Lamu Island’s exotic and mysterious charm is a unique part of African history and this villa’s magical and privileged spot along it’s most famous shoreline is a rare treat. We love the modern take on authentic Swahili craftsmanship and architecture and the stunning views of the Indian Ocean.
Situated directly above the white sands of Shela Beach on Lamu island, this handcrafted villa above the Indian Ocean is located in one of the best kept secrets in Africa. Backed by the 17th century village in the spot where the island’s watchpost once stood, this stretch of coast extends for miles along the northeastern coast of Kenya. Built in authentic Swahili style with the artistic and ancestral talent of the best local craftsmen, the villa features classic Arabic arches, handcarved teak accents, whitewashed zidaka plasterwork and ornate architectural features. The first floor includes a gourmet kitchen manned by your private chef, a bright and relaxing main lounge and library and an indoor/outdoor dining terrace with stunning views. Three of the five en suite bedrooms are here each with private terraces and ocean views. The large master bedroom resides on the upper floor with panoramic views facing Manda island and Shela anchorage. Each room is decorated with traditional decor, hand woven rugs and antiques that compliment the Swahili character of the villa.
The main front terrace towers above the beach, and there are plenty of peaceful and shady lounging areas and arcades in the gardens and poolside. The roof terrace sits at the pinnacle and is where you’ll be treated to breathatking views of the African coast and skies.
Fully staffed including a private chef. Wifi throughout, DVD projector with DVDs library, stereo and iPod docking audio system, books and games. Optional spa and massage services available.
The UNESCO Lamu archipelago is a small group of islands located on the northeastern coast of Kenya, one hundred and fifty miles north of Mombasa and a few hundred miles southeast of Nairobi and consists of neighboring islands Manda, Pate and Kiwayu. The village exists as it has for hundreds of years and is a charming 17th century town with no cars or motorized vehicles, just a labyrinth of cobblestoned streets and alleyways with the charming donkeys for transport. The traditional and romantic dhow boats can navigate the between islands and take you to some of the best coral reef diving in Manda Toto or Kinika and sailing along the coast to the largest mangrove forests in Kenya. Dodori National Reserve is an hour north and the Tana river delta is to the south with some of the most famous game preserves in the world including Amboselli, Masai Mara and Tsavo within a couple hours’ plane ride.
