can’t beat relaxing on the beautifully decorated roof terrace or falling asleep listening to the waves and the wind.
Emma herself is great host. Communication is super easy and she gave us a great introduction to Essaouira when we arrived. She Continued to help us arranging activities during our stay (riding, brunch outside of Essaouira). We’ll definitely hope to be back some time soon and recommend Dar Emma highly.

Dar Emma was perfect! It was complete heaven having such a nice base to explore Essouaira from. Emma and Mohammed couldn’t have been more helpful at pointing out great places to eat and wonderful things to do. House is very comfy and cosy/ beautifully decorated and has everything you need. Ameena cooked for us the first night we arrived – totally delicious. Can’t wait to come back. Thank you.

It was an absolute pleasure to stay in Dar Beida during our week long stay in Essouaira. Beautifully presented, clean and quiet house in a great area of the medina. Crisp sheets, fresh towels, amazing showers and the outside areas and views were perfect for us. We had the whole house to ourselves.

Emma had made sure we knew all of the great places to go during our trip had reccommended a large range of amazing tours (we went for a few of them!) They’re listed on Emma’s website castlesinthesand.com and had arranged us to meet Mohamed, who had arranged wine for our stay, showed us around the medina told us about the history, the best places to eat, buy good meat, fish (i recommend the fish market where you choose your fish and they fillet/cook it for you to eat), mint and spices and where to get great Hammam (we went and it was amazing) and where we could go for an evening of top end live music.

Amina, the house cleaner was so lovely, Emma had also arranged her to cook us an authentic meal for our first night at the house, we had a chicken tagine to die for! Amina brought it around cooked and ready to eat and set up the table and dishes out for us.

If you want luxury and an all round amazing stay from start to finish Dar Beida is the place to go.

Thank you Emma, you helped make our trip a perfect one! We will be back!

Stylish, clean, inspiring and perfectly located. Dar Beida was the perfect homebase for a stay in Essaouira. The interior is so thoughtfully and imaginatively appointed we felt like we were in a set from the coolest magazine on earth. The rooms were comfortable and clean, the round fireplaces built into the walls, like glowing pregnant bellies, warmed and cheered us during our stay, the kitchen was well appointed and so fun to cook in, the terrace was so relaxing and private amid the bustle of the winding medina streets below. The decor is thoughtfully original; you could spend hours moving from object to object or book to book.

We loved the location as well. It’s amazing to walk down these streets, where life seems to continue as it has for ages, duck into an alleyway and turn the key in the ancient door, then step inside to Dar Beida and its homey comfort.

The stay is accompanied by the wisdom of the incomparable Emma and all of her recommendations and suggestions from decades in Essaouira. DO ask Amina to cook you a tagine (unbelievably tasty) and DO have Mohammad take you for a visit to the Wednesday Souk… Emma’s suggestions were absolutely perfect.

Hot tip: If you plan to cook in the house Emma can arrange a delivery of a basket of the most beautiful and tasty organic vegetables from Khalid’s farm close by. We visited the farm and he is a remarkable man doing wonderful work. He’s really a pioneer in this region for clean growing, and it was inspiring to meet him and eat his food.

I have been slow in writing this review because we were so completely overwhelmed by our stay at Dar Beida and I was at a loss for words to adequately describe how utterly wonderful and amazing it was!! The house is fantastic: sensitively restored maintaining it’s history but still quirky, full of interesting surprises, nooks and crannies to explore, comfortable, perfect location, fabulous roof terrace, audio books for the kids… I could go on and on. But what really stood out was the unfaltering service and support we got from Emma, who is – and this in no word of a lie – the best host ever. From organising with the house keeper Amina to deliver a delicious home cooked Moroccan meal on our arrival, to tips on where to go in the souk for the best deals and where to buy your fresh fish in the market, she went well above and beyond to make our stay memorable. Her input included introducing us to an amazing cooking school where the whole family learnt how to make a proper moroccan tagine, to organising an amazing day trip to a waterfall complete with camel rides and berber picnic. Essaouira is a wonderfully laid back fishing port, well worth a visit…and if you are going there, Dar Beida is the place to stay and Emma is the host to have. We loved every minute!! I’m dreaming up excuses to book my next trip there…

Discovering the delights of Dar Beida and Essaouira was the perfect start to 2018. Essaouira was a joy and staying in Dar Beida was the icing on the cake. Loved its quirkiness, its tranquility and its terrace for January siestas. Thank you Emma – your recommendations were spot on. The cookery course was a triumph – A must do. Nights in lighting fires, listening to a great music selection and playing backgammon became rituals that we shall miss. I wouldn’t hesitate recommending Dar Beida. We’ll be back!

Apart from Dar Beida being a total delight to stay in with its mix or stunning authentic Moroccan architecture and the owner’s flawless eclectic taste for 60’s furniture and generally lovely things. Amina who is the best cook in all of Morocco who exclusively brings dinner to the house made it difficult to step outside for food. All of Emma’s suggested activities were fantastic giving a mix of luxury and real insight to the Moroccan way of life. I could not recommend a trip here highly enough – I’ve already booked my return.

Dar Beida is a beautifully designed and decorated home, with recognition and press well-deserved. We enjoyed a lot of time on the terrace during the day and by the fireplace at night, super cozy. Internet was also fast and reliable, which was important for us as we were working during our stay.

The home is conveniently tucked away down a side street off of the main market road. Just outside the door are a couple of small shops for water, snacks, and other essentials too. It’s a nice area filled with locals, and great way to get to know the town.

Graham and Emma were excellent hosts, incredibly responsive and full of great recommendations. Highly recommend staying here! Oh, and have dinner prepared by Amina, it’s excellent.

A beautiful house set right in the Medina so excellently placed for restaurants, shops, local sites and just 10 min from the beach. So right in the heart of the town but couldn’t feel safer. The owner is a fantastic and discrete host, always on hand to book trips, help you get to and from the airport and generally make the most of your visit but never intrusive. I have recommended to all my friends.

  • Grainne, November 4, 2017

An unforgettable experience, Dar Beida is the most amazing, comfortable and ‘cool’ house in a great location, easy to walk to the numerous restaurants, beach and the souk! Emma couldn’t have been more helpful, she organised a great welcome for us, a tour around the Medina to get our bearings and Mohamad showed us where to find the Hamman/Spa, cafes (for breakfast) and all other useful locations. Taxis organised to and from Marrakech, nothing was too much trouble.

An absolute must is the Bedouin Experience day with Mohamad, he is most charming and delightful and a great cook. The beach is breathtakingly beautiful and a walk to the waterfalls via the sand dunes made the most perfect day.

It is also well worth the visit to the Berber Souk, you will not experience anything quite like this!

 You will not be disappointed.

FANTASTIC!!! Dar Emma could not have been more perfect for my first experience of Essaouira & Morocco!! The house is beautiful and just perfect for giving a real Moroccan feel. The location was ideal in The Medina. We couldn’t have asked for more from Emma W who’s communication with regards to arrangements and recommendations was so helpful and made the holiday even more enjoyable. I have absolutely fallen in love with the house and Essaouira. I can’t wait to return!!

Perfect Place to Stay. The location is great, the house is fantastic and Emma made sure that we were well looked after. She had arranged for the housekeeper to prepare a meal for us on our first night which was superb albeit far too much to eat!. She also organised a friend Mohammed to briefly show us round and point out various places to eat etc which we tried and which were all superb. This was my second visit and my friends first – we will definitely be back and I cannot recommend Dar Emma more highly

Essaouira has been a favorite town for me – and having spent some 9 months there and made half a dozen visits over 25 years, I was even more delighted to stay at Dar Beida this time. Emma, the owner, was extremely responsive, knowledgeable and helpful from the start. The house is a dream – fabulous furniture and interior decor, well-laid out, comfortable, and best of all, retains much of traditional Moroccan architecture. Friends describe their visits and stay in the house as “magical, and relaxing. The CD, book, and magazine collections alone will keep you enthralled – and the terraces pure gems. But a few steps away are the lively markets, the real life of local people, while the town’s central attractions are within five minutes away. We lvoed it – it’s unforgettable.
